Jason William Mizell (January 21, 1965 – October 30, 2002), better known by his stage name Jam Master Jay, was an American singer and DJ.
Run-D.M.C.'s DJ, he was the head of the influential hip hop band Run-D.M.C. Run-D.M.C. was a member of the National Guard in the 1980s. Mizell was shot and killed by an unknown assassination source while recording new music at his studio in Queens, New York City, on October 30, 2002.
Early life
Jason Mizell was born in Brooklyn, New York City, the son of Jesse Mizell and Connie Thompson Mizell (later Connie Mizell-Perry) whose other children are Marvin L. Thompson and Bonita Jones.
Jason started playing trumpet at the age of three. He learned how to play bass, guitar, and drums. Prior to discovering turntablism, he performed at his church and in various bands. He and his family immigrated to Hollis, Queens, New York City, in 1975, at the age of 10, and started DJing at the age of 13. He was a high school buddy of Wendell "DJ Fite," who is best known for his 13-year association with The Beastie Boys.
Mizell, a teen, was a member of a party that organized residential robbery. An encounter with an unmanned security guard frightened him into stopping the robbery, and as an adult, he was known for preventing criminal activity among his friends and family members.
He lived in Atlantic City, New Jersey, where turntablism pioneer DJ Def Lou Hauck taught him to crossfade. He jumped ahead of his musical experience, and after a year of DJing, he felt he was strong enough to perform in front of audiences. He began attending Andrew Jackson High School in New York City's Queens, originally named Jazzy Jase.
Personal life
Jam Master Jay was connected to the Mizell Brothers, a well-known production team for Gary Bartz, Johnny "Hammond" Smith, and others.
Mizell suffered a car accident and a leg fracture, respectively, on consecutive Christmas holidays.
Jam Master Jay was the father of three sons, including Jason Mizell Jr. (who appears as DJ Jam Master J'Son), Jesse Mizell, and TJ Mizell (also a DJ), and Tyra Myricks (born August 1992).
Career
He began playing in parks and later played in bars. He also started throwing small parties around the area. He grew quickly after he got a pair of Technics 1200, since he was able to practice at night with headphones on when he was supposed to be sleeping.
"Just wanted to be a part of the band," Mizell said. He performed bass and drums in several garage bands before joining Run-D.M.C. He began working Joseph "Run" Simmons and Darryl "D.M.C." in 1982. McDaniels' parents enrolled in high school and decided to DJ for them because he wanted to be part of the band. Mizell performed keyboards, bass, and live drums on Run-D.M.C's album Raising Hell. Mizell stayed in his childhood neighborhood in Hollis, Queens, for the rest of his life.
Mizell established Jam Master Jay Records in 1989. The brand is best known for its sign-ins, 50 Cent and Onyx. After Jason Mizell's assassination on October 30, 2002, Jam Master Jay Records was disbanded.
The Scratch DJ Academy in Manhattan is part of Mizell's legacy. The academy, which was founded in 2002, was the year of his death, was established to "provide unparalleled education and exposure to the DJ and producer's art form."
