Early life and work

Cameron Michelle Diaz was born in San Diego, California, on August 30, 1972, to Billie (née Early), an import/export agent, and Emilio Diaz, a California oil company Unocal's foreman. Chimene, Diaz's older sister, is a member of the Chimene family. Diaz's ancestors demigrated from Spain to Cuba, and her father's family is Cuban. They arrived in Ybor City, Florida, before relocating to Los Angeles, where her father was born. Her mother is of mainly English and German origins.

Diaz was born in Long Beach and attended Los Cerritos Elementary School and then Long Beach Polytechnic High School, where she was a schoolmate of Snoop Dogg. "I had amazing parents, they were amazing," she recalled back to her childhood as frugal. We weren't wealthy—quite much the opposite. Because $20 meant a lot to us, my family would collect [soda] cans to turn in for more money. But we were very happy."

Diaz signed a modeling contract with Elite Model Management at age 16, and appeared in Calvin Klein and Levi's advertisements when still attending high school. At the age of 17, she was featured on the front page of the Seventeen magazine in July 1990. Diaz has also worked in Australia for 2 to 3 months, as well as shooting a Coca-Cola commercial in Sydney in 1991.

By John Rutter, a professional photographer, she was photographed and filmtaped topless for a S&M leather fashion lingerie editorial in 1992, aged 19. They were never announced. Rutter approached Diaz in 2003, ahead of the unveiling of Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, promising to sell the images and video to her for $3.5 million before attempting to market them to potential buyers. He said he was giving her her first right of refusal to them; she saw it as attempted blackmail and sued him. On a Russian website, the 30-minute video of the photo shoot titled She's No Angel" was posted in July 2004. It was not announced by Rutter. Rutter was sentenced to more than three years in jail for attempted grand theft, forgery, and perjury on September 16, 2005.

Personal life

Diaz briefly dated Matt Dillon, a co-star in There's Something About Mary. She began a relationship with actor Jared Leto, which ended in 2003. She dated musician Justin Timberlake from 2003 to 2007. Benji Madden, a Diaz married musician, was married at her Beverly Hills, California, on January 5, 2015, during a Jewish wedding. Nicole Richie, the former bride's close friend who is married to Madden's twin brother Joel Madden, had been married ten months earlier. The couple welcomed a daughter via survivate in December 2019.

She was a pioneer of the Toyota Prius hybrid era and campaigned for climate change in Al Gore's Live Earth campaign, raising the issue of climate change. Diaz was also critical of the George W. Bush administration. "I won't vote for a son of a Bush," she wore on a T-shirt that read: "I will not vote for a son of a Bush." When doing press visits for Charlie's Angels, I was impressed. Diaz has been involved with the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), the first and largest non-profit group for veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and has served as an advocate for military families.

Cameron Diaz Career

Career

Diaz auditioned for The Mask as a 21-year-old jazz singer named Tina Carlyle, based on an agent for Elite who consulted with the film's producers when they were looking for the lead actress. She began acting lessons after being cast. The Mask was one of the top ten highest-grossing films of 1994, and Diaz was introduced as a sex symbol. Diaz dated video producer Carlos de la Torre during this time.

Diaz played a role in The Last Supper (1995), one of a number of liberal graduate students who invited a group of militant conservatives to a dinner to murder them. Roger Ebert called the film "a brave attempt in a tense period, a Swiftian effort to slap us all in the face and force us to understand that our own liberties are largely dependent on those of our neighbors, our adversaries, and, yes, our adversaries." She appeared in the dramatic comedy Feeling Minnesota (1996), in which she co-starred Keanu Reeves, Vincent D'Onofrio, and Courtney Love, she had a leading role as an ex-stripper. "Sadly, with the notable exception of the attractive Diaz, who is well-cast as the sexual assaulter and romantic manipulator, there are no good performances in the film," Emanuel Levy of Variety wrote: She's the One (1996), a crime-comedy in which she played an unfaithful wife implicated in her ex-lover's murder, was the same year as Jennifer Aniston's.

