Professional wrestling career

In 2000, Hettinga began working with Ultimate Pro Wrestling (UPW). He tagged with Samoa Joe at UPW Proving Ground on December 12, 2000 in Santa Ana, California, and defeated debuting Al Katrazz with Basil. He also wrestled at UPW Live against Samoa Joe for the Heavyweight Championship, but was unable to win the series.

Knox started wrestling for Islas' group Impact Zone Wrestling in 2002 after being coached by Steve "Navajo Warrior" Islas. On two occasions and the Tag Team Championship, he was scheduled to win the Heavyweight Championship twice and the Tag Team Championship with colleague and rival Derek Neikirk on one occasion.

Knox was signed to a World Wrestling Entertainment developmental contract in February 2005 and made a few appearances on WWE television, including one as a masked "jihadist" for Muhammad Hassan, the cause of Hassan's dismissal from WWE. Deep South Wrestling, mainly competed for their Atlanta, Georgia-based developmental territory.

Knox appeared on the ECW's striptease segment on June 20, 2006, as a heel, breaking from the backstage area and coating her with a towel before escorting her off stage, though he wasn't identified on camera. Kelly later revealed that she was Knox's on-screen girlfriend, and he told her that he did not approve her stripping in front of anyone but her. Kelly accompanied him on his debut in ring, defeating Danny Doring, to the ringside as a valet. Knox was pushed hard, interfering in matches, and squashing his opponents. After growing jealous of Kelly Kelly's admiration of Punk, he developed a short-lived tag team with Test before embarking on a rivalry with CM Punk. Punk won every match in the feud, from a qualifying match against Dismember's Extreme Elimination Chamber match for the ECW World Championship in December to Dismember's Extreme Elimination Chamber match for the ECW World Championship in December.

Knox made his pay-per-view debut at Survivor Series, where he partnered with Team Rated-RKO to face Team DX, but he was the first man to be disqualified after receiving a superkick from Shawn Michaels, in a match that Team Rated-RKO would lose. Following his demise, DX mocked him for the first time as he was virtually unknown among the others. Kelly Kelly was forced to abandon Kelly Kelly after a mixed tag team match against Kevin Thorn and Ariel at Dismember, resulting in his team's loss. On the next ECW episode, he assaulted her, bringing the pair together for good.

Knox returned to ECW's episode on February 13, 2007, where he defeated CM Punk with ease. Knox was taken off television for several months in order to return to Deep South Wrestling. Since beating the Major Brothers, Knox and Derek Neikirk, the reformed Team Elite, were destined to win the Tag Team Championship on March 1. Knox was then sent to WWE's Florida-based territory, despite DSW's dissolution, but he was referred to WWE's Florida Championship Wrestling.

Knox defeated Balls Mahoney on September 11 of ECW's edition, defeating Balls Mahoney. In a rematch to Mahoney next week, he lost. He then defeated Nunzio easily the week after. After weeks of wrangling between the two camps, they finally met on August 26 of ECW, where they had an ECW Championship scramble qualifier that was won by Finlay.
