Octavia Lenora Spencer (born May 25, 1972) is an American actress, writer, and producer.
She has been given several awards, including an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award.
She is one of three black actresses to receive two consecutive Academy Award nominations in back-to-back years, and the first black actress to be nominated for an Academy Award in 1996's drama A Time to Kill.
She made her breakthrough in 2011 when she appeared in The Help in 1960s America, where she received several accolades, including the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Early life
Octavia Lenora Spencer was born in Montgomery, Alabama, and she has six siblings, including sisters Rosa and Areka Spencer. Dellsena Spencer (1945–1988), her mother, served as a maid. When she was thirteen, her father died. In 1988, Spencer graduated from Jefferson Davis High School. She attended Auburn University in Montgomery, Alabama, and graduated from Auburn University, where she majored in English with a double minor in journalism and theater. Spencer has dyslexia.

Career
Spencer appeared on The Long Walk Home, a film starring Whoopi Goldberg. Tate Taylor, her friend Tate Taylor, the future director of The Help In which Spencer will appear later, moved to Los Angeles in 1997.
Spencer made her film debut as a nurse in Joel Schumacher's A Time to Kill, based on John Grisham's book. She was originally hired to do casting, but Schumacher asked her if she'd audition for a role.
