Early life

Hazard was born in La Louvière and grew up in Braine-le-Comte. His mother Carine, and father Thierry, were both footballers. His father spent most of his career at semi-professional level with La Louvière in the Belgian Second Division, playing mainly as a defensive midfielder. His mother played as a striker in the Belgian Women's First Division and stopped playing when she was three months pregnant with Eden. After playing football, both parents became sports teachers. Thierry retired from his position in 2009 in order to devote more time to his children.

Hazard is the eldest of four children. He has three brothers, all of whom play football, including Thorgan, who joined him at Chelsea in 2012 but then moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2015 and further to Borussia Dortmund in 2019. Thorgan had previously progressed through the youth ranks of Lille's biggest rivals Lens. Hazard's other younger brothers are Kylian and Ethan. On 15 July 2013, Kylian joined White Star Bruxelles, but then went on to play for Hungarian side Újpest, before also joining Chelsea, while Ethan remains playing in the youth academy of Eden's former club Tubize.

Hazard and his three brothers were raised in a comfortable environment with their parents ensuring they had whatever they needed to excel. The family lived "no more than three metres" from a football training ground and the brothers often ventured onto a training pitch through a small hole in order to hone and develop their skills. Growing up his idol was French playmaker Zinedine Zidane, with Hazard "watching him on television and online for hours."

Eden Hazard Career

Club career

Hazard started playing for his hometown team, Royal Stade Brainois, at the age of four. One of his youth coaches called him a "gifted" player during his time at the club. "He knew everything," he said. I had no one to teach him." Hazard spent eight years with the club before moving to A.F.C. Tubizes are available in Tubize. He was discovered by a Lille scout while playing in a local tournament with the club while at Tubize. The scout's subsequent report on the player prompted club officials to consult with Hazard's father and offer the young player an aspirant (youth) deal.

The parents of Hazard rejected Lille's academy director Jean-Michel Vandamme's proposal, afraid that the training facilities in France would be improved. Hazard's father explained later that the decision to join Eden and, later Thorgan, in France was the right option, because the youth's population remained so close to home and, at the same time, they integrated into structures that could develop, but unfortunately, it was a little lacking in Belgium for youth education.

Hazard joined Lille in 2005 and spent two years working in the club's local sports academy, due to the fact that Luchin's youth academy was not working at the time. He signed a three-year contract with Lille on May 28, 2007, the first professional contract he had signed. Hazard was promoted to the club's reserve squad in the Championshipnat de France amateur, the fourth level of French football, at the age of 16, but he also competed with Lille's under-18 team and the Coupe Gambardella in the 2007-08 season. Hazard made his amateur debut on September 1st in a league match against Racing Club de France as a second-half replacement in a 3–1 loss. In the team's 1–0 loss to Lesquin, he got his first appearance a week later.

Hazard was called up to the senior team by manager Claude Puel on November 14th after spending the majority of October and the early part of November with the club's under-18 team. He appeared in the game as a substitute and was later included in the 18-man squad against Nancy in a league match on Saturday, where he made his professional debut in the match and came on as a replacement in the 78th minute.

Hazard was recalled from the club's reserve squad and spent December with the team's reserve team. Hazard returned to the first team in January in three league matches against Metz, Sochaux, and Paris Saint-Germain, following the winter break. He was demoted to amateur level after the match against PSG, where he competed with the reserve team and the under-18 squad in the Coupe Gambardella. In a 3–2 victory over Vitré on May 17, 2008, he scored his first amateur goal. He was named Young Player of the Year by the National Union of Professional Footballers (UNFP) in the first international player to receive the award later this year.

Following the 2008–09 season, persistent media hysteria surrounded Hazard's transfer market availability in several nations. Despite Lille chairman Michel Seydoux's announcement that the player is off limits and Hazard's that he intends to remain at the club for at least another season, several clubs have expressed an interest in him. These included English clubs Arsenal and Manchester United, Inter Milan's Italian club Inter Milan, and Spanish clubs Barcelona and Real Madrid. Zinedine Zidane, a Frenchman, was personally recommended by the player to the latter club.

Hazard opened the 2009–2010 season on a high note in Lille's first competitive match of the season. In the first leg of the club's third qualifying round match in the UEFA Europa League, the goal, contributing to the team's 2–0 triumph, came against Serbian club FK Sevojno. In the club's second leg tie against Belgian club Genk on August 27, he scored his second European goal. It was Lille's last goal in the club's 4–2 victory. Hazard later admitted that his first bout of inconsistency had harmed him, saying, "The first two months were a bit difficult." I wouldn't say that I started doubting my abilities, but that I went through a rough patchy period.

Belgium national team manager Georges Leekens, quoting Hazard's latest stint on the bench at Lille, said that to recover his previous year's form, the player had to work harder both physically and mentally. Hazard's assistant coach, Marc Wilmots, also stated that he had a lazy attitude when training with the national team. Garcia said the following day that they were "excessive" and that "Eden is only 19 years old" and that "they will continue to make more progress in all areas." Leekens responded to Garcia's argument that players must think about the team, not themselves, during Belgium's match against Kazakhstan, in which Hazard failed to start or even appear on the bench. Hazard, a filmmaker, reflected on Leekens and Garcia's words in February 2011 saying, "I learned a lot during those few weeks." And since then, life has become much better.
