Early life

Peet was born in New York City, the niece of Penny (née Levy), a social worker, and Charles Peet Jr., a corporate advocate who later divorced. Both her father is a Quaker and her mother is Jewish; both are also atheists. Samuel Levy, a New York businessman and public official, and P.I., a theatrical impresario and entrepreneur, were among Peet's maternal great-grandfathers.

Peet and her family migrated to London at the age of seven, and they returned to New York four years later. Peet attended Friends Seminary and graduated from Columbia University with a degree in American history. She auditioned for acting with instructor Uta Hagen and decided to become an actress after attending Hagen's class. Peet appeared in Clifford Odets' revival during her four-year tenure in Hagen. Stephen Lang co-stared Stephen Lang.

On September 30, 2006, Peet married screenwriter David Benioff, son of former Goldman Sachs CEO and chairman Stephen Friedman, in New York City. They have three children. The family lives in Manhattan and Beverly Hills.

Career

In the second episode of the Larry Sanders Show in 1992, Peet's first screen appearances were in a television commercial for Skittles and an uncredited appearance as the girlfriend of the titular character. She made her film debut in the drama Animal Room (1995), which also starred Neil Patrick Harris and Matthew Lillard. She appeared on Law and Order's November 1995 episode "Hot Pursuit." Peet continued to act in relatively obscure independent films starring more established actors for a large portion of the late 1990s. For instance, she appeared in One Fine Day, with George Clooney and Michelle Pfeiffer, and She's the One, with Jennifer Aniston and Cameron Diaz on September 26, 1996. Peet appeared in the critically acclaimed film Playing by Heart (1998) as part of an ensemble cast starring Sean Connery, Gillian Anderson, and Ryan Phillippe. Jacqueline Barrett appeared in the WB network series Jack & Jill, which aired for two seasons from 1999 to 2001, to moderate success. She appeared in Seinfeld's eighth-season finale ("The Summer of George") as a waitresses, which Jerry Seinfeld recognizes. Peet appeared in the fantasy romantic comedy Simply Irresistible, opposite Sarah Michelle Gellar, in 1999. Critics slammed the film and the box office flopped.

Peet appeared in Andrew Bergman's Isn't She Great (2000), a highly fictionalized account of author Jacqueline Susann's life and work. However, her first role in a widely distributed feature film came later this year, as Jill St. Claire appeared in the mafia comedy film The Whole Nine Yards. The film, which also starred Bruce Willis and Matthew Perry, received mixed feedback. Roger Ebert gave it one of the most encouraging critiques, noting in particular that Peet's appearance, which he described as "perfect," highlighted the tale. The Whole Nine Yards was a commercial success, grossing US$106.3 million worldwide. She received a Blockbuster Entertainment Award nomination for Favorite Supporting Actress: Comedy and a Teen Choice Award nomination for Choice Film Liar for her role. "Best New Style Maker" was named one of the World's Most Beautiful People in 2000, she spent a love interest in the independent comedy Whipped, and was named one of the World's Most Beautiful People in 2000 by People magazine.

In the comedy Saving Silverman (2001), Peet played both a psychologist and the romantic interest of Jason Biggs, and she portrayed a heroin-addicted trophy mistress, earning critical acclaim. She appeared in Changing Lanes, a hit, young Wall Street lawyer thriller film starring Ben Affleck. Ashley Judd's sister appeared in the suspense drama High Crimes, in which Judd and co-star Morgan Freeman face Judd's husband for murder. Peet appeared in the romantic comedy Something's Gotta Gives, directed by Nancy Meyers, in 2003. The film, which was a critical darling and a major success at the box office, earned more than US$125 million in North America. Peet played a Las Vegas prostitute in his second film release, Identity, directed by John Cusack, Ray Liotta, and John Hawkes. Identity received critical notice and was a modest commercial success. Peet appeared in The Whole Ten Yards, the sequel to The Whole Nine Yards, in 2004. This production was critically panned and failed at the box office, unlike the first film.

In the romantic comedy A Lot Like Love, which revolved around two people whose love gradually shifts from passion to marriage over the course of seven years, she had the most significant film role in 2005. Although overall reaction was mixed, the Los Angeles Times found Peet to be "charming and charismatic without being cloying or artificial." She appeared in the Woody Allen's tragicomedy Melinda and Melinda, which were loosely based on former Central Intelligence Agency agent Robert Baer's memoirs of being an agent in the Middle East, in 2005.

Peet appeared in the Broadway production Barefoot in the Park in 2006, followed by the romantic drama Griffin & Phoenix, a spin on the 1976 ABC television film in which she portrayed a terminally ill woman living life to the fullest. Studio 60, which premiered on NBC in late 2006, starred her as the newly hired president of entertainment programming, with Matthew Perry, who appeared in The Whole Nine Yards and The Whole Ten Yards, and Sarah Paulson, with whom she had previously worked in Jack & Jill. Peet was nominated for Best Actress – Television Series Drama by the Satellite Award for her role. Despite being a critical hit, the series was cancelled after one season.

In the romantic comedy The Ex (2007), Peet starred as an advocate who stays home to raise a new baby, which went unnoticed by critics and viewers. In 2008, she appeared on The X-Files: I Want to Believe (2008), as the girlfriend of a seemingly wealthy man, and the crime drama What Doesn't Kill You as the wife of a Boston criminal. What Doesn't Kill You was Brenda Schwarzbaum of Entertainment Weekly's best reviewed film of 2008. Peet "is amazing as Brian's sworn-down wife, sick of seeing her man disappear before her eyes."

Peet, Roland Emmerich's son, reunites with John Cusack in 2012 to play his estranged wife. Though critical reactions were divided, the film earned over US$769 million worldwide, becoming Peet's most well-known film. Catherine Keener and Rebecca Hall costarred in her forthcoming film, titled Please Give (2010). It received little theatrical success and critical acclaim. Peet's "best work here," according to Ethan Alter of Film Journal International. For Best Ensemble Cast, Peet and the others received a Gotham Award nomination. Peet developed one of the main characters of the DVD sci-fi film Quantum Quest: A Cassini Space Odyssey in 2010 and starred as the love interest of the main protagonist in Gulliver's Travels, starring Jack Black and Emily Blunt.

Peet, a recently divorced solicitor, made the television series Bent in 2012. "I thought it was a good repartee," she began to write. I adore a good romantic comedy, and I adore a repressed woman who needs to be housed." However, Bent was cancelled after only six episodes. Peet played Capt. Laura Hellinger appeared in seven episodes of The Good Wife's fourth season (2012–13). Blythe Danner and Sarah Jessica Parker, a playwright, made her debut on The Commons in Pensacola in 2013 as the wife of a man whose identity is stolen by a woman as the neighbor of a former child actor and one half of a married couple, with the well-deserved dramedy The Way, Way Back in 2013.

Peet appeared on HBO' Togetherness, which centered on two couples living under the same roof from 2015 to 2016. The show, which was produced, written, and directed by the Duplass brothers, ran for two seasons, and was praised for its intimate storytelling and its cast members. While Lynskey is "the true standout," Peet "would not be short of fans," IndieWire described it as "the upbeat comedy HBO needs right now." Peet appeared in Brockmire as the owner of a Minor League Baseball team from 2016 to 2020.

In 2021, Netflix launched The Chair, a six-episode comedic drama written by Peet and produced by her, as well as David Benioff and D. B. Weiss.
