KATHRYN BATTE AT THE TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR STADIUM: After what had been a difficult break with Ghana, getting sent off was the last thing Mohammed Kudus needed. Julen Lopetegui had said that West Ham would look after Kudus upon his return. When the forward opened the scoring against Tottenham after 18 minutes, it had looked as if he had put those national team troubles behind him.

KATHRYN BATTE: The forward saw red in the 86th minute on Saturday after lashing out at Micky van de Ven and Pape Matar Sarr. Kudus was originally shown a yellow card by referee Andrew Madley, but this was upgraded to a straight red on VAR review. The forward aimed two kicks at Van de Ven while the defender was on the floor, then shoved the Spurs man in the face after he had got up to confront him. Despite his team-mates' attempts to retrain him, Kudus then also pushed Sarr in the face.

MATT BARLOW AT THE TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR STADIUM: After a fortnight spent stewing over the meltdown at Brighton this was the perfect remedy for Ange Postecoglou. Not simply three precious points in a London derby, but a victory to answer questions about spirit and character, having fought back from behind in a brisk transformation sparked by a bold substitution. Postecoglou sent on Pape Matar Sarr for James Maddison when the scores were level at 1-1 at half time and restored a better balance in Tottenham's midfield.
