Early life and work

Cameron Michelle Diaz was born in San Diego, California, on August 30, 1972, to Billie (née Early), an import/export agent, and Emilio Diaz, a California oil company Unocal's foreman. Chimene, Diaz's older sister, is a member of the Chimene family. Diaz's ancestors demigrated from Spain to Cuba, and her father's family is Cuban. They arrived in Ybor City, Florida, before relocating to Los Angeles, where her father was born. Her mother is of mainly English and German origins.

Diaz was born in Long Beach and attended Los Cerritos Elementary School and then Long Beach Polytechnic High School, where she was a schoolmate of Snoop Dogg. "I had amazing parents, they were amazing," she recalled back to her childhood as frugal. We weren't wealthy—quite much the opposite. Because $20 meant a lot to us, my family would collect [soda] cans to turn in for more money. But we were very happy."

Diaz signed a modeling contract with Elite Model Management at age 16, and appeared in Calvin Klein and Levi's advertisements when still attending high school. At the age of 17, she was featured on the front page of the Seventeen magazine in July 1990. Diaz has also worked in Australia for 2 to 3 months, as well as shooting a Coca-Cola commercial in Sydney in 1991.

By John Rutter, a professional photographer, she was photographed and filmtaped topless for a S&M leather fashion lingerie editorial in 1992, aged 19. They were never announced. Rutter approached Diaz in 2003, ahead of the unveiling of Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, promising to sell the images and video to her for $3.5 million before attempting to market them to potential buyers. Diaz briefly dated Matt Dillon, a co-star in There's Something About Mary. She began a relationship with actor Jared Leto, which ended in 2003. She dated musician Justin Timberlake from 2003 to 2007. Benji Madden, a Diaz married musician, was married at her Beverly Hills, California, on January 5, 2015, during a Jewish wedding. Nicole Richie, the former bride's close friend who is married to Madden's twin brother Joel Madden, had been married ten months earlier. The couple welcomed a daughter via survivate in December 2019.

She was a pioneer of the Toyota Prius hybrid era and campaigned for climate change in Al Gore's Live Earth campaign, raising the issue of climate change. Diaz was also critical of the George W. Diaz auditioned for The Mask as a 21-year-old jazz singer named Tina Carlyle, based on an agent for Elite who consulted with the film's producers when they were looking for the lead actress. She began acting lessons after being cast. The Mask was one of the top ten highest-grossing films of 1994, and Diaz was introduced as a sex symbol. Diaz played a role in The Last Supper (1995), one of a number of liberal graduate students who invited a group of militant conservatives to a dinner to murder them. Roger Ebert called the film "a brave attempt in a tense period, a Swiftian effort to slap us all in the face and force us to understand that our own liberties are largely dependent on those of our neighbors, our adversaries, and, yes, our adversaries." She appeared in the dramatic comedy Feeling Minnesota (1996), in which she co-starred Keanu Reeves, Vincent D'Onofrio, and Courtney Love, she had a leading role as an ex-stripper.
