Early life
Manuwa was born in California and remained there until three years old when his father redirected the family to Nigeria. At ten, he migrated to London, England. He got in trouble as a youth and didn't finish high school. After being found guilty of plotting to burgle, he was sent to jail in 2002 and was released in 2003.
Personal life
Manuwa's parents are Nigerian, however, he was born in California and spent his early years in Nigeria before settling in London at the age of 10. MTV UK produced a documentary on MMA in the United Kingdom, starring Manuwa, Jack Marshman, and Cory Tait, who were filming in the build-ups of their fights and lifestyles involved.
Manuwa's tattoos were displayed in PETA's anti-fur "Ink Not Mink" ad campaign in 2014. In 2002, Jimi was jailed for his participation in a robbery ring. He was first released in 2003.
Mixed martial arts career
Following a weight lifting injury in which he ruptured a chest muscle, Manuwa began training in mixed martial arts in 2007. With Alan Keddle and Dino Miringou, he currently trains at Keddles Gym and Nova Força BJJ with Ricardo da Silva.
Manuwa's first fight for UCMMA was his third in his career, making him the promotion's champion in his third battle under them. He defended his title five times, more than any other champion in the company, past or present.
During this time, Manuwa turned down a contract offer from the Ultimate Fighting Championship, claiming that it wasn't the right time in his career to accept it. He did state that reaching the UFC was his "absolute goal" in the future. He was then invited to compete in the UFC 138 tournament but later pulled out that he hadn't been competing since the summer of 2010 and that "if he fought on the October card it would have resulted in a fifteen-month layoff," he said. On March 8, 2014, Manuwa faced Alexander Gustafsson at UFC Fight Night 37. In the second round, he lost the fight by TKO. Both fighters were given a Fight of the Night bonus for the fight.
Manuwa was supposed to face Mauro Rua at UFC Fight Night 56 in Brazil on November 8, 2014. Manuwa had pulled out of the fight due to an injury, but Ovince St. Preux would replace him against Rua on October 29.
Manuwa returned from the sport after over a year away from the sport, against Jan Bachachowicz on April 11, 2015 at UFC Fight Night 64. Manuwa won the fight by unanimous decision, putting him up for the first and only time in his MMA career.
On September 5, 2015, Manuwa met Anthony Johnson at UFC 191. He lost the match by being knocked out early in the second round.
On February 27, 2016, Manuwa was briefly linked to a match against Nikita Krylov at UFC Fight Night 84. However, Manuwa was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to an undisclosed injury in late December, causing the match to be called off.

On September 22, 2018, Manuwa was supposed to face Glover Teixeira at UFC Fight Night 137. However, Glover Teixeira called off the match after suffering from a carpalgation.