She had intended to appear in Mortal Kombat but had to resign after breaking her hand while preparing for the role. Diaz returned to mainstream in 1997 with the romantic comedy My Best Friend's Wedding, despite being cast in the little-seen A Life Less Ordinary. Julia Roberts starred opposite Julia Roberts in this film, portraying the wealthy fiancée of a sportswriter who is the long-time friend of Roberts' character. The film was a worldwide box-office hit and is regarded as one of the best romantic comedy films of all time.

Diaz starred in There's Something About Mary as the titular role of a woman living in Miami with many men vying for her affections.

It was remarked in The Austin Chronicle:

The sleeper hit was the highest-grossing comedy of 1998 in North America as well as the fourth-highest-grossing film of the year; it earned US$176 million in the United States and US$369 million worldwide. She was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in the category of Best Actress – Musical or Comedy. Diaz appeared in the critically acclaimed comedy Very Bad Things (1998).

Being John Malkovich (1999), Spike Jonze's debut stage appearance in Being John Malkovich (1999), depicting the pet-obsessed wife of an unemployed puppeteer who discovers himself in the mind of actor John Malkovich. The film gained brisk critical acclaim and was regarded as an arthouse hit. Janet Maslin of The New York Times said Diaz "does a comedic twist" in her "frumpy wife" role, and Roger Ebert said that the actress, "one of the best-looking women in films," has "promo" — "we hardly recognize her" here. [...] Diaz seems to have fun with her talent by bringing it incognito to strange places and making it work for a living." Diaz received Best Supporting Actress nominations at the Golden Globe, BAFTA, and SAG Awards, but she was turned down for the Oscar due to her role. Any Given Sunday (1999), Oliver Stone's sports drama in which veteran coach Tony D'Amato (Al Pacino) has fallen out of favor with her character Christina Pagniacci, the young woman in charge of the team, was the first film to be released in 1999. Although critical reactions were divided, the film made US$100 million worldwide.

Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu played the trio of investigators in Los Angeles in Charlie's Angels (2000). The film was one of the year's highest-grossing films, grossing US$264.1 million. Diaz appeared in The Invisible Circus, a Sundance-premiered independent drama, as a young woman who commits suicide in Europe in the 1970s, and next year, she appeared in Vanilla Sky as the former lover of a self-indulgent and vain publishing magnate (Tom Cruise). Following its unveiling, a huge public reaction and commercial success welcomed Vanilla Sky; Los Angeles Times called her "compelling as the embodiment of crazed sensuality" and The New York Times said she gives a "ferociously emotional" appearance. "Most impressive is Cameron Diaz, whose fatal-attraction stalker is both heartbreaking and terrifying," the San Francisco Chronicle said of the film. For her role in the film, she received nominations for Best Supporting Actress at the Golden Globe Awards, the Critics' Choice Awards, and the American Film Institute Awards.

She appeared in Princess Fiona in the animated film Shrek, 2001. Her character is marred by a curse that turns her into an ogress at every sunset. She is rescued by the title character, whom she later loves, after being trapped in a dragon-guarded castle for several years. The film was a big commercial success, grossing US$484.4 million worldwide and becoming the first movie to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Diaz wrote the romantic comedy The Sweetest Thing in 2002, portraying a single woman who is learning herself about wooing the opposite sex when she finally meets the man of her dreams. With a worldwide gross of US$68.6 million, the film was a moderate commercial success.

Diaz starred in Martin Scorsese's epic period drama Gangs of New York, set in the mid-century in New York City's Five Points district; she played both a pickpocket-grifter and Leonardo DiCaprio's love interest. Critics loved the film and it was a box office hit, grossing US$193 million globally. A. O. Scott of The New York Times, agreeing with other leading commentators on Daniel Day-Lewis' appearance in Diaz and DiCaprio, feels that the actress "ends up with no outlet for her spitfire energies because her appearance is more of a structural necessity — the point of male chaunism — than a fully imagined individual. The shortcomings of her role point to a more serious lapse, which is the film's lack of curiosity about what women's lives may have been like in Old New York." Diaz' character in Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (2003) and Shrek 2 (2004) resurrected her role.

