He and his parents grew up in Nelson, British Columbia, Canada. He founded "Feed The Need" with longtime friend Kara Martin, and has raised funds for various charities, as well as performing at many regional high schools to raise food for the local food bank. He continues with the charity today, but it has been rebranded as "Live To Give" this year.

Hook began studying piano at the Royal Conservatory from the age of 4. He performed piano and trombone in a jazz combo and jazz big band under Rick Lingard's direction. Shawn began writing and recording his own music when enrolled in a music composition course at Mount Sentinel Secondary School.

Shawn Hlookoff's first appearance after Colin Davison (a.k.a.) was released in 2004. Jude Davison, Selkirk College Music School's vocal coach, offered to produce it. He also appeared with the disco cover band Shag as a trombone player and back-up vocalist. He studied audio engineering before enrolling at The Art Institute of Vancouver. Both Sides, Shawn Hlookoff's second independent 11-track album released in 2006, was titled Both Sides, also known as Shawn Hlookoff.

In 2008, he became the first artist/songwriter to sign to ABC Studios in Los Angeles. He appeared on Good Morning America for the first time during this period. His compositions were included on several ABC television shows, including "Life in Faith" on Eli Stone, "She Could Be You," on Kyle XY and "Be Myself" in Greek, as well as "Be Myself" in Greek. On MTV's program "The Hills," his song "Without You" premiered. His music appeared in other series such as Samurai Girl, General Hospital, and others. During his time in Los Angeles, he earned his first acting role as a guest star on the Fox television show Bones.

Shawn Hook, a British artist, released his debut album Cosmonaut and the Girl, produced by Jon Levine on EMI with "So Close," "Every Red Light," and "Two Hearts Set on Fire" as singles from the album. In 2012, he recorded "Follow the Lights," a holiday song. He appeared on Listen Deep Records in 2013. He worked with DJ Poet Name Life and Chebacca on a track titled "Laser Ray" which was released on Listen Deep Records in 2013. It was his 2014 hit song "Million Ways" that helped him to gain traction and a following. On Billboard's Canadian Hot 100, it was his second most popular charting single, winning him three hits in a row on the Canuck Hot 100. "Sound of Your Heart," his highest charting single, has peaked at #23 as of June 2015. In promotional ads for Season 20 of The Bachelor, "Sound of Your Heart" was featured.

Hook had signed a major US label Hollywood Records to his name on December 21, 2015. Hook's US Songwriting and Recording contracts are merged into one joint venture by Hollywood and ABC, bringing Hook's US Songwriting and Recording contract together under one roof. Hook joined Lindsey Stirling on her North American tour in the fall of 2016. He was voted Elvis Duran's Artist of the Month in February 2016 and appeared on NBC's Today Show hosted by Kathy Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb and broadcast nationally where he performed live on his single "Sound of Your Heart" on NBC. On their North American tour, he opened for Marianas Trench later this year.

Vanessa Hudgens appeared on "Remind Me" in April 2017. In the music video, the two stars appeared in the music video, which was also released the month. They appeared as a duet on So You Think You Can Dance's season 14 finale.

Hook is licensed under exclusive agreement with EMI Music Canada. He has a worldwide deal with Hollywood Records for recordings outside of Canada.
