Shirley Hazzard Life

Shirley Hazzard (born 1931 – December 12, 2016) was an Australian-American novelist, short story writer, and essayist.

She was born in Australia and earned the National Book Award for Fiction, the Miles Franklin Award, and the William Dean Howells Medal in 2010.

Hazzard also wrote non-fiction books, two of which were based on her experiences with the UN Secretariat, which were highly critical of the institution.

Early life

Hazzard was born in Sydney, the younger daughter of a Welsh father (Reginald Hazzard) and a Scottish mother (Catherine Stein Hazzard), both of whom immigrated to Australia in the 1920s and met while building the Sydney Harbour Bridge. She attended Queenwood School for Girls in Mosman, New South Wales, but she was sent to Hong Kong in 1947 after her father became a diplomat and was posted to Hong Kong.

The parents of Hazzard had intended for her to attend the University, but the university had been destroyed in the war. Rather, she began working with the British Combined Intelligence Services at the age of 16, and then moved to Australia when her sister was sick, then to New Zealand, where her father became Australian Trade Commissioner there. "I began to feel that people could enjoy life and should enjoy life," she said of her East experience.

Hazzard and her family immigrated to New York City in 1951, and she spent ten years as a Typist at the United Nations Secretariat. She was sent to Naples for a year and began to explore Italy; she returned to Naples every year sinceward.

Personal life

Hazzard married writer Francis Steegmuller in 1963 and the pair emigrated to Europe. They grew up in Paris, with trips to Italy, and in the early 1970s, settled in Capri. They also owned an apartment in New York City. Steegmuller died in 1994.

Hazzard, 85, died in New York City on December 12, 2016. She was reported to have dementia.