After the National Enquirer published an article and photos titled "Cameron Caught Cheating" on their website in May 2005, Diaz received significant defamation credit from suing American Media Incorporated. Diaz cheating on her boyfriend at the time, Timberlake, with Shane Nickerson, the married MTV producer of her show Trippin'. The article and photos were taken off from the internet website following Diaz's complaint, but the hard copy did not include any of the text. Diaz, Timberlake, Nickerson, and his family's wife for the distress, which was untrue, according to the magazine, and the snapshot depicted nothing more than a goodbye hug between friends.

Diaz appeared in In Her Shoes (2005), a comedy-drama film based on Jennifer Weiner's book In Her Shoes (2005), a comedy-drama film that revolves around two sisters and their grandmothers, and she played opposite Toni Collette and Shirley MacLaine. Critics generally praised the film, and Diaz received acclaim for her performance of a dyslectic wild child in a love-hate contest with her older sister (Collette), with USA Today calling it "her best work" at the time. She appeared in In Her Shoes' romantic comedy The Holiday (2006), also starring Kate Winslet, Jude Law, and Jack Black, she followed In Her Shoes. Amanda, an American movie trailer maker who arranges a home exchange with a British woman (Winslet), appeared in it. The film was one of the year's biggest commercial successes, grossing more than US$205 million worldwide.

Shrek the Third, Diaz' only film of the year, was the third installment in the Shrek franchise, which also featured Timberlake in a supporting role. Despite mixed reviews from critics, the film still earned $798 million worldwide. In the same year, Diaz also appeared in Princess Fiona in a thirty-minute Christmas special directed by Gary Trousdale. Diaz's net worth increased by US$50 million over the year to June 2008, after her role in the Shrek sequel and her upcoming film What Happens in Vegas opposite Ashton Kutcher. Two strangers who awakened together to find they had gotten married after a night in which they won a major jackpot after playing the other's quarter. Critic reviews were generally critical, but the film nonetheless earned US$219 million with a budget of US$35 million.

She appeared in My Sister's Keeper and The Box in 2009, which was also a actress in My Sister's Keeper and The Box. My Sister's Keeper, based on Jodi Picoult's book of the same name, received mixed feedback in June 2009. Diaz plays a former prosecutor and mother of three children, one of whom is dying of leukemia. Its modest business success, it earned US$95 million worldwide, the bulk of which came from its domestic run. Diaz and James Marsden play a couple who receives a box from a mysterious man who promises them one million dollars if they press the button sealed inside the box, fearing that someone, somewhere, will die from it. Critical reaction to the psychological horror film was divided, and even though it had increased the budget back, it was considered a financial loss.

Forbes named Diaz as the richest female celebrity in 2010, ranked 60th in the richest 100 countries in 2010. Diaz reprised her voice in Shrek Forever After, the fourth installment in the Shrek series, in the same year. Despite mixed reviews from critics, the film went on to gross over $772 million around the world, becoming the fifth top-grossing film to be released that year. Princess Fiona was also on display in a thirty-minute Halloween special this year. In 2010, Diaz reunited with her Vanilla Sky co-star Tom Cruise in the action comedy film Knight and Day. Diaz plays a classic car restorer who is blindly met with the eccentric secret agent Roy Miller, played by Cruise, who is on the run from the Secret Service. The Knight and Day franchise received mixed reviews, and although the comedy debuted poorly at the box office in its first week, the film became a sleeper hit at the box office with a global gross of US$262 million. Diaz began dating former New York Yankees player Alex Rodriguez in May 2010. In September 2011, their friendship came to an end.

In Lenore Case, a journalist, in the remake of the 1940s film The Green Hornet, Diaz was cast as Lenore Case, a journalist. In the superhero action comedy film, directed by Michel Gondry, Diaz starred Seth Rogen, Jay Chou, and Christoph Waltz. The film ended its theatrical run on April 21, 2011 with a worldwide gross total of US$228 million, leading to mixed to critical feedback from critics who called it a "overblown, interminable, and unfunny update." She appeared in Jake Kasdan's adult comedy Bad Teacher the same year. Diaz plays an immoral, gold-digging Chicago middle school teacher who cries at her students, drinks heavily, and smokes marijuana. "In spite of a promising idea and a charmingly brazen display by Diaz, Bad Teacher is never as funny as it should be," critics who expressed dissatisfaction. However, the R-rated comedy, which also raised US$216 million worldwide, was a commercial success. Diaz was also listed among the Top Accomplished Women Entertainers on CEOWorld Magazine in 2011.

