Ryan Sessegnon Career

Early life and career

Sessegnon was born in Roehampton, Greater London, to a Beninese descent family. Steven, Steven, who plays for Fulham, is his older brother, Chris, is a semi-professional footballer. Sessegnon is also a cousin of Beninese international footballer Stéphane Sessègnon.

Sessegnon and his brother Steven played for local club Wandgas FC as an infant. The pair signed for Fulham in 2008, the first time on their under-9s team. As he progressed, he was made to left back as a youth striker. "I loved seeing him go from left-back to when he was young," he said of left-back players Luke Shaw and Gareth Bale as players he looked up to while growing up to, saying, "I loved watching him bomb up and down the wing, set goals, and measure goals, so I think I try to imitate him."

Sessegnon attended Coombe Boys' School in New Malden, London, which is close to Fulham's Motspur Park training ground. Both brothers were on the team, and Coombe Boys won the ESFA PlayStation Schools' Cup in both 2014 and 2015, with Ryan scoring twice in the 2015 final. Despite being 15 years old at the time, Sessegnon was a regular for Fulham's Under-18 team by the 2015–16 season.

Club career

Sessegnon was promoted to the senior squad by manager of the year Slavisa Jokanovic for the 2016-2017 pre-season, having started training with the first team, though he was still aged 15. In a 3–0 friendly victory over Brighton and Hove Albion, he scored his first senior goal on July 19th.

Sessegnon made his first-team debut against Leyton Orient, aged 16 years and 81 days, on August 9th. In a 1–1 draw in a Championship match against Leeds United, he made his league debut on August 16th. He scored his first career goal in a league match against Cardiff City on August 20th, becoming the first professional footballer to score a goal in a Premier League match and the youngest individual to score in a Championship match. On his FA Cup debut against Cardiff on January 8, he was named one of the youngest goalcorers in the competition's history.

Sessegnon scored twice in a home match against Newcastle United's potential league champions on March 11th, with former Newcastle player Alan Shearer lauding his efforts as "brilliant." Sessegnon made 30 appearances in all sports, including in the second leg of Fulham's play-off semi-final loss against Reading, scoring seven goals, and the youngest player to be selected in the PFA Championship Team of the Year.

Sessegnon's media following soared as his debut season progressed. Sessegnon was rated as one of Europe's top 30 Under-20 players in February 2017, while Sports Illustrated named him as the 19th best under-20 player in world football in May 2017. Neeskens Kebano, a Fulham striker, said "the future of English football" with teammate Stefan Johansen saying it was "99% certain" he would be one of the world's best left-backs.

As the summer transfer window opened, enthusiasm from many Premier League clubs, including Everton, Liverpool, and Manchester United, was evident, with Sessegnon potentially paid for a £2 million compensation fee as Football Association rules dictated that he could not sign professional contracts until his 17th birthday on May 17. However, Sessegnon had signed his first professional contract with Fulham on June 28, 2017, effectively committing him to the club until 2020. "I have a lot of opportunities, so I want to keep doing it." Sessegnon cited the likelihood of playing regularly in the first team as his reason. "You should play as many games as you can," says the youth.

Fulham revealed on July 28th that Sessegnon would wear the number 3 shirt, up from his previous number 30. In a 1-1 draw with Cardiff on September 9th, he scored his first goal of the season. FourFourTwo selected Sessegnon among their Top Teenagers in the World list in November 2017, comparing him to Ashley Cole and David Alaba. Sessegnon scored his first professional hat-trick in a 5–4 victory over Sheffield United on November 21, 2017, becoming the first seventeen-year-old to score a hat-trick in English league football since Dele Alli in 2014. Sessegnon was named PFA and Championship Player of the Month after scoring six goals in January 2018, thanks to braces against Ipswich Town, Burton Albion, and Barnsley. Sessegnon was named tenth in Europe's most promising under 20 years in February. Sessegnon was included in CIES' prestigious list, with Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma on the 1st place and Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappé in third place, as well as Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappé in third place.

He was nominated for the EFL Championship Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season awards in April 2018. He was also named as the first Championship player to be nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year award. Sessegnon received five awards on April 15th, including Championship Player of the Season, Apprentice of the Year, and EFL Club Developed XI.

