Rben doess Santos Gato Dias (born 14 May 1997) is a Portuguese professional footballer who plays for Benfica and the Portugal national team as a defender.

Early life

Ivan, a professional football player who was born and raised in Amadora, Dias, has an older brother who also loves football and nicknamed him "Ruby." John Terry, Nemanja Vidi, Rio Ferdinand, and Vincent Kompany were among his idols as he began to play in the Premier League. He'd play football wherever he could on the streets or in his house with his brother Ivan.

Club career

Dias began his football career with Estrela da Amadora after being welcomed by a close family friend. Dias began playing as a striker before switching to defense due to his team's losing by two goals during a match. He joined Benfica's youth academy in 2008, where he played first as a midfielder before heading to central defense for the junior team until 2015. He made his professional debut with Benfica B in a 2015-16 LigaPro match against Chaves in the same year. Rui Vitória's 18-year-old Dias for Benfica's 16-second leg tie against Zenit Saint Petersburg on March 7th, 2016, after three of his four main centre-backs were unable to travel to Russia. He played for the B team in the second division during the season, his highest finish ever achieved in the second division. He also helped the junior team reach the final of the 2016-17 UEFA Youth League.

Dias made his debut in a Primeira Liga match against Boavista on September 16, 2017. He underwent appendicitis surgery after two months of outstanding performances, including two games against Manchester United in the Champions League, with sidelining him for a month. In a Taça da Liga match (2–2) against Vitória de Setbal on December 29, 2017, he scored his first goal for Benfica. He scored his first goal in the Primeira Liga against Rio Ave (5–1) on February 3, 2018. He was named Primeira Liga's Best Young Player of the Year at the end of the season.

Dias was linked to a big money transfer to Lyon, France, and he stayed with Benfica until 2023, despite widespread rumors linking Dias to a big money transfer to French side Lyon. Dias played his 100th game for the club on Sunday and scored the first goal against Rio Ave in a 2-0 home win.

Dias scored the first goal against Moreirense in a 2–0 victory on September 26, 2020. After the game, coach Jorge Jesus revealed that this was likely to be his last game for the club.

Dias joined Manchester City in England on a six-year deal, with initial fees of €68 million (£61.64 million) up to Benfica, raising the total cost of the transaction to €56.6 million (£51 million). Dias made his City debut against Leeds United on October 3rd, 2020.

Following a string of good defensive results, Dias was named Man of the Month for November 2020. In a 2–1 home league win over West Ham United on February 27, 2021, Dias scored his first goal for City. He was lauded for his role in Manchester City regaining the Premier League title this season by bringing composure, leadership, and stability to the defense. Dias received the FWA Footballer of the Year award for the 2020–21 season, with him dubbed a "comfortable winner" ahead of Harry Kane and Kevin De Bruyne, as the first defender to win the award since Steve Nicol in the 1988–89 season. He was also named Manchester City's Player of the Season and Premier League Player of the Season.

Dias captained Manchester City for the first time on September 15, 2021, assassinating Jack Grealish in a 6–3 home Champions League victory over RB Leipzig. Dias opened the scoring in Manchester City's 2–1 victory over Aston Villa on December 1st, his first goal from outside the box in his career.

Pep Guardiola, the City's first injury in five years, forced Dias to miss two months of the season, Manchester City's second leg of their Champions League match against Sporting CP and Portugal's qualification play-offs for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, 2022. In a 3–0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion, Nathan Aké returned from injury on April 20, replacing him in the 46th minute. Dias sustained another hamstring injury in a match against Newcastle United on May 7th, putting him out of action for the remainder of the season.

International career

Dias played for the Under-17 team at the 2014 European Under-17 Championship. He captained the Under-19 squad in the 2016 UEFA European Under-19 Championship, two years ago. He captained the Under-20 team at the 2017 U-20 World Cup, losing 5–4 on penalties in the quarterfinals to Uruguay. In a 2019 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualification match against Wales, he made his Under-21 debut for the Under-21s.

Dias was called up to the Portuguese side by Portugal's top manager Fernando Santos on March 15, 2018, ahead of international friendslies against Egypt and the Netherlands. However, four days later, he was suspended from the team after suffering from right ankle sprains. Dias was selected in Portugal's 23-man squad for the FIFA World Cup in Russia on May 17th. He made his international debut against Tunisia on September eleven days later. Despite being present at the World Cup, he did not appear in any of Portugal's four matches in the tournament.

Dias began establishing himself in the central defense following the World Cup, defeating José Fonte's position alongside Pepe in all of Portugal's 2018-19 UEFA Nations League matches, helping Portugal reach the 2019 UEFA Nations League Final on home soil. Portugal defeated the Netherlands 1–0 in the tournament's final on June 9, with Dias being named man of the match. He was selected in the "Team of the Tournament" for his performances throughout the tournament.

Dias scored his first international goals during the 2020-21 UEFA Nations League, netting a brace against Croatia in a 3–2 victory on November 17.

He was selected to the squad for the UEFA Euro 2020. In a 2–4 loss to Germany in the UEFA Euro 2020, he scored his own goal in the 35th minute in the 35th minute. He appeared in all of Portugal's matches and was eventually disqualified in the round of 16, losing 1–0 to Belgium.
