Benny Blanco Career

Life and career

Blanco, a resident of Northern Virginia, began producing hip-hop instruments in his bedroom and recording his own vocals on top of them. His first serious exposure to music came in 1994, when he was 6 years old with Nas' "The World Is Yours" and All-4-One's "I Swear" on cassette tapes, which inspired his early recordings. Blanco's rapping caught The Source and executives at Columbia Records' attention after early experiments with beat making and recording himself on his boombox. He was on Camp Airy for many years of his youth in Thurmont, Maryland.

Blanco's family moved to New York City from Virginia to talk with labels and producers, eventually gaining an apprenticeship with producer Disco D.

Blanco was mentored by songwriter and producer Dr. Luke, who went from Blanco to his production company Kasz Money Productions, for many years. Blanco co-produced and co-wrote several songs under Dr. Luke's tutelage, including hits like Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream," Kesha's "TiK ToK," and Taio Cruz's "Dynamite."

He appeared on and produced Britney Spears' "Circus" in 2008 (with Dr. Luke and Claude Kelly). The album debuted as the second best-selling digital song in the United States, with over 3.2 million downloads as of July 2016. According to the IFPI, "Circus" was one of the top ten best-selling songs of 2009, with 5.5 million digital copies sold around the world last year.

Blanco wrote and produced his first charting hits without Dr. Luke, including Maroon 5's "Mopes Like Jagger," Gym Class Heroes' "Step Heroes" and "Don't Trust Me" in 2011. Blanco went on to work on Maroon 5's Platinum-selling album Overexposed and its lead single "Payphone" starring Wiz Khalifa earlier this year.

Blanco was presented with the Hal David Starlight Award at the 44th Annual Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013, an award given to young artists who have yet to make a name for themselves in the music industry. "They picked the wrong person, I'm in a room with people I shouldn't necessarily be serving food to," he joked in his acceptance address.

Blanco has released 29 number-one songs and has been lauded for his work with artists including BTS, Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber, The Weeknd, Selena Gomez, Britney Spears, Lana Del Rey, Miguel, Halsey, and Camila Cabello, among others.

At the 2017 iHeartRadio Music Awards, Blanco was named Producer of the Year.

Blanco collaborated with Baltimore rapper Spank Rock to produce Spank Rock and Benny Blanco Are...Bangers & Cash, a collaborative EP that piqued the interest of many in the industry and sparked links to future collaborators Amanda Blank and Santigold in 2007. Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, and other notables also praised the EP.

Blanco's debut album as a solo artist on his own label Friends Keep Secrets with Interscope Records in July 2018. The song debuted on top of the Billboard Hot 100 in New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, Singapore, and the United Kingdom, and it was also a global success, with charts in New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, Singapore, and the United Kingdom all topped the charts and ranked within the top ten of the charts in several other nations, including Australia, Canada, Denmark, and Norway. He recorded "I Found You" with Calvin Harris, "Better to Lie" with Jesse and Swae Lee, and "Roses" with Juice Wrld starring Brendon Urie later in 2018. On December 7, 2018, his debut album Friends Keep Secrets was released.

Blanco's Story "I Found You/Nilda's Story" in January 2019 with Calvin Harris and Miguel, an initiative of the Brooklyn Defender Services, Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services and the American Civil Liberties Union. The song debuted with Jake Scheuer's video narrating the life of one Honduran woman and her two-year-old son Keyden.

Blanco's "I Can't Get Enough" was released in February 2019 with Tainy, Selena Gomez, and J Balvin. Blanco and Juice Wrld performed "Graduation," the company's second collaboration after "Roses" on August 30, 2019.

Blanco's first artist collaboration with Justin Bieber called "Lonely" was released in October 2020. Juice WRLD and "Unlearn" with Gracie Abrams were the second and third singles released in December 2020 and March 2021, respectively.

On the day of release, a deluxe version of his album Friends Keep Secrets 2 was announced on March 26, 2021, and was designated as RIAA platinum.

Blanco's first artist collaboration with BTS members Jin, Jimin, V., and Jung Kook, as well as Snoop Dogg's "Bad Decisions" was released on August 5, 2022.

On Benny's YouTube channel, Blanco and celebrated chef Matty Matheson premiered a new collaborative cooking show, Matty and Benny Eat Out America. Benny Beats' "The Cave" in which Benny teaches Matty to rap was the first episode. Lil Dicky, Mason Ramsey, Diplo, Laird Hamilton, and others were among the new episodes.

Blanco made his television debut on April 16, 2020, playing a fictionalized version of himself on the first and second seasons of FXX's Dave with Lil Dicky.

Blanco and chef Matty Matheson premiered "Stupid F***ing Cooking Show" on Benny's YouTube channel on March 31, 2021.
