Roman Alekseyevich Eremenko (born 19 March 1987) is a Finnish professional footballer who plays for FC Rostov in the Russian Premier League.

Eremenko is best known for his time in FC Dynamo Kyiv, winning the Ukrainian Premier League title in 2009 and playing in the Champions and Europa Leagues.

From October 2016 to October 2018, he was banned for crack cocaine use.

He also played for the Finland national football team before his suspension.

Eremenko made his international debut for Finland in June 2007, at the age of 20.

Personal life

Roman Eremenko is married to Marika Eremenko and has three children. Eremenko and his family arrived in Finland at the age of three when his father, former FC Dynamo Moscow and FC Spartak Moscow player Alexei Eremenko Sr., joined FF Jaro in Finland. He was granted Finnish citizenship in 2003 but he also holds a Russian passport. Eremenko is Alexei Eremenko Jr. and Sergei Eremenko Jr's younger brother. In August 2009, his father was named as the head of Jaro.

Since failing a drug test, he was banned for two years because of doping. Based on a sample obtained by the UEFA, he was found positive for cocaine.

Club career

Eremenko's career on a senior level began when he made his Veikkausliiga debut for Jaro in 2004 when coach Hannu Touru used him as a substitute in a match against MYPA on June 29th, 2004. Eremenko was on the pitch at the same time with his father Alexei Eremenko Sr., who was playing for the whole game as a midfielder. In a match against FC Lahti on September 18, Eremenko scored his first goal on senior level on September 18, 2004. In his first season, he made six appearances for Jaro. He was also loaned to BK Obstads BK and Kokkola, Finland's First Division club. When he made his way into Jaro in 2005, he became a regular in the starting eleven. He had 13 caps and was in the starting lineup ten times. He scored two goals in those 13 games.

Eremenko signed a five-year contract with Udinese in the summer of 2005. Against Messina on the first day of the 2006–07 season, he made his Serie A debut. After Mika Aaltonen, Mika Lehkosuo, and his brother Alexei Eremenko Jr. made an appearance in a Serie A match, he became the fourth Finnish footballer. On January 31, 2007, he was loaned to A.C. Siena, where he played 11 games. He returned to Udinese during the summer of 2007.

Eremenko, Andrea Dossena, Cristián Zapata, and Simone Pepe were all granted new positions until June 2012.

He was loaned to FC Dynamo Kyiv from August 2008 until May 31. On May 22, 2009, he signed with Dynamo Kyiv until 2014. Eremenko emerged as one of the team's leaders during his three years as a director.

Eremenko made his Champions League debut in a home game against Arsenal FC on September 17, 2008. On the 8th minute of a game against Chornomorets Odessa, he scored his first goal in the Ukrainian Premier League this week, netting a pass from Tiberiu Ghioane. On December 10, 2008, Eremenko scored his first goal in the Champions League, beating Fenerbahçe.

He played in a total of 35 official matches for Dynamo, 26 of which were in the Ukrainian championship, and scored 1 goal during the 2009–2010 season.

Eremenko, who has been active with Dynamo domestically, has been the top assistant of the Europa League in the 2010-11 season.

Eremenko played in a total of 127 official games and scored seven goals in a span of three years with Dynamo. He has also competed in the 2008–09 Ukrainian Premier League and the Ukrainian Super Cup in 2009 and 2011.

Eremenko's highest transfer fee ever paid for a Finnish player in the last stages of the summer transfer window in 2011. Alexei, his older brother, has also signed a Rubin Kazan contract in August 2011. In a 2–0 home victory over Dynamo Moscow on November 26, Roman scored his first goal for Rubin.

He scored the game's only goal in the Russian Cup final on May 9, 2012, on May 9, 2012.

Eremenko joined PFC CSKA Moscow on August 25, 2014, after leaving Rubin Kazan in the summer of 2014. He was named as the Best Player of October and December 2014, as well as March 2015 in the Russian Football Premier League. He was named the Russian Football Premier League MVP of the season 2014–15 award.

Eremenko had been banned from football by UEFA since October 6, 2016. Roman had been barred from UEFA matches after testing positive for cocaine on November 18, 2016. Eremenko's suspension was extended to all football competitions in December 2016. His appeal was rejected by UEFA, but the ban was upheld on March 6, 2017.

Eremenko signed with FC Spartak Moscow on August 10, 2018, joining his younger brother Sergei at the team. Alexei Eremenko Sr., his father, also played for Spartak. His disqualification came to an end on October 6, 2018 and he made his debut against Yenisey Krasnoyarsk on October 7th. Spartak released him from his service on January 8, 2019.

FC Rostov announced the signing of Eremenko on a 2.5-year deal on January 18, 2019. Rostov (called FC Rostselmash at the time) was the first club of Roman's father, Alexei Eremenko Sr. He scored twice in the last ten minutes in his third game for Rostov on March 16, 2019 to give his club a 2–0 away victory over Rubin Kazan.

Eremenko had been a player for four years, Rostov announced on June 14th that he had extended his deal with the club for four years. Eremenko left Rostov by mutual consent on February 23, 2021.

Eremenko joined Veikkausliiga club HIFK for the remainder of the 2022 season on July 28, 2022.

International career

On June 6, 2007, Eremenko made his international debut with the Finland national team at Helsinki Olympic Stadium in a UEFA Euro 2008 qualifier against Belgium, when Roy Hodgson selected him to the starting lineup. After a hurl of a Eurasian eagle-owl invaded the playing pitch, the game was called off for six minutes. The Eagle Owls, the Finnish team's new name, were born from this incident. Eremenko has been a regular member of Finland since, and he was a key figure in Finland's qualification campaigns for 2010 FIFA World Cup, UEFA Euro 2012, 2014 FIFA World Cup, and UEFA Euro 2016 qualification campaigns. In a friendly match against Malta on March 3, 2010, he scored his first goal for Finland from penalty spot.
