Gene Wolfe Life

Gene Rodman Wolfe (May 7, 1931 – April 14, 2019), an American science fiction and fantasy writer, was born on May 7, 1931.

He was known for his dense, allusive prose as well as his Catholic faith's strong presence.

He was a prolific short-story writer and novelist who received many science fiction and fantasy literary awards, and his book of the New Sun series (four volumes, 1980-1993), the first part of his "Solar Cycle."

Based on a survey of readers who suspected it and several other series as single entries, Locus magazine ranked it as the third best fantasy novel published before 1990.

Personal life

Wolfe, the son of Mary Olivia (née Ayers) and Emerson Leroy Wolfe, was born in New York City. As a young child, he had poliomyelitis. When he was 6 years old, he and his family moved to Houston, Texas, where he attended Lamar High School in Houston. He began writing his first speculative fiction in The Commentator, a student literary journal, while attending Texas A&M University.

Wolfe dropped out during his junior year and was drafted to fight in the Korean War. He obtained a degree from the University of Houston and became an industrial engineer after returning to the United States. He served as a senior editor on the staff of Plant Engineering for many years before retiring to write full-time, but his most notable professional achievement is his contribution to the Pringles potato chip machine.

Wolfe and his partner Rosemary, who lived in Barrington, Illinois, a Chicago suburb, where they raised four children. Wolfe also has three granddaughters. In 2013, the Wolfes moved to Peoria, Illinois. Wolfe underwent double bypass surgery on April 24, 2010. In early 2013, Wolfe's right eye underwent cataract surgery. Rosemary Wolfe's wife died on December 14, 2013 from a string of illnesses, including Alzheimer's disease. "She didn't remember my name or that we were married for a period," Wolfe said, "but she did remember that she loved me."

Wolfe died of cardiovascular disease at his Peoria home on April 14, 2019, at the age of 87.