Matt Targett's signing in January was vital, as it enabled Sessegnon to play more as a left winger rather than a left back, where he was able to concentrate more on his offensive and finishing rather than his weaker defensive side of the game.

Fulham finished third in the league, allowing them to advance to the play-offs, where Sessegnon helped his side earn a spot in the play-off final by scoring the opening goal and assisting in the game-winning goal against Derby County. Fulham beat Aston Villa 1–0 in the Championship play-off final at Wembley on May 26, 2010; Tom Cairney assisted Tom Cairney's 23rd-minute goal in a 1–0 victory against Aston Villa in the Championship play-off final at Wembley, securing Fulham's promotion to the Premier League.

In a 2–0 home loss to Crystal Palace on August 11, Sessegnon made his first Premier League appearance in the new league campaign's first day. He scored his first Premier League goal in a 4–2 away loss to Cardiff City on October 20, becoming the first player born in the 2000s to score in the tournament. On December 8, he made his 100th appearance for the club, beginning in a 4–1 loss to Manchester United in a 4–1 league loss.

Fulham were relegated from the Premier League following a 4–1 loss to Watford on April 2nd.

Sessegnon signed for Tottenham Hotspur on a five-year contract with an optional one-year contract. The contract was said to be worth £25 million, which also saw Josh Onomah go to Fulham. Sessegnon did not make his Tottenham debut until the start of November due to a calf. In a match against Everton that ended 1-1, he came late due to injury time. In the following match, his Champions League debut came as he came off the bench against Red Star Belgrade and assisted in the scoring of Christian Eriksen. He made his first appearance in a Tottenham shirt in the Champions League against Bayern Munich in December, where he scored his first goal for the club, becoming the youngest Spurs player to score in a Champions League match.

Sessegnon joined 1899 Hoffenheim on a season-long loan contract on October 5, 2020. Fans of Hoffenheim voted him Player of the Month for November.

International career

Sessegnon appeared in the U17 Euros in 2016. On October 10, 2016, he scored his first goal for England Under-19s against Luxembourg in a European Under-19 Championship qualifier, scoring his second goal in a 2–0 victory.

Sessegnon was selected in the final 18-man squad for the Euro U19s finals on June 26th. After England defeated Germany 4-1, he scored three goals, two of which were two in a 4–1 victory, he finished the tournament as the joint top scorer for the first time. He was then included in the tournament's squad.

Sessegnon, 17, made his England Under-21 debut on March 27, 2018, defeating Ukraine 21-0 in a European Under-21 Championship qualifier qualifier.

Sessegnon was included in England's 23-man squad for the 2019 European Under-21 Championship, on May 27th.

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 1, 2024
Richarlison was involved in the majority of the 2-1 loss by Wolves in their last game, but there hasn't been spotted in a training video this week. Richarlison has been playing in superb form for Spurs since mid-December, scoring nine goals in his last ten Premier League games, so his absence would be a major blow to Spurs. He isn't the only one on the hospitalization table, with Ryan Sessegnon, Destiny Udogie, and Pedro Porro all needing attention.

Destiny Udogie is back, and COULD return for Tottenham Hotspur vs. Crystal Palace, but Ange Postecoglou's injury woes persist, as Ryan Sessegnon is unlikely to play again this season

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 28, 2024
MATT BARLOW: Destiny Udogie is fit to return for Tottenham against Crystal Palace. In the victory over Brighton on February 10, the Italy international left back sustained a knee injury and missed the home loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers. Spurs did not play last week because their opponents Chelsea were in the Carabao Cup final and return when Palace visited on Saturday.

Ryan Sessegnon says he's 'gutted beyond belief' after suffering another injury, this time around 35 minutes, as he recovers from long layoff in seven months

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 27, 2024
After undergoing a second hamstring surgery in seven months, Tottenham Sessegnon, a left-back, has posted an emotional note on social media. During a Spurs Under 21s match last week, the 23-year-old suffered more heartache after he came back just 35 minutes into his recovery. Sessegnon has only played for Spurs this season, making his sole appearance as a late replacement in their 1-0 victory over Burnley in the FA Cup third round.
