Mearion Shonie Bickhem III (born May 3, 1972), also known as Shonie Carter, is an American mixed martial artist.

He is a former WEC Welterweight champion, a UFC veteran, and a contestant on The Ultimate Fighter 4 reality show.

He has also participated in Pancrase, Shooto, King of the Cage, M-1 Global, KSW, and Bellator.

He is best known for his flashy attire, colorful vocabulary, outlandish appearance, and the use of the spinning backfist in combat.

Early life and martial arts background

Carter was born in Chicago, Illinois, and spent six years in the US Marine Corps before starting his career as a fighter. Carter attended Proviso East High School. He began his martial arts education at Triton Community College in River Grove, Illinois, before transferring to Carson-Newman College in Tennessee, where he began studying Judo and Jujutsu. Dr. Stephen Terrell and Dr. Stephen Karr. He was also an All-American Wrestler and competed in the Olympic trials. Carter, Judo, a semester of study, has entered the Tennessee state championship in the White-Green, Brown, and Black Belt divisions. He received state titles in the White-Breen and Brown divisions, as well as second in the Black Belt division. For his efforts, his instructor gave him his Brown Belt. Carter later added Kung Fu and Karate to his repertoire.

He also holds a record of 57 victories and 5 losses as a professional kickboxer throughout his MMA career.

Personal life

Carter is single and has three children: Sierra Rena, Samarion Andreas, and Kavion Osiris. He resides in Chicago and works at the Honbu Dojo Shidokan USA under the guidance of USA Shidokan Branch Chief Eddie Yoshimura. He is a bartender and bouncer at Fiesta Cantina in Chicago, Illinois, and a personal trainer at the LA Fitness Gym's Ravenswood location.

Career

Carter has competed in a multitude of competitions, both large and small. During his career, he has won at least ten belts in various companies. He began his career in 1997, primarily in the Extreme Challenge promotion. Despite losing his debut to Laverne Clark in just 9 seconds, he went on to record an 11-1-2 record before meeting UFC welterweight champion Pat Miletich. He was disqualified by a vote.

Carter made his UFC debut against Brad Gumm in Pancrase and defeated him. He continued to win big victories over Chris Lytle and Matt Serra. After defeating JT Taylor, he competed in fledgling promotion World Extreme Cagefighting, becoming the WEC welterweight champion. To Karo Parisyan, he will lose his first title defense. Other notable fights included a loss to future UFC champion Jon Fitch, a triumph over future UFC fighter Jess Liaudin, and a victory over Jason Black, who was undefeated in 22 fights prior to the match.

Carter's UFC record stood at a lukewarm 3–2. He applied for the fourth season of The Ultimate Fighter, a reality television show on Spike. The season, titled "The Comeback," featured MMA veterans whose careers in the UFC could use a kickstart. Carter joined Team Mojo and was chosen to face Rich Clementi of Team No. Love. Carter arrived early in the show and flopped through his first workout. Carter secured a two-round decision over Clegg, with support from his cornerman Matt Serra. Carter faced Matt Serra in the second round in a rematch. In their first match, much was made of Carter's come-from-behind KO by spinning backfist. Despite being landed another spinning backfist, Carter lost the game by decision.

Carter gained notoriety and inflamed indignation from his fellow participants over his habits, including his unusual style of dressing and various artistic commissions, during the exhibition. He enraged both teams by unilaterally deciding to train with Team No Love for a day. He also begged Clementi to corner him in his Serra combat. On the show, his MMA resume revealed that he had 198 professional fights.

Carter did not appear on the season finale's card after the conclusion of the show. He did, however, make an appearance on UFC Fight Night: Sanchez vs. Riggs, losing by unanimous vote to Marcus Davis. Carter then went back to face smaller companies in smaller promotions. Throwdown Middleweight Championship at Throwdown ETC – Showdown on February 20, 2009, with George Lockhart's split decision victory. Out of his last nine fights, he lost 7 out of his last nine fights.

Carter announced his first retirement in January 2013 with around 240 full contact karate, kickboxing, and MMA bouts under his belt.

Carter came out of retirement in January 2014 when he met Matt Dwyer for the BFL Worlderweight Championship. Carter was disqualified by TKO (retirement).
