Teemu Pukki Career

Club career

Pukki began his football career in childhood in HOPS (Hovinsaaren Palloseura), while living in Hovinsaari, Kotka. He joined KTP as a youth, playing for their under-19 team. He made his first appearance with the first team at 16 years old, and his appearances earned him a call to play for Finland's youth international teams. Pukki made 29 appearances in the Finnish Premier League (Veikkausliiga) in two seasons of first-team football (Veikkausliiga) and scored three goals.

Pukki came from KTP and was called up to Sevilla's first squad for the away match against Real Madrid on December 7, 2008, but it was an unemployed replacement. On January 25, 2009, he made his La Liga debut against Racing at home. He was unemployed in Sevilla, most for the reserve team Sevilla Atlético, so he returned to Finland.

Pukki signed a three-and-a-year deal with the Finnish Veikkausliliga club HJK on August 28, 2010. Pukki played his first match against IFK Mariehamn on August 30th. In the next match against FF Jaro, he scored his first goal for HJK in a league match for nearly two years. In the 2010 season, he played in seven games and scored two goals for HJK. In the Finnish Cup, HJK and Pukki won the Finnish Veikkausliiga and silver medals at the end of the season.

In 18 league games out of which he was in the starting line up in 13, he scored 11 goals and notched eight assists in 2011, out of which he was not in the starting line up in 13. He was chosen to the 2011 Veikkausliiga All Stars team. Pukki was also a key figure in HJK's UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League qualifications. In a 2–0 home victory over FC Schalke 04, he scored two goals against Bangor City and HJK's both goals. In the 6–1 away loss to Schalke, Pukki scored HJK's only goal.

Pukki joined Schalke on a three-year deal on August 31, 2011. In a 0–2 loss to Bayern Munich on 66th minute, he made his debut on September 18th as a replacement for Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. He scored two goals for Schalke as he debuted in the starting 11 against Hannover 96 on Friday. He became the third Finn to score a brace in the German Bundesliga after Ari Hjelm and Pasi Rautiainen.

Pukki has signed a four-year contract with Celtic Schalke 04 for an undisclosed fee on August 31, 2013. He scored on his debut against Hearts on September 14, 2013 and then again against St Johnstone on September 21. He scored against Hibernian on January 26, 2014. Pukki's first season with Celtic was regarded as a disappointment, as he struggled with form and failed to fill the void left by Gary Hooper, who had left at the start of the season. Pukki himself admitted to the lack of effect he had made earlier, admitting that playing in Scotland would be "easier" than in Germany. He found the speed and physical characteristics of the game in Scotland difficult to adjust to, and said, "Scottish football is not straightforward." It is not a bad league at all."

Pukki scored his first Celtic hat trick in a pre-season friendly against LASK Linz, a 52-0 win for Celtic. Pukki scored twice in Celtic's UEFA Champions League qualifier match against KR Reykjavik at Murrayfield Stadium, winning 5–0 on aggregate. However, he failed to make a difference in the upcoming qualifying round matches against Legia Warsaw, and he was suspended at halftime in the league loss to Inverness Caledonian Thistle on August 6th, 2014.

Pukki signed a one-year loan contract on September 1, 2014, with the option to buy with the Danish side Brändby IF. He made his debut 13 days later in a league match against Randers and scored his first goal against Esbjerg two weeks later in a 2–2 draw away from Esbjerg. He scored another four goals in his next four games and was rewarded for his efforts by being named the Superliga Player of the Month for October, with nine goals throughout the season. Pukki's three-year deal with Brndby ended on June 19, 2015 for an undisclosed fee. Pukki scored three goals when Brndby defeated Hertha BSC in the third round of the 2016–17 UEFA Europa League qualifiers, winning 3–1, thus overcoming a 0–1 deficit from the first leg in Berlin.

Brndby would win the first leg of the second qualifying round of the 2017-18 UEFA Europa League on July 13, 2017, after scoring one goal against VPS in the first leg. Brndby defeated Silkeborg IF 3–1 in the 2017–18 Danish Cup final on May 10th, 2018.

