Lamott is based in Marin County, California.

Personal life

Lamott was 65 years old on April 13, 2019, when she married for the first time. Neal Allen, 63, a former vice president for marketing at McKesson Corporation in San Francisco, married her. The pair met in August 2016 through OurTime, a matchmaking portal for people over the age of 50. He was a twice-divorced father of four who had left his career at McKesson to devote himself to writing.

Lamott was born in San Francisco and a graduate of Drew School. She was a Goucher College student for two years, where she wrote for the newspaper. Kenneth Lamott, her father, was also a writer. After his brain cancer diagnosis, she wrote her first published book, Hard Laughter. Sam, who was born in August 1989, and Jax, a grandson, were born in July 2009.

In Freida Lee Mock's 1999 film Bird by Bird: A Life of Writer Anne Lamott, Lamott's life was chronicled. She is often described as the "People's Author" because of the documentary and her following on Facebook and other online forums.
