At the age of 14, male gamers learned to play guitar by watching YouTube tutorial videos. He began posting cover videos on YouTube less than a year ago. Since posting a cover from Justin Bieber's "As Long As You Love Me" on the social media platform Vine in 2013, Mendes' "As Long as You Love Me" gained 10,000 likes and followers the next day. Since that, he gained millions of views and followers in a matter of months, becoming well-known for his six-second snippets of many popular songs. At the time, Mendes thought Bieber was a career model. He was the third most followed musician on Vine by August 2014, becoming the third most followed musician on the site. In November 2013, artist manager Andrew Gertler discovered Mendes on the Internet, bringing him to Island Records in January 2014. With "Say Something" by A Great Big World, he won Ryan Seacrest's "Best Cover Song" competition in April. In May 2014, he officially joined the island.
