She went on to appear in many popular films, including Waqt Hamara Hai (1993), Krantiveer (1994), Karan Arjun (1995), Sabse Bada Khiladi (1995) and Baazi (1995). In all of these films, she mainly portrayed the leading actor's love interest.

As Rajkumar Santoshi, a filmmaker whose earlier film Ghatak: Lethal (1996), portrayed her as the female protagonist in his 1998 film China Gate, an optimistic rendition of Seven Samurai, things changed. However, events did not go as expected. Santoshi and the actress' friendship soured. Kulkarni had been barred from the film, and she was only reinstated after gangster Chhota Rajan intervened on her behalf. When the film was finally released, it was an average earner. Also, even though Kulkarni had a following in such high numbers, the only song in the film, "Chamma Chamma," was picturized on Urmila Matondkar. The album turned out to be a chartbuster, which greatly raised Matondkar's fame, which was to add insult to injury.

Kulkarni, Angered and ecstatic at the turn of events, struck out at Santoshi, accusing him of reducing her screen time because she had rejected his advances. Santoshi denied all rumors connected to the movie, and the case was treated with a sombre burial. However, this was to be the death blow to Kulkarni's career. After that, she appeared in a handful of movies, and new ones were not forthcoming. Chhupa Rustam: A Musical Thriller (2001), her last film success.
