Rachel Zawadi Luttrell (born 19 January 1971) is a Tanzanian-Canadian actress best known for her role as Teyla Emmagan, an Athosian warrior leader on Stargate Atlantis.
Early life
Luttrell was born in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, the niece of Veronica Makihio Luttrell of the Washambala tribe of the Usambara Mountains and Dr. William Leon Luttrell of Bossier City, Louisiana. She is one of four children in the United States. When she was five years old, her family immigrated to Canada, and she was raised in Toronto. Luttrell's soprano voice has multiple roots; her father, a former member of the critically acclaimed Toronto Mendelsohn Choir, supervised her. She studied ballet at the Russian Academy of Classical Ballet School and then studied piano at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.
Personal life
Luttrell is married to Loyd Bateman; the two children have two children together. Erica Luttrell, who is also an actor, and Amanda Luttrell Garrigus, who is an on-air personality for fashion and entertainment, are Luttrell's two younger siblings. Luttrell is sometimes described as "Rachel Z. Luttrell."
Career
Luttrell made her professional debut in Miss Saigon's premier production in Toronto, as well as "The Enchantress" in Disney's Beauty And The Beast's Canadian production. She will continue to appear in many other stage productions, including Once On This Island, Goblin Market, and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage's Las Meninas.
Luttrell will continue to appear in numerous guest star roles on television shows following his move to Los Angeles.
She was considering giving up on her acting career and enrolling at UCLA to study architecture after being frustrated with some of the roles being offered to her at the time. She travelled to the United Kingdom instead of studying at the British American Drama Association in Oxford, on a midsummer course at Balliol College. Luttrell appeared in her most high-profile role to date, as Teyla Emmagan on Stargate Atlantis, just short of her return to Los Angeles.
She appeared in the Canadian film A Dog's Breakfast, directed by her Stargate Atlantis co-star David Hewlett.
Luttrell's debut jazz album I Wish You Love, which was produced by Austrian record producer Gerrit Kinkel, stars Jeff Hamilton, Jennifer Leitham, Graham Dechter, and Konrad Paszkudzki.
