With the song "Why Me?" she is Europe's best known as the champion of the Eurovision Song Contest in 1992. "I live in Ireland as a member of the 1970s-1980s band Chips."
Early life and family
Martin, who was born in Belfast in 1952, is of Irish, Scottish, and Italian descent. The surname of her father's family was originally Martini. Francis Martini, her paternal grandfather, was born in Dublin to immigrants from Saronno, north of Milan, Italy. William Green and Elizabeth Nangle, two of Martin's maternal great-grandparents, had coal-mining experience; they had arrived in Belfast from Larkhall, Scotland, and were descended on the city.
Personal life
Martin was in a relationship with singer Paul Lyttle from the 1970s to the mid-1980s.
Career
Martin began her musical career in Omagh in 1969 when she joined the Chips. They quickly became one of Ireland's top bands, with hits including "Love Matters," "Twice a Week," and "Goodbye Goodbye" a week ago. Martin left Chips in 1972 to be a vocalist with the new group Lyttle People, but she and her former bandmates returned to work the following year.
The group appeared on Opportunity Knocks in 1974 and appeared on British television several times promoting their singles, but never gained a single victory in the United Kingdom. With numerous entries into the Eurovision Song Contest's Irish National Finals, the band lasted into the 1980s. They won the Castlebar Song Contest in 1982 with "David's Song," which Martin left after she won the Castlebar Song Contest with "Edge of the Universe" in 1983. From this point, she concentrated on a solo career as well as occasional live appearances with Chips until they recruited Valerie Roe, a young lead singer.
She participated in the National Song Contest four times as a member of Chips; however, they did not win; She appeared in the competition four times as a soloist and once more as part of the 'Linda Martin and Friends' group. With nine appearances, she has been the most popular entrant in the National Song Contest's history. She won the competition twice and went on to represent Ireland twice at the Eurovision Song Contest.
Johnny Logan's song "Terminal 3," which appeared under his real name Séan Sherrard, was the first of these victories. The song came in second place in the final after being defeated by eight points. "Terminal 3" is the most popular game on the internet. In the Irish charts, it ranks 7th. Her second victory was in 1992, when her song "Why Me" (also written by Logan) advanced to the final in Sweden. This was Ireland's fourth victory in the Eurovision Song Contest, and the album debuted at No. 96. The Irish chart tops the 1st place on the Irish chart, as well as being a hit in several European countries.
Martin was one of only three artists to finish first and second at Eurovision, behind Lys Assia and Gigliola Cinquetti. Since then, only Elisabeth Andreassen and Dima Bilan have achieved this, bringing the number to five. Martin was the first of the three artists to finish second first and first second, only seconds later by Bilan.
She has appeared on The Lyrics Board, one of the broadcaster's most popular formats, on RTÉ. On the first series of ITV's The X Factor, she appeared as one of Louis Walsh's behind-the-scenes crew.
In addition, she appeared as a judge on the first, second, and fourth seasons of RTÉ's You're a Star and on Charity You're a Star in summer 2005 and 2006. She was dropped from the 2007 season, but she maintained on Saturday Night with Miriam that she was "open" to being able to return to the program. Following Ireland's dismal results in the 2007 contest finishing last with only five points, Martin hasn't ruled out a return to Eurovision.
She appeared at Congratulations, the 50th anniversary Eurovision concert in Copenhagen, Denmark, in October 2005. Martin was also the Irish spokesperson for the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 and was one of the five judges for Eurosong 2009 (Irish Selection for Eurovision). Jedward, the mentor for Jedward in the Irish Eurovision final Eurosong 2012, was her mentor.
Petra Mede, the host of Eurovision 2013, gave a light-hearted glimpse of the competition, in which she told viewers that Johnny Logan had won the tournament three times before, in 1980, 1987, and 1992. "I recognize a drag queen when I see one," she said in a retro video in which she joked that she had won the third time disguised as a woman. The parody was mocked, particularly in Irish media. However, Martin claimed she had actually benefited from all the publicity on RTÉ's The Saturday Night Show on June 1, 2013. She appeared on Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" on the same program.
Martin has also appeared in pantomime in Dublin. At the Olympia Theatre, she appeared as the Wicked Stepmother, Snow White as the Evil Queen, and Robin Hood as herself in Cinderella.
Twink, an Irish entertainer, performed Menopause the Musical. During a tirade in May 2010, Twink described Martin as a "cunt." The two had been friends for 30 years, but they said afterward that there were no plans to talk to each other again.