He was fired at the end of the 2017-18 season after struggling to reach a new agreement with the club.

Pukki joined Norwich City, an EFL Championship club, on a free transfer, three-year contract. He made his debut on August 4th and appeared in the full 90 minutes of a 2–2 draw at Birmingham City, and a week later, he scored his first goal in a 4–3 home loss to West Bromwich Albion.

Pukki scored eight goals in six consecutive matches, culminating with two goals in a 4–0 victory over Bolton Wanderers from January to February 2019. In a 3–0 win over Ipswich Town in the East Anglian Derby on February 10, he became the Finn with the most goals in a Championship season, overtaking Shefki Kuqi's 20 in 2004–05.

Pukki was named EFL Championship Player of the Season in April 2019 and was drafted into the 2018-19 Championship Team of the Season. He was also known as Norwich City F.C., as a member of Norwich City F.C. The Barry Butler Memorial Trophy was given to a player of the Season by Norwich City's supporters for 2018–19.

Pukki signed a new three-year deal with the Premier League newcomers on July 3. In a 4–1 away loss to Liverpool on the first day of the new season on August 9, he scored his first Premier League goal. In a 3–1 win over Newcastle United, he scored a hat-trick against Efan Ekoku in September 1993, Norwich's first hat-trick in the Premier League since Efan Ekoku against Everton. He was named Premier League Player of the Month and PFA Premier League Player of the Month for August. Pukki scored eleven Premier League goals for Norwich, but was unable to prevent the Canaries from being relegated to the Championship.

Pukki stayed at Norwich after being relegated to the Championship and scoring his first goal of the season in a 2–2 draw with Preston North End at Carrow Road. Pukki's prolific form in the Championships was sustained in his fiftieth goal for the Canaries with a brace in a 2–1 win over Blackburn Rovers. Pukki was named Player of the Month in February 2021 after scoring seven goals in seven games. In a 7–0 thrashing of Huddersfield Town on 6 April 20, he scored his first ever Championship hat-trick and his 20-fifth goal of the season.

In April 2021, he was named on the EFL Team of the Season and named as the Season's Best EFL Player of the Season. Emiliano Buenda, his colleague, had the award but not the one he received.

2021-22 season

Pukki scored his first goal of the season against Leicester from the penalty spot in a 2-1 loss. Pukki would also score his first goal of the season against Watford in open play. In back to back victories for Norwich over Brentford and Southampton, the latter of which was the club's first game under new manager Dean Smith's watchdogship. Pukki will score 11 goals and finish the season as Norwich's top goalscorer for the fourth straight season over the course of the season. He will also be named Norwich City's Player of the Season, but Norwich City was relegated to the championship once more.

Pukki remained at Norwich for the 2022/23 season despite being linked to moves away. In a 3-0 victory over Coventry, he scored his first goal of the season.

International career

Pukki made his international debut on August 10, 2005, scoring both goals of the match for Finland U15 in Cardiff against Wales U15 in a 0–2 away victory.

Pukki made his debut in the Finland national team on February 4, 2009, when Stuart Baxter used him as a replacement against Japan in a friendly match played in Tokyo. On March 22, 2013, he scored the equalizer as Finland secured a 1-1 draw against Spain, the reigning world and European champions.

Finland gained promotion from League C. Pukki's only goal in each of the Finns' first three games, both at home against Hungary and away to Estonia in the 2018-19 UEFA Nations League.

Pukki scored ten goals in the UEFA Euro 2020 qualifiers, helping Finland qualify for the country's first major tournament, UEFA Euro 2020, in their history.

Pukki was drafted up for the UEFA Euro 2020 pre-tournament friendly match against Sweden on May 29th, 2021. Pukki appeared in all three international games at the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament. Despite losing a 2–0 loss to Belgium on June 2120, he did not score in any of these matches, and Finland was ranked 3rd in Group B. They were then knocked out of the tournament.

Pukki scored twice against Kazakhstan in 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier to overrule Jari Litmanen as Finland's all-time top goalscorer.
