David Wheeler (born 20 March 1963), also known as David Thewlis, is an English actor, producer, screenwriter, and author. Thewlis first came to fame as a performer in the film Naked (1993), for which he received the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actor.

Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter film series and Sir Patrick Morgan / Ares in Wonder Woman (2017) were his most commercially successful roles to date. Dragonheart (1996), Seven Years in Tibet (1997), The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (2008), The Theory of Everything (2011), and Anomalisa (2015) are among the notable film performances.

In the third season of Fargo (2017), he also portrayed Cyrus Crabb, as well as Critics' Choice Television Award and the Golden Globe Award.

In the Netflix animated sitcom Big Mouth (2017–present), he currently appears as the Shame Wizard.

Early life

David Wheeler, born in Blackpool on March 20, 1963, was the son of Maurice (née Thewlis) and Alec Raymond Wheeler. Both parents worked at his father's store. He has an older sibling and a younger sibling. He was a member of QED as a youth and appeared on stage with a punk rock band called Door 66. He was educated at Highfield High School in Blackpool's Marton district. He later enrolled at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, graduating in 1984.

Personal life

From 1992 to 1994, thewlis was married to Welsh actress Sara Sugarman from 1992 until their divorce in 1994. He had a brief friendship with English actress Kate Hardie. From 2001 to late 2010, he was in a symbiosy with English actress Anna Friel. Gracie's daughter, Gracie, was born on July 9, 2005, and later became an actor. On August 5, 2016, Thewlis married French designer Hermine Poitou. Both of the pair live in Sunningdale, Berkshire.

Thewlis appeared in a small part of Up the Elephant and Round the Castle, a 1980s sitcom. As a member of Rodney's short-lived band, he appeared in a 1985 episode of BBC sitcom Only Fools and Horses, 'It's Only Rock and Roll'. Buddy Holly's debut on stage at the Regal in Greenwich was his first professional appearance.

Naked (1993; dir.) was thewlis' breakout role; dir. The National Society of Film Critics, Kevin Leigh, the London Film Critics Circle, the New York Film Critics Circle, and the Cannes Film Festival honor Johnny, a homeless, highly observant, rambling street philosopher for whom Thewlis was named Best Actor by the National Society of Film Critics (United States). In Prime Suspect 3, opposite Helen Mirren and Ciarán Hinds, he appeared on television as James Jackson, a sexual predator. He made his first television appearance in Valentine Park before that.

Thewlis appeared in a number of films during the 1990s, mainly fantasy and period, including Restoration (1995), Black Beauty (1994), and Seven Years in Tibet (1996), opposite Brad Pitt. He was nominated for a British Independent Film Award for Divorcing Jack (1998) and appeared in a Samuel Beckett's Endgame (2000) television film. Bernardo Bertolucci's Besieged (1998), the Coen brothers' The Big Lebowski (1998), and Paul McGuigan's Gangster No. 1 are among Bernardo Bertolucci's Notable Performances. 1 (2000), opposite Paul Bettany and Malcolm McDowell.

He auditioned for the role of Quirinus Quirrell in the Chris Columbus directed film Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, but the role went to Ian Hart. Despite missing out on the first film, Remus Lupin appeared in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in 2004. As he was director Alfonso Cuarón's first choice for the role, he did not have to audition. In four other films in the series, thewlis reprised his role.

He appeared as a SS Commandant of a Nazi death camp and the father of the main character in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, which was well received. Kingdom of Heaven (2005), Terrence Malick's The New World (2005), and The Omen (2006) are among Ridley Scott's books that appear in the following excerpts.

In the biopic The Lady directed by Luc Besson, thewlis played late Dr. Michael Aris, husband of Nobel Prize Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi of Burma, with Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh as Suu Kyi. He received the International Festival of Independent Cinema Off-P Camera Award in 2012. He appeared in Separate We Come, Separate We Go, directed by Harry Potter co-star Bonnie Wright in the same year.

Thewlis was scheduled to film scenes for a Donald Crowhurst biopic The Mercy on the beach at Teignmouth, Devon, playing Donald Crowhurst's press agent, Rodney Hallworth, while Colin Firth is playing Donald Crowhurst. In addition, he appeared in Regression, a drama that was released in fall 2015. Inspector Goole appeared in Helen Edmundson's BBC TV version of J. Defeated him in September 2015. An Inspector Calls from B. Priestley. He played King Duncan in the film Macbeth in October 2015.

Thewlis appeared in Wonder Woman (2017), the DC Comics film starring the same name. In 2017, he briefly reprised his position as Ares in the Justice League. He appeared as V. M. Varga, the principal antagonist of Fargo's third season. His appearance was highly praised, and he's been nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award, Critics' Choice Television Award, and the Golden Globe Award as a supporting actor.

Thewlis has appeared in the Netflix film I'm Thinking About Ending Things, directed by Charlie Kaufman, for the upcoming 2020 season.

In 1995, Thewlis directed Hello, Hello, Hello, which was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Short Film. In addition, he wrote, produced, and starred in the film Cheeky (2003).

The Late Hector Kipling, Thewlis' black comedy novel set in the art world, was released by Simon & Schuster in 2007. In 2021, Weidenfeld & Nicolson published Shooting Martha, his second book.
