Johannes Eckerstrom Life

Avatar, a Swedish heavy metal band, formed in Gothenburg in 2001.

The band has released seven studio albums, the most notable being Avatar Country in 2018.

The band has had some success on US rock radio as well, particularly with their song "New Land," which peaked at number 20 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart in May 2017.

Formation and early releases (2001−2010)

The band was formed in 2001 by drummer John Alfredsson and guitarist Jonas Jarlsby, who were in separate bands at the time. In 2004, the band performed two four-song EP demos: Personal Observations released on January 18, 2004 and 4 Reasons to Die on November 19, 2004. Thoughts of No Tomorrow, Avatar's first studio album, debuted on January 25, 2006, and ranked at #47 on the Sweden Albums Top 60. The band appeared on several European tours as a supporting act for Impaled Nazarene, Evergrey, and In Flames.

Schlacht, Avatar's second album, debuted on October 24, 2007 and landed at number 27 on the Swedish album chart. On the track "Letters from Neverend," Björn Gelotte of In Flames performed a guitar solo. They appeared at the 2008 Sweden Rock Festival as well as shows in favor of Obituary (January–February 2008), and Hardcore Superstar (October–November 2009).

The band's third album, titled Avatar, was released in Sweden in November 2009 and landed at number 36th on the national album charts. On the band's website in January 2010, the music video for the song "Queen of Blades" was posted. The band signed with Sony Music for the German and Swiss releases of their new album on March 26, 2010. A deal was signed by the Japanese label Art Union in April for a 19 May launch of the album. They soon began a new touring schedule, with Warrior Soul (March-April 2010), Dark Tranquillity (October–November 2010), and Helloween (December 2010–January 2011).

Simon Andersson left the band in December 2011, after being replaced by Tim hrström. In Europe, Black Waltz' album Black Waltz was announced on January 25, 2012. In Avatar's home country, it ranked at number 25 on the album chart. On February 14, the album was released in the United States. Black Waltz is the first time Eckerström uses the "Clown" face paint, which is now in use on a daily basis. Avatar began to travel in the United States in support of Black Waltz's American debut, as well as Lacuna Coil and Sevendust's debut in February 2013.

Avatar was chosen by Avenged Sevenfold in August 2013 after Device and Disturbed vocalist David Draiman's wife gave birth to a child and Draiman decided to withdraw from his tour schedule, and they and Five Finger Death Punch proceed to tour together. The band spent a month in Thailand recording for a new album, which was scheduled for release in March 2014. Avatar's fifth album, Hail the Apocalypse, was announced on March 11, 2014 by eOne Music, and it would be released on May 13th, 2014. The album's first single, the title track, was released on March 17, 2014, as well as a video. Tobias Lindell and Jay Ruston mixed the new album. Avatar has appeared on several tours of the United States and Europe, as well as performing at festivals such as Rock on the Range 2014 and the inaugural Louder Than Life, since the introduction of Hail the Apocalypse. 'Vultures Fly''s music video premiered on January 26, 2015 and earned distinction by being voted #1 for five weeks in a row in Loudwire's Battle Royal video countdown, as well as their 2015 Best Rock Video. In April 2015, Avatar began a US tour, with headline performances and support for Five Finger Death Punch and Mushroomhead.

Avatar would be included in the Shiprocket 2016 line on May 6, 2015, according to the company's website on May 6, 2015. In August–September 2015 with Gemini Syndrome and First Declinee, Avatar's second headline tour in the United States, and in January–February 2016, with September Mourning before returning to Sweden to complete writing on the sequel to Hail The Apocalypse. Sylvia Massy was announced as the album's producer, and it was then recorded in three studios around Europe. Avatar will appear at numerous festivals in 2016, including Rock on the Range and the Carolina Rebellion, until the end of 2015.

Avatar began recording a then unidentified sequel to several tours promoting 2014's Hail the Apocalypse. The band split time between three European studios — Castle Studios in Rohrsdorf, Germany; Finnvox Studios in Helsinki, Finland; and Spinroad Studios in Lindome, Sweden. Sylvia Massy, a celebrated producer known for her performances with Tool and Red Hot Chili Peppers, praised Avatar as "relentless," quoting singer Johannes Eckerström as having "unique energy and charisma." The start of recording sessions also coincided with numerous news on the band's Instagram page, chronicling their time in the studio. Avatar was born in Shiprocket, 2016. After completing recording, he toured the southern United States with September Mourning and Saint Diablo. Avatar performed "For The Swarm" in Dallas, Texas, on January 30, 2016, the first original song since the release of their previous album.

