Roach and his brothers Joey and Pepper were taught by his father, Paul Roach, at a young age. Roach admitted that he was involved in over 300 street fights throughout his youth, in an interview with Dan Patrick of the AUDIENCE channel. He claims to have bit another man's eye out in self-defense, fearing for his own life in a single fight.
He was a dominant force in the New England amateur and AAU ranks as a youth. Roach became a professional in 1978, defeating as a novice and winning his first ten bouts. Roach starred under Eddie Futch and went 26-1 before playing in a historic match at the Boston Garden on June 11, 1982. The card was the first of two times that all three Fighting Roach Brothers appeared at the same time. Both Joey and Pepper won their undercard matches, but Freddie lost in the main event by a unanimous vote to Rafael Lopez. Freddie will return to compete twice for regional championships.
Roach, a man who was known for his ability to put on a barrage of punches, began to show early signs of Parkinson's disease. Futch begged Roach to leave, but the boxer refused and continued to fight with his father as his coach. He went on to lose five of his last six fights before retiring at the age of 26. His highest paycheck was $7,500.
