Jean-Marc Mormeck Career

Professional career

He started as an amateur in 1990 and then switched to a professional in 1995. Mormeck lost two minor four-round bouts on points early in his career, but he kept winning for years after. Mormeck won the French light heavyweight title by a unanimous decision over Alain Simon on November 10, 1998. He defended the title three times before relinquishing it.

Mormeck won the WBA cruiserweight championship by a 9th-round technical knockout victory over Virgil Hill on February 23, 2002. He won the WBC cruiserweight crown over Wayne Braithwaite, Alexander Gurov, and Virgil Hill for three consecutive defenses.

Mormeck also lost his WBA and WBC cruiserweight titles to O'Neil Bell after being knocked out in the 10th round. This bout, which took place on January 7th, 2006, was for the uncontested (WBC/IBF) cruiserweight championship.

Mormeck regained the WBA and WBC titles from Bell in a rematch (Bell lost the IBF title due to a dispute with the group) by unanimous decision on March 17, 2007.

Mormeck's second title defense ended in defeat as he was defeated by mandatory challenger and knockout specialist David Haye on October 10, 2007. Mormeck was severely injured in the 7th round after being struck by a strong right from Haye. Despite Mormeck's arrival just in time, the referee realized he was dazed and in no way to go forward, which caused the game to be called off and Haye defeated the opponent by knockout.

Mormeck returned to the ring after a two-year absence, vs. Vinny Maddalone for the first time as a heavyweight. He defeated the veteran heavyweight over 8 rounds.

On November 2nd, 2010, Mormeck defeated Uzbek heavyweight and WBA#7 Timur Ibragimov (30-3-1, 16 KO) in Halle Carpentier, Paris. Mormeck started slowly but gained a split decision (116-112, 113-113).

Mormeck was signed in October 2011 to face unified Heavyweight Champion Wladimir Klitschko at Esprit Arena, Düsseldorf, Germany, until Klitschko pulled out after suffering a kidney stone was removed on December 2nd 2011. The brawl was postponed to March 3, 2012. Mormeck was only the third cruiserweight champion to win a world title at Heavyweight, following Evander Holyfield and David Haye. However, he was disqualified by a fourth round KO.

Mormeck returned to the ring in June 2014 against Tamas Lodi of Hungary after another extended layoff. Mormeck expressed disappointment for the game immediately after the match, calling for a fast title shot before he could put an end to his career.

Mormeck, on the other hand, had to get through a brawl with former EBU champion Mateusz Masternak, who he lost by majority decision. Following his loss, he said he had promised before any of his final two battles that he would have missed.
