Josh McEachran Career

Club career

McEachran, a midfielder for Garden City in the Oxford Mail Boys League, was spotted by a Chelsea scout, who was playing football for the Chelsea Mail Boys League. At the age of seven, he joined the Blues' academy. He signed a two-year scholarship contract prior to the 2009-10 season and helped the Blues' youth team win the FA Youth Cup for the first time in 50 years. The youth team's efforts culminated in Chelsea winning Chelsea's Young Player of the Year award. He also played for the reserve team and made nine Premier Reserve League appearances. McEachran played in ten Premier Reserve League appearances from 2010–11 seasons, leading the team to first place in the Premier Reserve League South, although he did not appear in the knockout stage, which Chelsea won, to win the league outright. During the 2011-2012 and 2013-2014 seasons, he made occasional appearances for the reserves.

McEachran was the first person to the first team during the 2009–2010 season when he traveled with the squad to a League Cup fifth round match against Blackburn Rovers in December 2009 and trained with the first team during the first half of 2010. McEachran was selected as a replacement for Chelsea's Champions League squad for the 2010–11 season, receiving his first call when he was announced as a replacement for a group stage match against MK ilina on September 15, 2010. After 79 minutes of the 4–1 victory, he made his senior debut and replaced Yossi Benayoun. He became the first player to be born after the Champions League began on November 25th, 1992, and the Champions League was the first player to participate in the tournament. McEachran made his Premier League debut in a 1–0 loss to Manchester City on September 25, despite Ramires' replacement after 81 minutes. He made his Chelsea debut in the return Champions League match against ilina on November 23rd and started the Blues' dead rubber group stage match against Marseille on December 8th, marking his first 90 minutes for the club. With boss Carlo Ancelotti's desire to use him in a deep midfield role, he made 17 appearances in his debut season. On May 19, 2011, McEachran was named Chelsea Young Player of the Year in honor of his appearances. Pundits viewed McEachran's regular inclusion in the squad as a hint that the Chelsea administration was aware of the importance of younger players in a younger squad that was otherwise unbalanced.

In the friendly 2011 Premier League Asia Trophy final versus Aston Villa, McEachran signed a new five-year deal and scored his first senior goal for the club against Aston Villa two weeks later. McEachran made just five appearances in the 2011-12 season, and new boss André Villas-Boas frozen him out. He spent the majority of his Chelsea career away on loan and was not accepted into a squad until departed from Stamford Bridge on July 10. During five seasons as a senior player at Chelsea, McEachran made 22 appearances and scored no goals.

McEachran completed a loan transfer to Swansea City, the Premier League newcomers, on January 17, 2012, until the 2011–12 season. Brendan Rodgers, his former Chelsea youth and reserve team boss, was reunited with him after the transfer. On January 21-0 loss to Sunderland, he made his debut in a 2–0 loss and came off the bench in the 66th minute for Gylfi Sigursson. McEachran made his first appearance for the Swans in a FA Cup fourth round match against Bolton Wanderers, losing by a full 90 minutes. He ended his tenure with just five appearances after returning to the bench. McEachran said that the move was "one of those things in life that just didn't work out" and that he learned "nothing" during his time in January 2013.

McEachran joined Middlesbrough on loan for the entire 2012-13 season from August 20th. He made his Middlesbrough debut on the next day, winning by a full 90 minutes over Burnley. He became a regular for Boro, establishing a good midfield partnership with Grant Leadbitter and also playing on the left of midfield, but an ankle injury while overseas service delayed his progress in the second half of the season. During a season in which Middlesbrough challenged for a playoff spot, he made 38 appearances, but he fell far outside of contention. McEachran was named Young Player of the Year by Boro supporters.

McEachran joined Watford on loan from September 20th until January 2, 2014, with the ability to extend the loan until the end of the 2013–14 season. His debut came four days later in the League Cup third round against Norwich City, but he was forced to Connor Smith on 38 minutes after suffering a back spasm. McEachran made only eight appearances for Watford before returning to Stamford Bridge after his initial loan was terminated.

McEachran signed with Wigan Athletic on loan until the 2013–14 season on January 23. McEachran was "not at his best," according to the Manchester Evening News, so we should ensure he recovers form, recovers energy, and is able to perform at a high rate in the modern game of football. McEachran began his playing days with regular substitute appearances, and after recovering his health, he made a big leap into the starting lineup, making seven starts from late February to the end of the season. He began playing in the Latics' FA Cup quarter-final and semi-final matches versus Manchester City and Arsenal, respectively, but his first appearance in the latter match ended due to a shootout defeat. He was left out of the squad for both legs of the semi-finals against Queens Park Rangers after a fifth-place finish in the Championship saw the Latics qualify for the playoffs. McEachran's tenure came to an end with 11 appearances.

