Matthew John Reilly (born 2 July 1974) is an Australian action thriller writer.
Early years
Reilly was born in Sydney, Australia, on July 2nd, second son of Ray (an employee of the Department of Corrective Services) and Denise, a mathematics tutor. He grew up with his brother Stephen in Willoughby, an upscale suburb on Sydney's lower North Shore.
In 1992, Reilly graduated from St Aloysius' College in Milsons Point, Sydney. Between 1993 and 1997, he studied Law at the University of New South Wales, graduating 31st out of 250 students. He served as a member of the student law society's publication Poetic Justice while at university.
Personal life
Reilly married Natalie Freer in 2004. Freer attended Loreto Kirribilli, a nearby high school, and then enrolled in Psychology at the University of New South Wales, where she studied psychology. Reilly cites Freer for assisting him in self-publishing his first book. Natalie, who had suffered from anorexia and depression, committed suicide in early December 2011 when Reilly was in South Australia on a book tour promoting Scarecrow and the Army of Thieves. Reilly canceled his remaining book tours and revealed on Facebook that he would not return to internet communications.
Reilly owns a life-size statue of Han Solo frozen in carbonite from Star Wars, a golden idol from Raiders of the Lost Ark, and a DeLorean from Back to the Future. Reilly, a huge fan of Hollywood blockbusters, hopes to direct a film adapted from one of his own books one day.
Reilly has been in a relationship with Kate Freeman and has moved with her to Los Angeles, California, in 2015.
Career
At the age of 19, Reilly wrote Contest, his first book, and then self-published it in 1996. Every major publisher in Australia had it rejected, causing him to self-publish 1,000 copies using a bank loan. Cate Paterson, a Pan Macmillan commissioning editor, discovered a self-published version of Contest in a bookstore. Pan Macmillan also committed Reilly to a two-book contract. When attending the University of New South Wales, he wrote Ice Station, his second book. Publishers in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany were quick to pick up the book. He has since printed over 7.5 million copies of his books in over 20 languages around the world. In 2011, Scarecrow and the Army of Thieves was Australia's best-selling fiction book. Three more of Reilly's books have been best-selling Australian titles in years of publication: Seven Ancient Wonders (2005), The Five Greatest Warriors (2009), and The Tournament (2013). A Sydney Morning Herald reviewer applauded Reilly's writing for its bold move but criticised it for putting credulity into doubt and "frequent logical errors."
Literary Superstars, Reilly's seventh film project, was released in 2007. The script was picked up by Darren Star (Sex and the City) and purchased by Sony Pictures for the ABC Network by ABC Pictures. Jenna Elfman has opted to play the lead role. When the 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike began, the pilot episode was on the stage, lyzing Hollywood. The pilot was on indefinite suspension before being deemed out by the ABC before being dropped by the ABC.
Reilly, Reilly, in partnership with Benjamin Maio Mackay's Preachrs Podcast OnLine & OnStage, launched an audio drama version of Reilly's best-selling book Ice Station in 2015. This was the first time he had translated his books outside of a literary context. Ice Station Live, Matthew Reilly's Ice Station Live, was on display in Adelaide, South Africa, and it was piloted by John Reilly in the first three episodes of a new full audio drama. No further information has been released about the project as of January 2021.
He began to write a story in 2017 that could be shot on a modest budget of around $15 million. This was the screenplay for Interceptor, in which a female US Army captain at a US missile interceptor center had to prevent sixteen nuclear missiles shot at sixteen American cities. Only one large set is used in the film. Reilly co-authored a book with screenwriter Stuart Beattie (Pirates of the Caribbean, Collateral) whose ventures included partially rewriting but also introducing Reilly's work to several writers and other film enthusiasts in Los Angeles. Eventually, Netflix invested Reilly as the first-time director, with Elsa Pataky playing the villain in the lead role; Pataky's husband, actor Chris Hemsworth, playing the villain; and Netflix's Chris Hemsworth is one of the film's executive producers. On Netflix, the film was released in mid-2022.
