Shawn Peter Raul Mendes (born August 8, 1998) is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and model.

He gained a following in 2013 after posting song covers on YouTube.

He attracted the attention of artist manager Andrew Gertler and Island Records A&R Ziggy Chareton, which culminated in him signing a contract with the record label.

He has since released three studio albums, headlined three world tours, and received several accolades. Mendes' self-titled debut EP (2014) and his debut studio album Handwritten (2015), whose album "Stitches" debuted at number one in the United Kingdom and the top ten in the United Kingdom and Canada.

He then launched his second studio album, Illuminate (2016), whose singles "What Matters Holding Me Back" and "Reality Is Over" reached the top ten in several countries.

Early life and education

Shawn Peter Raul Mendes was born and raised in Pickering, Ontario, to Karen Mendes (née Rayment), a real estate agent, and Manuel Mendes, a businessman who sells bar and restaurant supplies in Toronto. His father hails from Algarve, Portugal, while his mother comes from England. Aaliyah is his younger sister. He was raised in a religious family. He played youth soccer with Pickering FC.

Mendes graduated from Pine Ridge Secondary School in June 2016, where he competed ice hockey and soccer, joined his high school glee club, and trained as Prince Charming at one time. He also auditioned for the Disney Channel in Toronto.

Personal life

At the age of 14, male gamers learned to play guitar by watching YouTube tutorial videos. He began posting cover videos on YouTube less than a year ago. Since posting a cover from Justin Bieber's "As Long As You Love Me" on the social media platform Vine in 2013, Mendes' "As Long as You Love Me" gained 10,000 likes and followers the next day.
