Career

Doherty appeared on television shows, including Voyagers, in 1982. Michael Landon's invention and production of Father Murphy. Jenny Wilder, an 11-year-old Doherty, appeared on Little House on the Prairie, which Landon starred in and produced in the same year. Doherty appeared in only four episodes on the show's final season, which was cancelled in 1983.

In 1982, Doherty lent her voice to the animated film The Secret of NIMH. P.I. She appeared in an episode of Magnum, P.I. ("A Sense of Debt") is followed by an early episode of Airwolf for which she was nominated as the Best Young Actress: Guest in a Series at the 6th Youth in Film Awards in 1984.

Maggie Malene appeared in the teen film comedy Girls Just Want to Have Fun, alongside actress Helen Hunt and Sarah Jessica Parker. Doherty appeared on the family drama Our House from 1986 to 1988, gaining multiple Young Artist Award nominations.

Doherty's first major motion picture appearance came in the 1980 film Heathers, which premiered in 1988. Brenda Walsh, a teen actress from Aaron Spelling-produced television series Beverly Hills, 1990, attracted worldwide attention and renown for her breakout role as Brenda Walsh in the Aaron Spelling-produced television series Beverly Hills, 90210. Brenda's portrayal of Brenda in 1991 and 1992 earned her a Young Artist Award nomination for Best Young Actress Actress in a Television Series. In 1994, Doherty left the show after the fourth season.

During its first season on Sci Fi Channel, Doherty hosted Scare Tactics. Brenda in four of the first six episodes appeared as a guest star in the new series, reprising her old role as Brenda. As the guest director of the high school musical, her character, now a well-known theater actress and stage producer, has returned to life. Doherty said she was keen to return to the series later this season and then agreed to appear in three more episodes, including one in May 2009. The writers were keen to have Jennie Garth, who starred in her own 90210 role of Kelly Taylor, to recite scenes. It was reported that Doherty and Garth's characters would all be interested in the character Ryan Matthews (Ryan Eggold), which is reminiscent of their old rivalry for former bad-boy protagonist Dylan McKay (Luke Perry). Doherty and Garth later confirmed that the reports regarding their characters' love triangle were inaccurate.

Doherty was announced to co-star Dylan McDermott in the independent film Burning Palms, a parody of Los Angeles stereotypes, through five intertwining storylines in late 2008. (The film's world premiere was at the Newport Beach Film Festival in April 2010.) In the SciFi Channel adventure film The Lost Treasure of the Grand Canyon, Doherty appeared in a leading role. On December 20, 2008, the film premiered on the cable network.

It was announced on March 1, 2010 that Doherty would be a celebrity contestant on Dancing with the Stars for the tenth season. On Monday, March 22, 2010, the season premiered. Doherty was paired with two-time champion Mark Ballas in his sixth season on the show, but the two were the first couple to be disqualified in the second week, on March 30. "Doherty would not have left if we had just done scores," the judges said. To make her elderly father proud, she wanted to do Dancing with the Stars. For the finale, Doherty returned.

Doherty appeared in FEARnet's animated web series Mari-Kari, which debuted on June 3, 2010. Mari and Kari are identical twins, but Kari is already deceased and is a ghost. In the eight-episode display, Doherty spoke with Mari and Kari.

Doherty will appear in a one-hour reality series that will track her and her fiancé, Kurt Iswarienko, as they planned their wedding on July 21, 2011. Shannen Says premiered on April 10, 2012.

Doherty became a spokesperson for Education Connection in 2012 and appeared in an episode of The New Normal as her character Brenda Walsh from Beverly Hills, 90210.

It was announced on July 24, 2014, that Doherty and her long-serving co-star Holly Marie Combs would appear in their own road trip reality show, Off the Map with Shannen & Holly, which premiered on Great American Country on January 2, 2015. The six-episode series followed the pair as they traveled around the Southeast United States, stopping in Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. On the official website of Great American Country, viewers were able to vote on activities in which Doherty and Combs were present at each destination.

Doherty joined the cast of a Heathers television series in November 2016, first scheduled to air on Paramount Network in March 2018. She portrayed one of the new generation of "Heathers" in a way that was different from Heather Duke's character in the 1989 film. However, the Parkland school shooting affected the show's premiere, which was postponed due to the show's sombre tone and themes of high school violence. The network decided to cancel the show completely in June 2018. In the end, the series ran for more than five nights in October 2018.

Doherty regained her role as Brenda Walsh in the six-episode sequel BH90210, which premiered on FOX on August 7, 2019. She appeared in the film Undateable John, starring Daryl Hannah, Tom Arnold, and Margaret Cho in the same year.
