Jon Krakauer (born April 12, 1954) is an American writer and climber.
He is the author of best-selling non-fiction books; Into the Wild; Under the Banner of Heaven; and Where Men Win Glory: Pat Tillman's Odyssey as well as numerous magazine papers.
In 1996, he was part of an ill-fated expedition to summit Mount Everest, one of the deadliest accidents in Everest's history.
Early life
Krakauer was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, as the third of Carol Ann (née Jones) and Lewis Joseph Krakauer's three children. His father was Jewish, and his mother was a Unitarian of Scandinavian descent. He was born in Corvallis, Oregon. At the age of eight, his father introduced the young Krakauer to mountaineering. His father, who was "relentlessly competitive and optimistic in the extreme," had high hopes for his son to enroll Harvard Medical School and become a doctor, according to Krakauer. "Life's one sure route to meaningful achievement and long-term happiness," Krakauer wrote. He played tennis at Corvallis High School and graduated in 1972. He went on to study at Hampshire College in Massachusetts, where he earned his Environmental Studies degree in 1976. Linda Mariam Moore, a former climber, and the couple married in 1980. They lived in Seattle, Washington, but after the publication of Krakauer's book Into Thin Air, they moved to Boulder, Colorado.
