Adina Elizabeth Porter (born March 13, 1971) is an American actress.

Lettie Mae Thornton of HBO's True Blood (2008–2014), Kendra James on the HBO drama series True Blood (2008–2014), and Indra on the CW science fiction drama series The 100 (2014–present).

Sally Freeman, Lee Harris, Beverly Hope, and Dinah Stevens appeared on the first, sixth, seventh, and eighth seasons of the FX anthology series American Horror Story (2011–2018). Porter began her acting career on Off-Broadway, winning the Obie Award in 1996 for Venus.

In the 2001 revival of The Women, she made her Broadway debut.

She has been nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award and two Saturn Awards for her role in American Horror Story.

Life and career

Porter was born and raised in New York City, New York. She graduated from the State University of New York at Purchase. Butterfly McQueen, her first acting instructor, was her first acting instructor. Larry Earl Madison Jr., her second husband, has been married twice and has two children.

Porter began her acting career in the theatre, appearing in off Broadway plays and in regional theatres. The Debutante Ball, Aven' U Boys, Girl Gone, Silence, Cunning, Exile, Dancing on Moonlight and Hurricane are among her off-Broadway credits. In 1996, she received the Obie Award for Outstanding Achievement by an Actress for her appearance in Venus. In addition, she appeared in several productions at the New York Shakespeare Festival in 2001, where she made her Broadway debut with the Roundabout Theater's revival of The Women, directed by Scott Elliott, on PBS' Stage on Screen.

Porter began her film career as a guest star on television dramas including Law & Order, New York Undercover, Brooklyn South, and NYPD Blue. Gwen Walker, the NBC period drama American Dreams, appeared in NBC's American Dreams from 2002 to 2003, she had a regular role as housekeeper Gwen Walker. She made her debut in 1992 with Leopold/Loeb New Queer Cinema's Swoon, her debut in film. She appeared in small films such as The Peacemaker (1997), Gia (1998), Body Shots (1999), The Fluffer (2001), and The Salon (2005). Porter appeared in Jeff Bezdson's film adaptation of Ruben Santiago-Hudson's book Lackawanna Blues for HBO in 2005. For her role, she received the Black Reel Award for Best Supporting Actress: Television Movie/Cable. She went to the ER, Prison Break, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.

In 2008, Porter was cast as Lettie Mae Thornton, mother to Rutina Wesley's Tara Thorton, in HBO's True Blood. In the seventh and final season of the program, she was promoted to series regularity. She appeared in an episode of Grey's Anatomy in 2012. Kendra James appeared on HBO's The Newsroom from 2012 to 2014. In 2014, she debuted as Indra in the CW's post-apocalyptic drama The 100. Porter appeared in two unsold drama pilots for ABC, Doubt, and The Jury in 2016. Pearly Mae appeared on the first season of WGN America period drama Underground in 2016. Porter appeared as Lee Harris in the FX anthology film American Horror Story: Roanoke later this year, after previously appearing as a minor character in American Horror Story: Murder House in 2011. She received critical acclaim for her role in Roanoke and was nominated for the Best Supporting Actress on Television by Saturn. Beverly Hope portrayed Beverly Hope in American Horror Story: Cult, where she received second Saturn Award nominations, as well as a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Film. She was later promoted to series regular for American Horror Story's eighth season, Apocalypse, starring Dinah Stevens. In 2021, she appears in the tenth season of the series, Double Feature, where she plays Chief Burleson. Sheriff Susan Peterkin appeared in Outer Banks, a television series that premiered in 2020.
