Tamyra Monica Gray (born July 26, 1979) is an American actor, singer, and songwriter who finished fourth in the first season of the musical reality competition American Idol in 2002.

Post American Idol, Gray, has began acting on Broadway and television.

In early 2003, she appeared on the third season of the drama series Boston Public.

Personal life

Gray was born in Takoma Park, Maryland, and later moved to Norcross, Georgia. In 1997, she graduated from Stone Mountain High School in Stone Mountain, Georgia. She began singing at a young age. Miss Atlanta in 1998 competed in numerous beauty pageants and was named Miss Atlanta. Gray studied at Georgia State University, majoring in business law and entertainment management. She worked in various capacities prior to arriving in American Idol, such as daycare worker, party organizer, waitress, and even running her own cleaning company. Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes and rapper DMX, among others, shot Coca-Cola commercials and collaborated with artists like her friend Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes and rapper DMX in the hopes of gaining an entry into the entertainment industry.

Sam Watters, a color me wrongd singer who appeared on The Dreamer, died on September 2, 2006 in Capri, Italy. Around 45 people attended, including Lisa Braude, her then-manager. The wedding pictures were sold to American newspapers, and a low-key friendship was soon revealed after People broke the news. She is now stepmom to Kieran, Sam's son from a previous marriage. Gray revealed to Entertainment Weekly on March 23, 2010 that she was expecting her first baby with Watters. Sienna Marie was born on July 17, 2010.

Music career

Gray provided background vocals on DMX's "Slippin'" album in 1998. On May 25, 2004, Idol, producer Simon Fuller, converted Tamyra to his newly formed independent record label 19 Records, a continuation of his 19 Management, Gray's first solo album, which Gray wrote herself, was finally released on May 25, 2004. During the first week of its debut, the album was sold 39,000 copies and has sold 122,000 to date. "Raindrops Will Fall," Tamyra's lead single, debuted on Billboard's Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, with another set of remixes of the same song debuting at number five on the charts. Gray left 19 Entertainment later in life, but she's still close to Fuller, who sang of Sam Watters in Capri, Italy.

On Clarkson's debut release Thankful, Gray performed a duet with American Idol season one champion Kelly Clarkson. Gray co-written the song "You Thought Wrong," but it was never released as a single.

Gray was a writer and back-up singer on Jessica Simpson's album A Public Affair, which was released on August 29, 2006. She is ranked fourth in writing credits on the albums "If You Were Mine" and "The Lover in Me" and "The Lover in Me" and a song on "If You Were Mine." The CD debuted on Billboard's 200 Chart at number five.

Gray co-wrote "I Believe," the number one Billboard Hot 100 song.

Gray was rumored to be recording a new one. Gray's call it more a club-friendly, hip-hop-based venture than her debut. She is also looking for a record label. Tamyra posted that she was in the studio recording a new album with Ryan Tedder and the Runaway Production Company, which her partner Sam Watters is a member of. In 2010, they had planned to release her album through a major label.

Acting career

On Boston Public, she landed the recurring role of Aisha Clemens, a student in an intimate relationship, which appeared in seven episodes. She showcased her singing abilities, including Luther Vandross' "Dance With My Father" and Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You." She has appeared on episodes of Half and Half Las Vegas, Tru Calling, What I Like About You (TV series), Ghost Whisperer, and All Of Us. She appeared on The Tyra Banks Show in 2006 as an American Idol student.

She has appeared on Broadway twice. In November 2004, Gray was cast in Priya in Broadway's ephemerizing Bombay Dreams for a limited engagement of 12 weeks. The show came to an end early on January 1, 2005, owing to continuing poor sales. Mimi Marquez, a young actress, appeared on Rent as Mimi Marquez on May 29, 2007 and was supposed to continue her duties until November 25, 2007, but the six-month contract was postponed. Gray was on Rent until June 15, 2008, and Renée Elise Goldsberry took over.

Gray made her big screen supporting role debut in the independent film The Gospel in October 2005, which debuted at No. 58. 5 at the box office, with good DVD sales when it was introduced to stores on January 3, 2006. Gray's album "Now Behold the Lamb" debuts on the film's soundtrack, and it soared to No. 1 in the United States. Billboard's Soundtrack Chart No. 1 on Billboard's Soundtrack Chart. Gray appeared in "Twist," a theatrical interpretation of Oliver Twist produced in New Orleans during the Great Depression, starring Debbie Allen at the Pasadena Playhouse in Pasadena, California. The musical had been planned to run from June 14 to July 17, but was postponed until July 24 due to strong ticket sales and a string of sold-out shows. Kate took over the role of Kate on the national tour of If/Then in January 2016. Papa Ge in the 2018 revival of Once on This Island took over on Jan. 8, 2018.
