Jimi Manuwa Career

Mixed martial arts career

Following a weight lifting injury in which he ruptured a chest muscle, Manuwa began training in mixed martial arts in 2007. With Alan Keddle and Dino Miringou, he currently trains at Keddles Gym and Nova Força BJJ with Ricardo da Silva.

Manuwa's first fight for UCMMA was his third in his career, making him the promotion's champion in his third battle under them. He defended his title five times, more than any other champion in the company, past or present.

During this time, Manuwa turned down a contract offer from the Ultimate Fighting Championship, claiming that it wasn't the right time in his career to accept it. He did state that reaching the UFC was his "absolute goal" in the future. He was then invited to compete in the UFC 138 tournament but later pulled out that he hadn't been competing since the summer of 2010 and that "if he fought on the October card it would have resulted in a fifteen-month layoff," he said. To stay sharp, you'll have to fight often."

For the fifth time at UCMMA 24: Hands of War, he defended his title against Nick Chapman.

Manuwa has signed a four-fight exclusive deal with BAMMA after defending his title for the fifth time. He made his BAMMA 8 debut. He faced Frenchman Antony Rea and won the match via TKO.

Manuwa joined the promotion in July 2012 after turning down a UFC contract a few years earlier.

Manuwa made his UFC debut against TUF 8 contestant Kyle Kingsbury at UFC On Fuel TV 5, winning after 2 rounds by TKO due to doctor stoppage. After Kingsbury's left eye had swollen shut, the stoppage was announced.

Manuwa defeated Cyrille Diabaté at UFC on Fuel TV on February 16, 2013: Baro vs. McDonald, in his second fight with the promotion. Manuwa was crowned the champion (TKO) after Diabaté was unable to recover after tearing a calf muscle near the end of the first round.

On October 26, 2013, Manuwa would face Ryan Jimmo at UFC Fight Night 30. Manuwa's opponent injured his leg during the fight for the second time in a row, resulting in a TKO victory for Manuwa.

On March 8, 2014, Manuwa faced Alexander Gustafsson at UFC Fight Night 37. In the second round, he lost the fight by TKO. Both fighters were given a Fight of the Night bonus for the fight.

Manuwa was supposed to face Mauro Rua at UFC Fight Night 56 in Brazil on November 8, 2014. Manuwa had pulled out of the fight due to an injury, but Ovince St. Preux would replace him against Rua on October 29.

On September 5, 2015, Manuwa met Anthony Johnson at UFC 191. He lost the match by being knocked out early in the second round.

On February 27, 2016, Manuwa was briefly linked to a match against Nikita Krylov at UFC Fight Night 84. However, Manuwa was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to an undisclosed injury in late December, causing the match to be called off.

Manuwa met Ovince Saint Preux on October 8, 2016 at UFC 204. He won the game by a knockout in the second round and was given a Performance of the Night award.

At UFC 208, Manuwa was briefly linked to a match with Glover Teixeira. However, the team was scrapped and Manuwa eventually met Corey Anderson in the main event at UFC Fight Night 107 on March 18, 2017. Manuwa defeated Anderson in the first round by a jab and then finishing him with a single left hook. He was given a certificate of Achievement of the Night.

In a rematch at UFC Fight Night 127 on March 17, Manuwa defeated Jan Bachachowicz. He lost the contest on unanimous vote. Both participants were given the Fight of the Night award for their efforts.

On September 22, 2018, Manuwa was supposed to face Glover Teixeira at UFC Fight Night 137. However, Glover Teixeira called off the match after suffering from a carpalgation. Thiago Santos had him replaced. Manuwa was suspended from the fight during the week leading up to the tournament due to a torn hamstring injury and replaced by Eryk Anders.

On December 8, 2018, Manuwa took on Thiago Santos, the former champion of the United Nations Fiesty. In round two, he lost the contest due to a knockout.
