Ryan Christie Career

Club career

Christie was born in Inverness in 1995 and is the son of footballer Charlie Christie, who was playing for Caledonian Thistle at the time and who had previously been a reserve for Celtic.

Christie began working in the Inverness Caledonian Thistle youth system at the age of 10, before concluding his first professional job in 2011. He signed a new deal with the club under Terry Butcher, and he was one of several youngsters to be promoted to the club's first team.

Christie made his Scottish Premiership debut against Celtic on December 29, 2013. In the 100th minute of Aberdeen's Scottish League Cup Final, he came as a replacement, a game Inverness lost on penalties. Despite this, Christie helped the club finish in the top-six of the Scottish Premiership. In a 2–1 loss against Motherwell on April 1, 2014, Inverness's first goal was his first goal. Christie scored two more goals against Dundee United and St Johnstone later this season. Christie signed a new deal with Inverness following an excellent 2014–14 season.

In a 2–0 victory over Hamilton Academical, Christie scored his first goal of the 2014-15 season. Christie was named SPFL Young Player of the Month for August after his performances against Dundee, Motherwell, Celtic, Kilmarnock, and Partick Thistle. For the first time in his career, he was suspended by referee Willie Collum for two-bookable offences during a match against St Mirren in October 2014. Christie continued his good fortune by winning the SPFL Young Player of the Month award in February 2015, as well as his unstoppable appearance throughout the year. Despite the fact that he didn't win that award, he was later honoured with the SFWA Young Player of the Year award. Christie entered the 2015 Scottish Cup Final and was later substituted for James Vincent, who scored the winning goal in a 2–1 victory over Falkirk. Christie described winning the Scottish Cup as "unbelievable, impossible to put into words" after the match.

Christie joined Celtic on a four-year contract on September 1, 2015. Christie was immediately sent back to Inverness on a season-long loan contract after signing for the Scottish champions. In November, he sustained a knee injury against Motherwell and was recalled by Celtic so he could work with their medical staff at their Lennoxtown training center. Celtic revealed in December 2015 that they would recall Christie from his loan spell at Inverness.

Christie made his Celtic debut on January 23, 2016, beating St Johnstone 3–1, who were also an 88th-minute replacement for Stuart Armstrong.

Christie joined Aberdeen on loan until the end of the 2016–17 season on January 24, 2017. In a 2–0 win over Partick Thistle on February 4, he scored his first goal for Aberdeen. He helped Aberdeen finish second in the 2016–17 Scottish Premiership and advance to the 2017 Scottish Cup Final, but he was unable to participate in the cup final because it was against his parent club Celtic.

Christie returned to Aberdeen on loan for the majority of the 2017-18 season, signing in June 2017 as part of a contract for Jonny Hayes.

Christie returned to Celtic for the 2018-19 season. Neil Lennon, who returned to Celtic later this season, said in July 2019 that he wanted to sign Christie for Hibernian as part of a proposed deal for John McGinn. Christie won a penalty, caused a goalkeeping mistake, and hit a "wonderful left-foot shot" that resulted in each goal in the eventual 3–0 victory. In November 2018, Christie signed a new deal with Celtic. He scored his only goal of the 2018 Scottish League Cup Final in Hampden against former Aberdeen Club Aberdeen on December 2nd. His season came to an end in the Scottish Cup semi-finals against Aberdeen, where he sustained facial fractures in an aerial collision with opponent Dominic Ball, who was suspended due to the unpredictable nature of the challenge.

In a 7–0 victory over St Johnstone in the first game of the 2019-20 Scottish Premiership season, Christie scored a hat-trick. Celtic defeated Aberdeen in the 2019-20 Scottish Cup semi-finals, delaying the normal date against Aberdeen due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Scotland, which also resulted in Celtic being awarded the Premiership title after the season was suspended). He scored a very similar goal in the first round of the match and with almost the same amount of time, but then missed his penalty in the subsequent shootout after a 3–3 draw after extra time; he was the only Celtic player to fail with his effort when the team lost the trophy.

Christie joined England on a three-year deal in August 2021, earning the club's AFC Bournemouth a reported transfer fee of about £1.5 million. Christie came off the bench to make his Bournemouth debut in the team's 3–0 win over Barnsley on September 11, 2021.

International career

Christie was called up by Scotland U21 on August 25, 2014. Christie made his Scotland U21 debut against Slovakia U21 on September 9, 2014, arriving as a replacement for Lewis Macleod in Scotland's second half, which Scotland defeated Ireland 3–0.

Christie was given his first call-up to the senior Scotland squad for a friendly against the Netherlands in November 2017, and he played the full 90 minutes of the 1–0 loss. In a 2–1 away victory over Cyprus in UEFA Euro 2020 qualification, he scored his first international goal on November 16, 2019, opening the scoring with a curling shot from outside the penalty area. In September 2020, he scored penalties in two games as Scotland drew with Israel and defeated the Czech Republic in the 2020-21 UEFA Nations League.

Christie was asked to pull out of Scotland's squad for the Euro 2020 play-off semi-final against Israel after being in close contact with Stuart Armstrong, who had positive for COVID-19. Christie returned to the team and scored Scotland's only goal in the Euro 2020 play-off final against Serbia; the Scots secured the tie after a penalty shootout for the first time in 22 years.

Shambolic VAR is SLAMMED again after ruling out Bournemouth's goal against Arsenal in 'baffling' decision - as even Gunners legend Ian Wright and Piers Morgan admit they 'got away with it'

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 4, 2024
Both sides found themselves on the wrong end of divisive decisions from the officials during a dramatic showdown at the Emirates, with Ryan Christie escaping a red card for a high tackle and the Cherries seeing a goal ruled out in the second half (left). Strikes from Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard put Arsenal on course to move four points clear at the top of the Premier League but the visitors hit back through Antoine Semenyo, the forward bundling in after Christie's strike hit the woodwork. The effort was chalked off, however, after Dominic Solanke was adjudged to have fouled goalkeeper David Raya (top right) after backing into him in the build-up. As the loose ball dropped inside the penalty area, Solanke moved into Raya's path and looked to pressure him while the stopper tried to punch away. Cherries boss Andoni Iraola was incensed (bottom right) but his appeals fell on deaf ears.

VAR-sical! Fans FUME after Ryan Christie's high tackle on Bukayo Saka wasn't punished with a red card in Arsenal's crucial match against Bournemouth

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 4, 2024
Christie's foot planted into Saka's knee early in the first half at the Emirates but the video assistants did not deem the challenge was worthy of a red card. Saka had initially cleverly flicked the ball away from Lewis Cook in midfield but as the winger looked to dance around Christie, a raised boot made contact with his leg. Visibly irritated by the lack of any punishment, Saka rolled down his sock and revealed a bloodied gash halfway up his leg, just below his left knee.

Man United didn't play like they were listening to Erik ten Hag in 2-2 draw at Bournemouth - they were outclassed and looked like a bunch of strangers thrown together, writes CHRIS WHEELER

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 13, 2024
BOURNEMOUTH 2-2 MAN UNITED - CHRIS WHEELER AT THE VITALITY STADIUM: When Ineos sit down to decide Erik ten Hag's fate, they won't be too worried about the chasm between Manchester United and the Premier League's top three. Even missing out on the Champions League might not be fatal for the Dutchman. But when they think about days like these, days when United were outclassed by Bournemouth, well that might be a different matter. Not once, but twice this season. Bournemouth came away from Old Trafford with a well-deserved 3-0 victory in December, and they would not have been remotely flattered by a similar winning margin here at the Vitality Stadium.
