Joe Cheng Career

Acting career

Cheng began his career in the entertainment industry with the Catwalk Modelling Agency. According to reports, he was a model within one year of signing. Cheng is based in Taiwan and has listed China, Hong Kong, and Japan as his top target markets.

Cheng appeared in many music videos, including one of Heavenly King Jacky Cheung's. He played his second male lead in The Rose, a Taiwanese drama serial that also starred Taiwanese girl band S.H.E and well-known actress Cecilia Yip. It was in this role that he began to act. Cheng was asked to appear in the first-ever idol drama in Taiwanese boyband Energy's first-ever idol drama, Dance with Michael, in the same year. Cheng starred in two dramas, Nine-ball and Magic Ring, in 2004. Although these two serials had a lukewarm success, Cheng took the lead role in It Started with a Kiss in the following year. This serial attracted high ratings in Taiwan and was extremely popular with Asian audiences. As a result, Cheng's fame has increased dramatically. It was also Cheng's first meeting with actress Ariel Lin. The two couples, who are often described as one of Taiwan's most compatible on-screen couples, teamed up again in the 2007 sequel to It Started, They Kiss Again, as well as Love or Bread (2008), which is unrelated to the Kiss series. Cheng has appeared in numerous drama serials produced in Taiwan, China, and Japan, but he is best known for his appearances in The Rose and the Kiss series.

Cheng has modeled for a variety of well-known brands, including Puma AG (2003–2005) and adidas (2006–present). He has appeared in several runway shows for companies including Marc Jacob's (2003), Timberland, Levi's, and Christian Dior (2007). He has appeared at flagship store openings as well as Hugo Boss (2009). Cheng also endorses several food, jewellery, and clothing brands, the most notable being Chinese green tea brand Kang Shifu (for which Cheng appeared and recorded a song with Mike He and Taiwanese actor Joe Cheng) as well as casual wear brand N+a (with Taiwanese singer-actress Cyndi Wang). He has also served as a spokesperson for Shiatzy Chen.

Cheng, the exception of drama serial memorabilia, has published three pictorial books in lieu of four calendars and one mini pictorial in connection with the launching of his EP in 2009. He has also written two books and co-authored another on Taichung, Taiwan. He was also included in a 2006 book by the Catwalk Modelling Agency. Cheng has been nominated for both as a model and as a performing artist. One of the most notable of the Asia Model Festival Awards 2009 included one at which he received the Asia Special Award. Cheng was named as an ambassador for World Vision in December 2009 by Cheng, Sylvia Chang, and Mike Heng.

Music career

Under the direction of Hong Kong stage director Edward Lam, 2009 was a quiet year for the television actor, who spent the year in a whizzing debut, Design for Life, starring stage veterans Sylvia Chang and David Wang. Several sell-out shows were held in Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, and Singapore. Cheng said that it has always been one of his dreams to appear in a stage play and that he was honoured to be able to appear in the same production as Sylvia Chang. Sing a Song, his first EP, was released in the same year. Cheng is regarded by his colleagues in the industry as someone who loves to sing. Although album sales were fair and EP topped certain charts in Taiwan, Cheng was unable to persuade music critics that the product was not well known. Cheng did not appear in any drama series in 2009, much to his dismay of his followers.

Cheng is completing his part-time university studies in tourism administration at Hsing Wu College, in addition to his acting career. Cheng is expected to enlist as soon as he completes his training as all males in Taiwan must enlist for National Service. Cheng appeared in Taiwan at the 7th Asia Song Festival, organized by the Korea Foundation for International Culture Exchange (KFIE), at the Seoul Olympic Stadium in 2010.
