Richard Swift (March 16, 1977 – July 3, 2018) was an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and short film maker.
He was the founder, founder, and recording engineer of National Freedom, a recording studio based in Oregon, and performed as producer, collaborator, muse, and influencer on films including The Shins, Damien Jurado, David Bazan (of Pedro the Lion), Foxygen, Jessie Baylin, Wake Owl, Cayucas, and Guster.
Swift was a founding member of the indie rock band The Shins and The Arcs.
During The Black Keys' live band's 2014-2015 tour, he performed as both the tour bassist and backing singer.
Early life
Swift, a born in California on March 16, 1977, in a musical Quaker family, began performing and singing in churches at an early age. His family moved often in his youth, spending time in rural Minnesota, Utah, and Oregon. He worked at a farm near International Falls, Minnesota, as a youth.
Personal life and death
Swift lived in Cottage Grove, Oregon, where he first met his wife, Shealynn. They had three children.
Swift was hospitalized in Tacoma, Washington, suffering from an undisclosed "life-threatening illness" and that a GoFundMe had been established to pay for his medical bills, according to Pitchfork on June 19, 2018. He died in Tacoma on July 3, 2018. Swift's family released a statement six days later announcing that he suffered from alcohol use throughout his life and that his death was caused in part by related "complications from hepatitis, as well as liver and kidney disease."
Career
On Metro One Recordings, Ricardo "Dicky" Ochoa's first solo album under the name Dicky Ochoa was released in 2000. Company with Frank Lenz and Elijah Thomson was released in 2002, but it wasn't until 2002 that it was released an album called Company. He appeared on the Promise Keepers Live Worship album in 2002 as a musician. Swift moved to Southern California in 2001 to pursue his solo recording career. He released Walking Without Effort, his first album with drummer and producer Frank Lenz, in the same year. On a four-track cassette recorder, he recorded a majority of his early music. Velvet Blue Music has produced four small pressings of "properly made" 7" vinyl singles from 2002 to 2005. Swift also released The Novelist in 2003 and Walking Without Effort (recorded in 2001) in 2005 and then combined the two albums to create the double-disc The Richard Swift Collection Vol. In August 2004, Leftwing Recordings issued 1 of them. On their 2003 Somewhere Cold Awards Hall of Fame list, Somewhere Cold voted The Novelist EP of the Year in December 2003, while a year later, in December 2004, they ranked The Richard Swift Collection Vol. 1.
