Early life and careers

On May 22, 1944, John Flanagan was born in Sydney, Australia. He graduated from Waverley College with the intention of becoming a writer. As he grew up, he switched careers and joined an advertising firm. He had intended to become a trainee copywriter, but the department later assigned him to study as a media researcher. He wrote an offensive poem directed toward one of his senior executives when working as a media researcher trainee. The poem eventually made it to the desk of one of the company's directors. Flanagan was called into the director's office, where he lauded Flanagan's writing abilities and gave him the job of trainee copywriter. Flanagan began working in an ad agency for 20 years and co-wrote Hey Dad, a sitcom.