Avatar's official website and social media revealed the name of the new album, Feathers & Flesh, on March 3rd. A date of 13 May 2016 was confirmed as well as several pre-ordering merchandise bundles that will be available to order on 17 March 2016. One bundle includes a 60-page, 109-verse poem hardcover book, described on the band's Facebook as "a tale too long for a booklet." "For The Swarm" was the first single to be released on iTunes as a reward for those who had pre-ordered the album. This single's music video was also released. The new song and video were well received by fans, as shown by For The Swarm's victory in Loudwire's Battle Royale for the week ending 11 March 2016. Feathers & Flesh's singles, "Regt" and "House of Eternal Hunt" were released on March 17th, 2016 to help with the pre-ordering of merchandise bundles. A video directed by Johan Carlén was released with the two songs playing sequentially as the view pans around a dimened art gallery, with several paintings of birds, mainly owls, resembling some of the band's works for the individual songs on their album. The band's "Register," the album's opener, is described as "an epic journey through epicness" and, "by far the most different album-intro we've ever written." The Owl, the album's protagonist, is introduced as she lays dying, reflecting on her experience. According to Eckerström, "the source of Eternal Hunt" begins with the band's description of metal, with The Owl, a "predator ruling the skies." "The Eagle Has Landed," the first official single, was released on March 25, 2016. This track was a prompt gratification reward for pre-ordering Feathers & Flesh, as with the previous singles. According to Eckerström, The Eagle "crashing into the world of his enemies." This track no new music video was released, though the band did post the song on its official YouTube channel with the same video featured for "Regulation" and "House of Eternal Hunt".

At the Metal Hammer Golden Gods on June 12, 2017, Avatar was given the Breakthrough Band Award.

Avatar released "A Statue of the King" on October 24th, along with the announcement that they would debut their seventh album, Avatar Country, on December 12th, 2018. The dates of the new Avatar tour, dubbed "Avatar Country Tour," also revealed in North America, and then Europe in March of the same year. The song "The King Wants You" was released on SiriusXM Octane radio and soon on digital platforms, becoming the second single from the album "Avatar Country." On December 19, the official music video was released.

Avatar Country was launched globally on January 12, 2018, both on streaming platforms like Spotify and in physical bookstores around the world. The band's Legend of Avatar Country campaign, which has been described as "a film featurette based on the band's album Avatar Country," the band announced on October 29th. The band needed to raise money for the film by October 31, 2018, and the group has over $110,000 raised for the film as of October 31.

Avatar announced in early December 2019 that they had begun recording their next album at Sphere Studios in Los Angeles. Corey Taylor, a Slipknot and Stone Sour frontman, appeared in a Loudwire interview in January and later revealed that the band's paywalled video revealed that Corey Taylor, a Slipknot and Stone Sour frontman, appeared in the song "Secret Door." The names of a few other tracks on the yet unidentified album, including "Colossus," "Scream Into The Void," and "Silence In The Age Of Apes," were also revealed during the same interview. Eckerström described the album's tone to Loudwire. "Avatar Country, we wanted to see if we could do comedy," Eckerström said of the album. It was funny and we wanted to see if we could make something funny... Well, it was amusing for us, but it reminds us that doing something devoid of humor is vital, because there is no joking around and it brings us right back to reality. It explores more with shadow, sadness, detachment, alienation, and the general trembling of thinking of the world at large. The band revealed the end of the "Avatar Country" period in a YouTube video and a tweet on May 1, 2020, hinting at the forthcoming album with the caption "Will you hunt with us?" "We love you."

Through another video on May 5, 2020, the name "Hunter Gatherer" and the release date of 7 August 2020 had been confirmed.

On May 14, 2020, the music video for "Silence in the Age of Apes" was released and was immediately available on streaming platforms the following day.

On August 31 and September 1, 2021, respectively, two singles titled "Going Hunting" and "Barren Cloth Mother" were released, ahead of the band's Going Hunting tour. The band also announced their break with their record label eOne and the establishment of their own brand, Black Waltz Records.

Loudwire selected "Going Hunting" as the 34th best metal song of 2021.

Avatar is currently working on new material for their ninth studio album, which is set to be released in June 2022.
