Born 31 March 1963, Paul Joseph Mercurio (born 31 March 1963) is an Australian actor, dancer, and TV presenter.
Mercurio is best known for his lead role in Baz Luhrmann's Strictly Ballroom (1992).

Early life
Mercurio was born in Swan Hill, Victoria, in March 1963, his father was Gus Mercurio, a character actor. At nine years old, Paul began ballet. He later moved to Perth, Western Australia, where he attended John Curtin Senior High School, now known as John Curtin College of the Arts, where a theatre named after him exists. He praises his theatre arts instructor for inciting him to follow his dream. During his high school years, Mercurio concentrated on acting, but after he graduated, he rode the Indian Pacific Railway from Perth to Melbourne, where he studied at the Australian Ballet School.
He was Principal Dancer with the Sydney Dance Company by the age of 19 in 1982, a position he held for ten years. During this period, he was hired to choreograph six works by the company. Mercurio left the Sydney Dance Company in August 1992 to form the Australian Choreographic Ensemble, which performed from 1992 to 1995, where he was the principal dancer and principal choreographer.
Personal life
Mercurio has been married to his wife Andrea since 1987, and the three children, Emily, Elise, and Erin, are three years old.
He appeared on the Australian version of the television show Who Do You Think You Are? In 2012, he learned that his grandfather was a member of La Cosa Nostra's Milwaukee division (the Sicilian mafia) in the 1950s. Stage and screen career
Mercurio made his film debut in Baz Luhrmann's breakout film Strictly Ballroom, earning an Australian Film Institute Award nomination in 1993. Mercurio was a choreographer on the film. Antonio Vargas, the actor who played Fran's father, also choreographed scenes in the film.
Mercurio's other film credits include: Exit to Eden, Back of Beyond, Cos, Red Ribbon Blues, Welcome to Woop Woop, The First 912 Weeks, Kick and Sydney. Spilt Milk was a short film directed by him, wrote, choreographed, produced, and directed by him. Mercurio has appeared in independent films including Hunting for Shadows and A Silent Marriage with director Davo Hardy.
Mercurio played Sal in Promised (2019), a film directed and co-produced by Nick Conidi and starring Tina Arena, Antoniette Iesue, and Daniel Berini in a supporting role. On October 24, 2019, the film was released in Australia.
Baz Luhrmann expressed some curiosity in using Mercurio in Moulin Rouge to Mercurio's agent, but Mercurio later discovered that there was no place for him in the film, not even through the production company. He hasn't appeared in any other Luhrmann films, and only appears in Disc 4 of Red Curtain Trilogy as a pixelated picture.
In 1992, Mercurio made his television debut in a documentary about his life, Life's Burning Desire. In the Emmy Award-winning US TV mini-series The Bible: Joseph, Joseph starred in Joseph's lead role. He appeared in the 1998 mini-series drama The Day of the Roses, a depiction of the 1977 Granville railway disaster. During the 1990s, there was a lot of nostalgia. Mercurio guest appeared on Australian television shows including Blue Heelers, All Saints, Murder Call, Murder Call, Medivac, Heartbreak High, Water Rats, and The Day of the Roses. Mercurio was a judge on the Australian version of Dancing with the Stars until August 2008, but he was barred from the judging panel because he was deemed "too sweet" for television. In the New Zealand version, he served as a judge. In 2008, he started Mercurio's Menu, where he travels Australia and dishes in different locations.
Mercurio continues to perform and choreograph professionally. He was a movement consultant on Will Smith's I, Robot, and choreographed an American TV commercial for Coca-Cola, the Harry M. Miller film version of Jesus Christ Superstar and Annie Get Your Gun. He appeared on stage in The Full Monty in January 2004. Mercurio teaches students at Dance World Studios in Melbourne full time.
