Martyn Waghorn Career

Club career

Waghorn was born in South Shields, Tyne, and Wear. Waghorn began playing for his hometown team Sunderland and he progressed through the Academy of Light's youth system to the under-18 team. In a 6–1 victory over Norwich City in the FA Youth Cup third round, Waghorn scored his first hat-trick of his career on December 12, 2007. In a 4–2 victory over Newcastle United a few days later at the Academy of Light, he scored twice, both of whom were penalties.

On December 26, 2007, Waghorn made his first team debut against Manchester United at the Stadium of Light; the match ended 4–0 to Manchester United. The player, who was usually a striker, had to play in left midfield, and match boss Roy Keane paid him a lot of praise for his young player, predicting a "long and fruitful career" for him. In February 2008, Waghorn agreed to a new two-and-a-half year with Sunderland, which Keane described as favorable for both Sunderland and the player. He made his only appearance for the club in the 2008–09 season against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on November 1, 2008, a 5–0 loss.

On November 17, 2008, Waghorn joined Charlton Athletic on a month's loan. In a 2–2 draw at home against Derby County on December 15, Waghorn scored his first goal. The loan agreement was extended for a second month. In a season that would result in relegation to League One, he made seven appearances for the team.

After turning down a loan from Leicester City on August 6, 2009, Waghorn joined Leicester City on loan until January 11, 2010. Waghorn made his Leicester City debut as a replacement against Swansea City, scoring the equalizing goal as Leicester City defeated 2–1. Waghorn was happy with his debuts for Leicester City as a replacement, but Waghorn expressed his admiration as an impact player. He made his first league appearance for Leicester City against Reading, scoring the winning goal. In a 4–0 victory, Waghorn scored his first professional brace against Queens Park Rangers. On April 28, 2010, he was given the club's Young Player of the Year award for his overall success. In a 4–3 loss on penalties to Cardiff City in the Championship play-offs semi-final second leg on May 10, 2010, Waghorn missed the last penalty kick in a 4–3 loss on penalties. During his loan season, he scored 12 goals in 28 starts for the club.

Waghorn returned to Leicester City on a permanent basis in August 2010 for a fee that soared to £3 million to finance Sunderland's record signing Asamoah Gyan. He was dissatisfied with the lack of opportunities at his old club, and he happily dropped out of a division because the attraction of playing regular football was too appealing for him to turn down. On September 11, 2010, Waghorn made his debut in a 1–1 draw against Coventry City, scoring his first goal in a 4–3 loss to Norwich City on September 28th. When Sven-Göran Eriksson took over as boss on October 3, 2010, he failed to win a regular place. Nonetheless, injury delays prevented Waghorn from joining Derby County on loan during the January 2011 transfer window. Waghorn was out for the remainder of the 2010–11 season after suffering a hamstring injury during training on April 6th.

On August 31, 2011 Hull City completed the loan signing of Waghorn, which would have occurred until January 2012. In a 1–0 victory at Peterborough United on September 10, he made his debut on September 10, 2011. Matty Fryatt was up for delivering a low cross along the six-yard box against Doncaster Rovers on September 27, 2011 at Keepmoat Stadium, and although Neil Sullivan might have been dissatisfied not to cut it out, Waghorn was there to apply the finish from close range. After suffering a hamstring injury during his loan period, he returned to Leicester on December 6, 2011.

Waghorn joined Millwall on a three-month loan agreement on September 12, 2013 after making just two substitute appearances for Leicester. On his first appearance against Derby County on September 14, 2013, he scored on his debut against Derby County. In a 5–2 loss to AFC Bournemouth on October 5, 2013, he scored his second goal for the club.

Waghorn joined Wigan Athletic on loan until the end of the season on January 31, 2014. In a Championship match against Huddersfield Town in a 1–0 loss, he made his debut on February 8, 2014 in a 1–0 loss. Wigan Athletic's first goal came against Barnsley ten days later. Waghorn joined Wigan Athletic on a free transfer on April 4, 2014 after scoring three goals in nine appearances.

