Octavia Lenora Spencer (born May 25, 1972) is an American actress, writer, and producer.

She has been given several awards, including an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award.

She is one of three black actresses to receive two consecutive Academy Award nominations in back-to-back years, and the first black actress to be nominated for an Academy Award in 1996's drama A Time to Kill.

She made her breakthrough in 2011 when she appeared in The Help in 1960s America, where she received several accolades, including the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

She received the National Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Ryan Coogler's biopic Fruitvale Station (2013).

Spencer received additional Academy Award nominations for portraying other women in 1960s America, Jane Vaughan, the mathematician in the biographical drama Hidden Figures (2016), and a cleaning woman in the fantasy film The Shape of Water (2017).

Smashed (2012), Snowpiercer (2013), Get On Up (2014), The Divergent Series (2015-2016), The Shack (2017), Luce (2018), and Ma (2019). Spencer has created Randi Rhodes, Ninja Detective, as an author.

Early life

Octavia Lenora Spencer was born in Montgomery, Alabama, and she has six siblings, including sisters Rosa and Areka Spencer. Dellsena Spencer (1945โ€“1988), her mother, served as a maid. When she was thirteen, her father died. In 1988, Spencer graduated from Jefferson Davis High School. She attended Auburn University in Montgomery, Alabama, and graduated from Auburn University, where she majored in English with a double minor in journalism and theater. Spencer has dyslexia.

Spencer appeared on The Long Walk Home, a film starring Whoopi Goldberg. Tate Taylor, her friend Tate Taylor, the future director of The Help In which Spencer will appear later, moved to Los Angeles in 1997.

Spencer made her film debut as a nurse in Joel Schumacher's A Time to Kill, based on John Grisham's book. She was originally hired to do casting, but Schumacher asked her if she'd audition for a role. Miss Congeniality 2, Never Been Kissed, Big Momma's House, Bad Santa, Spider-Man, Coach Carter, Win a Date With Tad Hamilton! And pretty Ugly People. She has appeared on television shows, including Raising the Bar, CSI: The Big Bang Theory, Wizards of Waverly Place, Grounded for Life, ER, Titus, Becker, 30 Rock, and Greg, as well as a regular appearance on the sitcom Mom. Serenity Johnson of Comedy Central's Halfway Home and Constance Grady, the amorous INS caseworker on Ugly Betty, are also known for her starring roles.

Spencer appeared in The Trials and Tribulations of a Trailer Trash Housewife, Del Shore's play, in 2003, opposite veteran actress Beth Grant.
