Simone Zaza Career

Club career

Zaza, a native of Policoro, grew up in Metaponto and began his youth with Stella Azzurra from Bernalda in 1997. He stayed with the company until 2002, when he transferred to Valdera's youth academy at the age of 11. He remained until 2006 when he was scouted by Atalanta's Serie A side, which he joined shortly after. He played for four years, and even began to earn senior calls as a result of the 2008–2009 Serie A campaign. In a 0–2 home loss to Chievo Verona as an 86th-minute replacement for Ferreira Pinto, he made his Serie A debut on March 1, 2009. He made two more substitute appearances for Atalanta this season, but remained within the club's youth program for the entire 2009–10 Serie A campaign.

Zaza was transferred from Atalanta to Sampdoria, a sister company in Serie A. He was enlisted in the Genoa (under-20) youth team for the 2010–11 season, but he also earned two substitute appearances against Genoa and Fiorentina during the 2010–11 Serie A season. At the end of the season, he was promoted to the first team.

Zaza was officially sent out on loan to Juve Stabia in Serie B on July 14, 2011 on what was supposed to be a season-long contract. Sampdoria recalled the player during the 2012 January transfer window after only four appearances and no goals for the club. The club loaned the player to Viareggio, Lega Pro Prima Divisione, on a six-month contract to provide the youngster with regular first team experience. His time with the third-division club was fruitful; he scored 11 goals in 18 league appearances, 17 as a starter.

Zaza joined Ascoli on a new season-long loan contract ahead of the 2012–13 Serie B Championships in Sampdoria. He officially joined the team on July 16th and made his club debut against Bari on September 1st. Zaza continued to score 18 league goals in 35 Serie B appearances (30 as a starter) en route to becoming the sixth top goalscorer for the season. Ascoli's relegation came as a result of the season's 20th in the league table, but his hopes were ineffective. On the 30th of June 2013, he returned to Sampdoria.

Juventus purchased him outright from Sampdoria on July 9, 2013. He migrated from Juventus to Sassuolo in a co-ownership agreement for €2.5 million. He played in Serie A in the first round of the league, with Sassuolo losing 2–0 to Torino. He scored his first goal in Serie A on September 1st, as the team lost 4–1 to Livorno. Sassuolo scored their first point in the Italian top flight thanks to his effort, scoring in the fifth day's victory over Napoli, 1–1.

Sassuolo bought Zaza outright from Juventus on June 20, 2014, the second in the country's second highest price. Juventus, on the other hand, reserved the right to re-purchase Zaza for a reported €15 million by June 30, 2015, and €18 million by June 2016.

Juventus reported on July 7, 2015 that they had used their option to sign Zaza from Sassuolo for €18 million. Domenico Berardi's return to Sassuolo for a €10 million fee was included in the agreement, according to the publication. On his debut, Zaza scored in the 50th minute against Frosinone, a 1–1 draw. He scored the last goal against Sevilla in the UEFA Champions League group stage on September 30, 2015, winning 2–0; this was his first Champions League victory. In the Coppa Italia's fourth victory over Torino, the cross-city rivals, on December 16, he scored the first two goals of a 4–0 victory.

West Ham United announced on August 28th that they had loaned Zaza for a €5 million loan repayment, with a €20 million permanent commitment to buy following a string of Premier League appearances and plus €3 million in bonuses. In a 4–2 home loss to Watford in the Premier League on September 10, he made his club debut with the club on September ten. Zaza made 11 appearances for West Ham, eight in the Premier League and three in the EFL Cup, all without scoring. In the EFL Cup, his last game came on November 30th in a 1–4 away loss to Manchester United. He suffered with a knee injury in December and was not selected again before leaving the club in January 2017.

After a certain number of first team appearances by the end of 2017, a €2 million contract was signed by La Liga club Valencia CF on loan for a €2 million fee, with a €16 million permanent commitment to pay fee. In a 2–0 away victory over Villareal on January 21, he made his club debut against the club on January 21. In a 2–0 home win over Athletic Bilbao on February 19, he scored his first goal for the club. He scored the first goal on the turn in his next league appearance, beating Valencia 2–1 over Real Madrid. Zaza was purchased outright by Valencia from Juventus until 2021 for the previous agreed fee, which is effective after June 30. In under ten minutes of a 5–0 home win over Málaga on September 19, he scored a hat-trick.

He was loaned to Torino for €2 million on August 17, 2018, with a €12 million obligation to buy at the end of the season. He scored two second-half goals in Torino's first game under new boss Davide Nicola's first game, helping Torino win by 22-0 after being two goals down at halftime.

Zaza's deal with Torino was terminated by mutual consent on August 31, 2022.

International career

Zaza has appeared in Italy's under-16, under-17, and under-19 classes.

He was called up by head coach Antonio Conte for a friendly match against the Netherlands and the first UEFA Euro 2016 qualifier against Norway on August 31. Zaza made his debut with the Italian national team on September 4th, winning by 2–0 over the Netherlands as a starter. In the 2–0 victory, Daniele De Rossi scored Italy's second goal after being fouled by Bruno Martins Indi in the ninth minute. Zaza scored his first goal for the Italian national team in the 16th minute of their opening Euro 2016 qualifier against Norway, with a 2–0 win. He was named in Conte's 23-man Italy squad for Euro 2016. He came off the bench on June 17 to set-up Éder's match-winning goal against Sweden in the 88th minute of his country's second group match, which qualified Italy to the Round of 16. He was brought on in the final seconds of extra time to make a penalty in the resulting penalty shoot-out against Germany on July 2nd, which he later missed due to a bizarre run up to the ball. Italy lost 6–5 and barred from the tournament. "I am sorry to have let the Italian people down" in the case that followed the match. I skipped the most significant part of my life, and I'll carry this burden with me for the rest of my life. I've always taken penalties like this and I was positive I'd score, but the ball broke and it went like that."

By the newly named Roberto Mancini, Zaza was welcomed to the Italy squad for its May and June 2018 amilies for the first time since Euro 2016. On June 4th, he appeared in a string of friendlies against the Netherlands, where he scored the opening goal of a 1–1 draw in Turin.

Michail Antonio has been fighting for his entire career to prove people wrong, but at West Ham, he's aiming for Mark Noble's assistance

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 22, 2023
INTERVIEW BY JAMES SHARPE: Michail Antonio is a fighter by his own admission. He has always been one of the best ones. He was in a few scrapes in his younger days, but it brought him to where he is now and it kept him there. It kept him fighting his way up from non-League, tussling for his chance, to the Premier League, and it's kept him at West Ham for the past nine years. Antonio is seated in a Portakabin at West Ham's Rush Green training ground and reads a list of the strikers with whom he has competed in the last near-decade: Simone Zaza, Jonathan Calleri, Marko Arnautovic, Javier Hernandez, Jordan Hugill, Lucas Perez, Sebastien Haller, Danny Ings, and Antonio is the main man.