Waghorn and Wigan teammate James Tavernier agreed to a three-year contract with Scottish Championship side Rangers on July 20th. He kept 33 as his squad number, as with previous clubs, due to superstition. In a 6–2 victory over Rangers on his debut in the Scottish Challenge Cup against Hibernian on July 25, Waghorn scored a double on his debut for Rangers. In a 5–1 loss to Queen of the South on August 30, 2015, he scored twice from the penalty spot twice. In a 5–0 victory over Raith Rovers at Ibrox on September 5, he scored twice from the penalty box once more. In a 2–1 victory over Dumbarton on September 21, 2015, his striking dominance continued when he scored two goals.

In a 4–0 victory over Greenock Morton on September 27, he earned his first senior hat-trick and raised his league goal tally to 11 and his total total score to 14 in the league. Due to his on the field results, he received the Scottish Championship Player of the Month Award for September. In a 4–0 win over Alloa Athletic on November 7, 2015, he scored two goals, bringing his total number to 17 goals. In a 5–1 victory over Cowdenbeath in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup, he scored another treble. Rangers' 2–1 victory over Kilmarnock after being tackled by former Rangers defender Steven Smith and ruled out for 6–8 weeks on February 16th. He did not return until the final league match of the season against St Mirren on May 1st. Waghorn also participated in the 2016 Scottish Cup Final, but Rangers were unable to save Rangers from losing the match 3–2.

Waghorn was offered a contract extension by Rangers in the summer of 2016, but it was turned down. He was recently identified with a possible transfer to Bristol City as a result of his move. However, it did not influence his goalscoring form in his first four games against Motherwell, Annan Athletic, and a brace against Stranraer before scoring Rangers first Scottish Premiership goal of the season in a 1–1 draw at home to Hamilton Academical. Waghorn sustained a hamstring strain in the same match against Hamilton Academical, which kept him out of football until mid-September 2016. Waghorn didn't recover from injury, but he did score the third hat-trick of his Rangers career in a League Cup match against Queen of the South. However, he did not score in the league from the start of the season until December, when he netted a brace away from Hamilton Academical to Hamilton Academical.

Waghorn joined Ipswich Town on a two-year deal on August 7th. In a 2–1 victory over Barnsley, he scored the winning goal on his first day in the league. In a 4–3 away victory over Millwall on Monday, he scored on his debut, he braced for a brace. In a 2–0 home win over Brentford at Portman Road on August 19, he scored in his third straight league appearance. During his first season with the Ipswich first team, Waghorn was a regular starter. In a 2–1 away win over Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on March 6, he scored a brace, as well as a late free kick from outside the 18 yard box. On April 2nd, he scored his second brace against Millwall in a match that ended in a 2–2 draw. He spent the season as the club's top scorer with 16 league goals.

Following the conclusion of the 2017/18 season, Waghorn was rumored to join Middlesbrough from Ipswich. On August 8, 2018, Derby County swooped in at the last second, and he was announced as a Rams fan on August 8th. Waghorn made his seventh signing for Frank Lampard upon his signing, earning him the number 9. In a 1–4 loss against Leeds United on August 11, he made his debut on August 11th in a 1–4 loss.

On the final day of the 2020/21 Season Derby, Derby defeated Sheffield Wednesday in a game where the Rams would have been promoted to League One at the expense of Wednesday. Waghorn stepped up to take a penalty and convert the spot kick, which would ultimately be the game's last goal, in what was his last game as a Derby player.

Following the expiration of his Derby deal, Waghorn joined Coventry City on a two-year deal on July 2nd.

Waghorn failed to hold a stable spot in the Sky Blues' starting eleven in the 2021-22 season, and only managed to find the back of the net once more during the season, which was the final goal in the Coventry Building Society Arena's 2-0 victory over Middlesbrough.

Waghorn's second Sky Blues goal came after 404 days with a vital penalty kick late in a 1-0 victory over Sheffield United.

International career

Waghorn has played for England twice under 19 years, in the United Kingdom, Bosnia, and Herzegovina.

In September 2011, Waghorn was included in the England under-21 squad, against both Azerbaijan and Israel. He made his debut in the game against Azerbaijan, a 6–0 victory, and scored a goal in the 79th minute after being brought on as a replacement 12 minutes earlier. Waghorn was in the starting lineup for the under-21 team, scoring a header against Israel from an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain cross.
