Club career
Jäskeläinen was born in Mikkeli and made his Veikkausli debut for MP Mikkeli in 1992, making him the club's first choice goalkeeper in 1994. He moved to VPS Valiant Valiant, where he spent two seasons.
Jäskeläinen was purchased by manager Colin Todd for £100,000 for Bolton Wanderers of the Football League First Division in 1997. He quickly established himself as Bolton's first choice keeper, but a cruciate ligament injury kept him out for half of Bolton's 2000–01 promotion season.
He saved two penalties in one match against Blackburn Rovers' Benni McCarthy and Jason Roberts to win by 1–0 away in October 2006. After assisting Bolton in securing a UEFA Cup spot for the second time in history, Jäskeläinen received Bolton's "Player of the Year Award" and also the "Players' Player of the Year Award" on May 13. Despite widespread rumors linking him with a departure from Bolton after his deal came to an end in the 2007-08 season, Jääskeläinen agreed to a new four-year deal on June 11th, which he signed on July 9th.
He made his 400th appearance against Manchester City on November 2, 2008, his 400th appearance against Hull City came six days later. He saved another penalty from Benni McCarthy in a match against Blackburn Rovers, who are now under new owner Sam Allardyce, in January 2009, resulting in a 2–2 draw. Jäskeläinen was given a testimonial match against Hibernian in August 2009, during which he kept a clean sheet.
He made his 500th appearance against Birmingham City in an FA Cup quarter-final on March 12, 2011 and his 500th appearance at Manchester United came a week later.
In a poll determining the best save in the Premier League's 20th century, a double-save from Jäskeläinen against Manchester United came third in 2012.
Bolton was relegated from the Premier League during the 2011–12 season, but Jäskeläinen's two-year deal brought an end to his club's 15-year involvement. He appeared in 530 games in all sports, placing him joint third in Bolton's all-time appearance list.
West Ham revealed on June 13, 2012, that Jäskeläinen had agreed personal terms on a one-year contract with a second year option. Jäskeläinen was reunited with former manager Sam Allardyce, who underwent eight years with Bolton Wanderers. In a 1–0 victory over Aston Villa on August 18, he made his West Ham debut on his debut. On April 12, 2013, the option for a contract extension was enabled, extending Jääskeläinen with "the Hammers" until summer 2014. He appeared in all 38 games of West Ham's 2012–13 season, including runner-up in the Hammer of the Year. In the upcoming Premier League season, he appeared in 18 games before being suspended in January for Adrián.
"I feel good and I felt good last season, so I hope I can keep going from there," says West Ham's four-year contract extension, "I feel well and I'm happy." Jäskeläinen appeared in just one game for West Ham in the 2014–15 season, after Adrián was dismissed after a goalless draw at Southampton on August 11, 2015. At the end of the campaign, he was released.
Jäskeläinen was tried with Bradford City after being released from West Ham. He signed a one-year deal with Wigan Athletic on August 11, 2015, just relegated to League One. In a goalless draw with Walsall at the DW Stadium, he was back-up to fellow incomer Richard O'Donnell on his debut on October 3rd at the age of 40, leaving a clean sheet on a clean sheet.
Wigan beat Wigan and second place in the table on March 31, 2016, after his 15 clean sheets in 32 games helped the team win an 18-match unbeaten run and second place in the standings. Wigan's season as champions came at an end. Jaaskelainen was one of four players to be released by Wigan following the conclusion of his deal with the 2016–17 season, with Wigan being relegated back to League One after finishing 23rd.
Jäskeläinen, 42, moved between clubs and countries after joining Indian Super League club ATK on September 1, 2017. In a goalless draw with Jamshedpur FC, he made his debut three months later. After playing as a second option to Debjit Majumder on January 17, he was released on January 17th. Later reports stated that he will remain coach at the club, but that his playing career has come to an end.
International career
Jääskeläinen made his Finnish debut against Malta on March 25, 1998. He was Finland's second favorite after Antti Niemi for years, but Jääskeläinen emerged as Finland's second choice after Niemi retired from international football in 2005.
Jäskeläinen announced his retirement from international football on October 29, 2009, having gained 55 caps for his country. In explaining his decision, Jäskeläinen said he wished that it would continue to benefit his club career. However, Jäskeläinen declared his return to national team in a match against Hungary on October 6, 2010, although Otto Fredrikson was unable to participate due to an injury, but claimed that this was just a one-off.
Coaching career
Sam Ricketts, a former Bolton teammate, was appointed as the goalkeeper coach at Wrexham in 2018. Jäskeläinen, alongside Graham Barrow and Carl Darlington, was in charge of Wrexham's second round FA Cup match against Newport County on December 1st due to rumors surrounding Ricketts' work. The game ended 0–0, meaning a replay would be played. Ricketts' resignation was announced two days later, and Barrow was named sole caretaker boss until a replacement was found. On June 7, 2019, he left the club.
