Nathaniel Joseph Ruess (born February 26, 1982) is an American singer-songwriter.
He is the lead singer of the indie pop band Fun, as well as The Format.
He also appears as a soloist as of 2015.
Early life
Ruess was born as Larry Ruess and Bess Zinger's second child. John Ruess, his uncle, was a performer on Broadway and influenced Ruess' musical career.
Due to repeated bouts of pneumonia that Ruess had as a child, his family was moved to a farm in Glendale, Arizona. In the lyrics of Ruess' song "The Gambler," Ruess' pneumonia and the movement are referenced. Ruess remained in Arizona throughout his childhood and attended Deer Valley High School, graduating in 2000. Ruess performed in punk bands during his time in high school and decided to study music professionally after graduation. "I'm not one to take lessons," Ruess states, "I'm not one to teach lessons." "I'm not sure how to sing, so I decided that the only way I'm going to learn how to perform was to go into my car and play it as loud as possible and try to hit all those notes." As a way to support himself while still pursuing his musical aspirations, he worked in a law firm.

Personal life
Ruess dated fashion designer Rachel Antonoff, the sister of Fun guitarist Jack Antonoff, from 2009 to 2013. Rachel and Ruess provided backing vocals on Jack's album "Dakota" from 2007. Rachel appeared on some Fun songs and appeared in the video for "We Are Young" later this year. Rachel and Ruess worked on The Ally Coalition, an advocacy group designed to raise concerns of LGBTQ issues.

Career
The Format released a five-song EP called EP in 2000, which piqued local curiosity and culminated in the band's signing to Elektra Records in 2002. On October 21, 2003, the band's first studio album, Interventions + Lullabies, was released, triggering more local mainstream success. The band's fanbase began to rise, and the Format label, Snails, debuted with Atlantic Records in April 2005. However, they were barred from Atlantic while recording their second album, Dog Problems. They eventually created The Vanity Label, which was released on July 10, 2006. Ruess revealed on the band's website on February 4, 2008 that the Format will not be releasing another album.
Ruess approached Jack Antonoff of Steel Train and Andrew Dost, formerly of Anathallo, immediately after the break of the Format. Spin's September 20, 2009 story gave them their first demo, "Benson Hedges." Fun's first studio album, Aim and Ignite, was released four months after releasing their first single, "At Least I'm Not As Sad (As I Used to Be). The album received generally favorable feedback and peaked at 71 on the Billboard 200.

Fun said on their official website on February 5, 2015, that "there was no new Fun album in the works"; rather, all three members were engaged in their own projects.
"You get a little selfish about the songs you write, and it's really difficult to do so in a group setting, where two others are present and you have to worry about everyone else's feelings," Ruess said in an interview with Rolling Stone. I'm writing and performing these songs about myself. That line becomes a lot less blurry when you work with designers over bandmates."
Ruess was invited to appear on Brian Wilson's album No Pier Pressure in addition to his solo release. Wilson, a Beach Boys co-founder, mourned Ruess' voice to his deceased brother and longtime bandmate Carl Wilson. Ruess continued to contribute guest vocals to Emile Haynie's newest book, We Fall. Ruess' first single from his debut album, titled Nothing Without Love, was released on February 23, 2015.
