Matthew David Lewis (born 27 June 1989) is an English film, television and stage actor, best known for playing Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter films, Jamie Bradley in The Syndicate and Corporal Gordon "Towerblock" House in the BBC Three comedy drama Bluestone 42.
Early life
Matthew David Lewis was born on 27 June 1989 in Leeds, West Yorkshire, to Adrian Lewis and Lynda Needham. He was raised in the nearby town of Horsforth. He is the youngest of three boys, has two older brothers, Chris, a film editor, and Anthony, an actor. He attended St Mary's Menston Catholic Voluntary Academy.
Personal life
Lewis married Angela Jones in Italy on 28 May 2018, after the two had become engaged in November 2016. The couple had met in January 2016, when Lewis participated in the annual Celebration of Harry Potter event at Universal Orlando, where Jones was a VIP event manager for the resort and the event.
Lewis is a vice-president of the Leeds Rugby Foundation charity. Lewis hosts the Leeds United podcast "Doing a Leeds" with former professional footballer Jermaine Beckford. In February 2021, it was announced that Lewis became the first Patron of the Bambisanani Partnership.
Career
Lewis has been acting since the age of five. In 1995, Kay Mellor's first film appearance appeared in Any Kind of Life (1995). He appeared in the BBC One crime drama Dalziel and Pascoe before appearing in the ITV series' Heartbeat and Where the Heart Is in 1999 and 2000, respectively.
Castings were held around the country for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the British author J. K. Rowling's book adaptation. Lewis, a fan of the series, appeared at the Queens Hotel, Leeds, first being asked two months later to do a screen test for director Chris Columbus, eventually landing the role of Neville Longbottom. In 2001, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone were released, and they became a critical and commercial success. Lewis wore a set of false teeth, shoes two sizes too large, a fat suit, and ear prosthetics. Lewis performed in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets a year later; Lewis has said that his favorite lines came from the film.
Both Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005) premiered to critical acclaim. In 2007, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix were announced.
