Early life
Mawle was born in Oxford, England. He grew up on a farm outside of Shipston-on-Stour, Warwickshire, and spent time on a farm. He is one of three children from a family with a history of nine generations of farming in Warwickshire. His mother was a teacher. Richard Hamilton, his father, still farms the property.
He attended the Croft prep school on the outskirts of Stratford-upon-Avon, where he was identified as severely dyslexic; consequently, he went from the ages of 13 to a boarding school for special needs. Mawle left school at 16 to become an actor, but contracted labyrinthitis, leaving him 70% hearing impaired and with tinnitus. While doing a variety of jobs, such as fitness instructor and dishwasher, he begged the principal of the local college in Stratford-upon-Avon to let him enroll in a BTEC in performing arts. He appeared in both the Box Clever Theatre Company and in his own production of Solo Hamlet. He received a scholarship to study at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.
Career
Mawle graduated from Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in 2002, the same year he appeared in the Irish Hurling TV advertisements for Guinness. He left as an assistant in a special needs school in 2002 with no agent and spent as an assistant. He played Troilus for Shakespeare at the Tobacco factory in 2003 and in Manchester's production of Antony and Cleopatra in 2005.
It was his appearance in the television film Soundproof (2006), wherein a deaf actor was required for the lead role, that made his biggest impact. Mawle was nominated for the RTS Breakthrough on Screen Award, and director Ed Coulthard was named for the BAFTA award for best director in 2007.
In the role of Tim, Mawle has appeared in a number of subsequent British television shows, including Dunkirk, winner of the Huw Wheldon BAFTA Award for Factual Drama, Adrian Shergold's Persuasion (2007) and Channel 4's gay drama Clapham Junction. "Mawle and Treadaway put in Bafta-winning efforts," Time Out said. In 2008, Mawle appeared in the BBC/HBO Films miniseries "The Passion" and as a guest star in the Foyle's War "Broken Souls" episode.
In 2008, Mawle returned to the theatre in The Last Days of Judas Iscariot, directed by Rupert Goold. He was voted for Outstanding Newcomer by the Evening Standard Theatre Awards and also for his appearance as Judas and he was nominated for WhatsOnStage Theatre Choice Awards for Best Newcomer.
Mawle appeared in several films in 2009: James Marsh's Nineteen Eighty (part of the Red Riding Trilogy), Philip Ridley's Heartless, and Dominic Savage's Freefall opposite Dominic Cooper and Aidan Gillen were among the few films to feature. He appeared in episode 4 of Jimmy McGovern's The Street earlier this year.
Mawle appeared in artist David Austen's End of Love and also in the short film Sometimes the Moon Is Velvet, which toured festivals, in 2010. Sally Hawkins appeared in Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express, Dominic Savage's Dive, and Made in Dagenham. In the BBC Four television adaptation of Women in Love, Gerald Crich appeared alongside Rosamund Pike as Crich's lover Gudrun Brangwen.
He appeared in The Horrible Crowes' debut single "Behold the Hurricane" and appeared on HBO's Game of Thrones as Benjen Stark in 2011. Mawle appeared in the pilot episode and then reprised his role in Season 6.
In 2012, Mawle appeared in various projects, including Sebastian Faulks' acclaimed book Birdsong, Bruce Willis' The Cold Light of Day, Tim Burton-produced film Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and independent British film Shell.
Stephen Beaumont appeared in The Tunnel in 2013 and Detective Inspector Jedediah Shine on Ripper Street, respectively. In the horror film The Hallow, Mawle appeared as the lead.