Diaz was cast in What to Expect When You're Expecting, directed by Kirk Jones and based on the same pregnancy guide. Jules Baxter, a contestant on a celebrity dance show and a host to a weight loss fitness competition, is pregnant with her dance partner's baby. Diaz, who filmed her scenes in a two-week period, portrays Jules Baxter, a contestant on a two-week stint and a host to a weight-loss fitness competition. The ensemble comedy received mostly critical feedback when it first premiered, but it later became a moderate commercial success with a worldwide gross of US$84.4 million. Gambit, Michael Hoffman's directorial debut and scripted by Joel and Ethan Coen, Diaz's other film this year, was Gambit, a remake of the 1966 film of the same name directed by Michael Hoffman and scripted by Joel and Ethan Coen. The film received largely critical feedback and performed poorly at the box office, grossing only US$10 million globally. Sigmund Freud was also portrayed in A Liar's Autobiography (2012), a British animated comedy film that is a (completely) inaccurate portrayal of Monty Python's derognus Graham Chapman's life.

Ridley Scott's The Counselor, co-starring Michael Fassbender, Javier Bardem, Penélope Cruz, and Brad Pitt, Diaz' only film project of 2013 was Diaz's Only Film Project of the Year. Diaz plays a pathological liar and a sociopath in the thriller about greed, death, primal instincts of humans and their consequences, an immigrant who is now living in a high-life after escaping a turbulent past as an exotic dancer. Although the film's reception was dissatisfied, her role was praised as one of her best in recent years.

The Other Woman, Diaz' first film of 2014, starred Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Leslie Mann, and Kate Upton. Although critics generally disagreed with the product's cheap laughs, it ultimately opened at the top of the US weekend box office with sales of US$83.9 million in North America and US$196.7 million globally.

Sex Tape, her next film release in 2014, starred Jason Segel as a married couple who woke up to discover that a sex tape they had made went missing, prompting a frantic hunt for its whereabouts. With a global gross of US$126 million, it eventually became a modest commercial success. Diaz had to perform multiple scenes of nudity in order to fulfill the role. Diaz said, "People have seen my butt" as a result of her decision to go nude. I've shown the top of my butt and the butt of my butt. As long as it's part of the story, I'm not opposed to doing nudity. "I'll do whatever has to be done if it's the right thing." Quvenzhané Wallis, Jamie Foxx, and Rose Byrne were among her year's film adaptations. Miss Colleen Hannigan, the cruelty control freak of the foster home where the titular character lives, was given the role. Annie made US$133 million on its first appearance in December, with Diaz' appearance gaining polarized reviews; observers praise her efforts, but critics complain "strident and obnoxious" as well as "strident and obnoxious." Rolling Stone's Peter Travers claims that she "overacts the role to the point of hysteria." Following Annie's release, Diaz decided to take a break from acting and announced her resignation in March.

The Body Book, Feed, Move, Describe, and Love Your Amazing Body, a health book co-written with Sandra Bark in late 2013. It wasn't that big of a difference. In March 2014, 2 were on the Best Seller list on The New York Times. In June 2016, she published The Longevity Book: The Science of Aging, the Biology of Strength, and The Privilege of Time. She has since invested in health and biotech startups, including Seed Health and Modern Acupuncture. EEEEEATSCON, the Infatuation's annual food festival, hosted in May 2019. Diaz launched Avaline, an organic wine brand, in 2020, with business partner Katherine Power.

She appeared as a guest judge in RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 7's season opener in 2022, and she said she was a huge fan of the series. "Any judges that have come on don't appear to be present," the contestant Trinity the Tuck said.

Diaz will return to acting in June 2022 as a guest on Netflix's action Back in Action.