McEachran had joined Dutch Emigration firm Vitesse Arnhem on loan until the end of the 2014-15 season, according to the company's announcement on August 17th. During a 2–1 loss to PEC Zwolle one week later, McEachran made his debut, appearing off the bench in Marko Vejinovi's 74th minute. McEachran made sporadic appearances and spent time in the reserves before breaking into the starting lineup in April 2015. Marko Vejinovia and Davy Pröpper took their first positions in midfield and McEachran made eight appearances from start to end of the season. Four of those starts came in the Economies European competition playoffs, with McEachran assisting Vitesse in getting past PEC Zwolle and Heerenveen to qualify for a spot in the 2015–16 UEFA Europa League third qualifying round. He made his final appearance in 21 appearances.

McEachran agreed to Brentford's four-year deal for an undisclosed fee, worth £750,000. After suffering a fractured foot in a crash while training with Toumani Diagouraga, McEachran will be out for three months, it was announced on July 25. On December 15, he made his first appearance as a replacement against Cardiff City on December 15th and got off to a 2-0 win over Reading two weeks later. McEachran was an all-present starter and made 15 more appearances before his season was ended due to a re-fracture of his foot during a training session on March 24, 2016. He was full of energy in the 2016–17 season, but injuries and fitness limitations prevented him from retaining a starting position until the regular season began. McEachran had broken into the starting lineup and was returning to action since joining the club in January, but the club's season was lost after suffering an ankle ligament injury during a 2–1 victory over Sheffield on February 21.

McEachran was able to return to action for the 2017-18 season, but he made just four appearances early in the season before suffering a leg injury during a 2–2 draw with Bristol City on August 15. He returned to match play a month later and alternated between a starting and a replacement role until the season's end, which he achieved with 28 appearances. McEachran began his 2019-20 season as an all-present starter in league games, scoring his first professional goal of his career in a 1–1 draw with Birmingham City on October 2nd. After returning from injury early in December after 28 appearances during the season, he rejoined the team entirely in early April 2019. In June 2019, McEachran resigned from a new deal and left Griffin Park. He made 102 appearances and one goal during his Brentford career.

McEachran joined Birmingham City on a free transfer on September 27, 2019. He made his debut in the Championship match against Blackburn Rovers, which Birmingham defeated 1–0 on Sunday after spending several weeks regaining match fitness. He made nine appearances in total, including six starts over the next three months, but his seventh appearance of his seventh debut came on February 4, 2020. The knee had to be cut and recovered in November, and he was back to fitness. He was one of three midfielders cut from the club's overcrowded first-team squad in January 2021 and left the club by mutual agreement on January 31.

McEachran signed a short-term deal with Milton Keynes Dons on March 1, 2021, shortly after starting to work for the club, primarily for fitness. McEachran signed a new contract with the club for the 2021–22 season on July 29, 2021–22 season, and his deal came to an end on June 17, 2022, marking his third season with the club.

International career

McEachran made his England U16 team debut at the age of 14, getting off to a 2–2 draw with Northern Ireland on October 11, 2007. He went on to serve as the team's captain in the 2008 tournament, but he missed the final two games due to injury. He earned five caps for the team, with the most notable coming in a 3–1 victory over Russia in the 2009 Montaigu Tournament's first match.

McEachran was the first member of the U17 Championship elite qualification match against Hungary on March 30, 2009, and he led England to a 2–0 victory, which saw England qualify for the finals. McEachran, who did not qualify for the tournament finals, was a regular in qualifying for the 2010 European U17 Championships and was selected in the squad for the finals in Liechtenstein after failing to qualify for the tournament finals. He scored in the first group match against the Czech Republic, helped the team advance to the final and won his 12th and final cap in the final showdown with Spain, which England came from behind to victory 2–1. McEachran was selected in the Tournament's Technical Team.

McEachran made his debut for the England under-19 team in a 2–0 friendly victory over Slovakia on September 2, 2010, fresh off his success in the 2010 European U17 Championships. In the following match, a 6–1 win over Albania in their first European U19 Championship qualifier, he scored his first goal for the team. He earned four more caps before his U19 career was cut short by England's inability to qualify for the tournament finals.

McEachran was named in England's under-20 squad for the 2014 Toulon Tournament and made two appearances as England finished in fourth place.

McEachran earned his first cap for the England under-21 team in a 2–0 friendly loss to Germany on November 16, 2010, when he came on as a replacement for Nathan Delfouneso. On October 6, 2011, he made his first competitive appearance for the team in England's inaugural 2013 European U21 Championship qualifier against Iceland, removing Martyn Waghorn after 63 minutes, who had in turn replaced Delfouneso during the first half. He was a regular in the team during the qualification period and scored his first U21 goal with a penalty in a 4–0 friendly over Austria on March 25, 2013. McEachran was a member of the 2013 European Under-21 Championships team and made two appearances before England was disqualified in the group competition.

England boss Fabio Capello was monitoring McEachran's progress in August 2011. McEachran is also eligible to represent Scotland because his maternal grandfather is Scottish. He did not appear to be trying to revert his footballing allegiance when the Scottish Football Association approached him in February 2012. He was on the 80-man shortlist for the Great Britain's football team to compete in the 2012 Olympic Games, but was not selected in the final squad.
