Manoj Bajpayee (born 23 April 1969), also known as Manoj Bajpai, is an Indian film actor who has worked in Hindi cinema and has also appeared in Telugu and Tamil language films.

He has been named in two National Film Awards and four Filmfare Awards.

He was awarded Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award, in 2019 for his contributions to art. Bajpayee, a small village in Narkatiaganj, Bihar, aspired to be an actor since childhood.

He migrated to Delhi at the age of seventeen and applied for the National School of Drama, but was refused four times.

When studying in college, he continued to do theatre.

Bajpayee made his debut in Drohka (1994), as well as a small role in Shekhar Kapur's Bandit Queen (1994).

He played Bhiku Mhatre in Ram Gopal Varma's 1998 crime drama Satya, which was a revelation after a few unnoticed roles.

Early and personal life

On a small village called Belwa near the city Bettiah in West Champaran, Bihar, Bajpayee was born in a brahmin family on April 23, 1969. He is the second child in his five siblings and was named after actor Manoj Kumar. Poonam Dubey, one of his younger siblings, is a film designer. His father was a fisherman, and his mother was a housewife. Bajpayee, the son of a farmer, would do farming during their holiday. He wanted to be an actor from the start of his childhood.

Their father had trouble obtaining funds for their education. He attended a "hut school" until fourth grade and then started his education at Khrist Raja High School, Bettiah. He graduated from Maharani Janaki Kunwar College in Bettiah with a 12th class.

At the age of seventeen, he came to Satyawati and then to Ramjas College, Delhi University. Bajpayee had heard about the National School of Drama from actors such as Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah, so he applied. He was refused three times and then attempted suicide afterward. After actor Raghubir Yadav's suggestion, he attended director and acting coach Barry John's workshop. After being taken aback by Bajpayee's behavior, John hired him to assist him with his teaching. He attended the National School of Drama for the fourth time, but the school did not have a teaching position for him.

Bajpayee was married to a Delhi girl but was forced to leave during his time of struggle. He met actress Shabana Raza, who is also known as Neha, right after her debut film Kareeb (1998). The couple married in 2006 and they have a daughter.

Bajpayee performed in the biographical drama Bandit Queen (1994), following his one-minute appearance in Govind Nihalani's Drohkaal (1994). The film's casting director, Tigmanshu Dhulia, suggested his name to Shekhar Kapur, who was in charge of the film. Bajpai was considered for the role of dacoit Vikram Mallah in the film, which later went to Nirmal Pandey. In the film, Bajpayee played dacoit Mann Singh. During this period, he appeared in a television series named Kalakaar, produced by Hansal Mehta and Imtihaan (Doordarshan).

When Mahesh Bhatt offered him the soap opera Swabhimaan (1995), which aired on Doordarshan, Bajpayee was a struggling actor. He promised to do the serial for a small price. With the comedy Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar, Bajpayee's year 2000 began! All together, Tabu and the crime drama Ghaath appeared in The crime drama. After his 10-year-old daughter was beaten and killed in Jaago, he played a police officer who takes the case into his own hands. He appeared in a supporting role in Yash Chopra's romantic drama Veer-Zaara (2004) during the same year. Bajpayee played Major Suraj Singh in 1971, the first time he appeared in a major Suraj Singh. Bajpayee's next film was Aarakshan (2011), a socio-drama based on caste-based reservations in India.
