Education
Filipovic, a native of Seattle, attended Shorewood High School. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism and politics, as well as a minor in gender and sexuality studies from New York University. She earned a Juris Doctor from New York University School of Law in 2008.
Personal life
Filipovic is of Serbian and German descent through her father's side of the family. Ty Lohrer McCormick was married in 2018 and has been married again.
Career
In April 2014, Cosmopolitan recruited Filipovic to write for the Cosmopolitan.com website. She was a columnist for The Guardian before that, and a Feministe blogger, one of the most popular feminist blogs, before that. She has written articles and essays for The New York Times, Time, and CNN, as well as two books: The H-Spot: The Feminist Pursuit of Happiness (2017) and OK Boomer: How My Generation Was Left Behind (2020).
Filipovic has been a vocal critic of the website A Voice for Men. Michelle Goldberg, a Washington Post reporter, said she had been "singled out by [men's rights organizations] for her outrage. She was also listed in Hate Crimes in Cyberspace as a perpetrator of hate crimes for her feminism. She has been googlebombed by her detractors, according to Kerryn Goldsworthy.
After Filipovic blogged about a situation in which a handwritten note was left in her luggage, a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screener was fired. "I would much like a look at why "security" has been used to justify so many intrusions into our civil rights," she later wrote.
"The beauty pageants' laws are unfortunately not... obsolete," Filipovic has written about beauty pageants, adding that "the rules that these competitions promote are unfortunately not... outdated... we pay lip service to women's rights, but we should pay more attention to how beautiful women look in a bathing suit."
"Why should married women change their names?" Filipovic's reaction to name change for women who marry was published in The Guardian in 2013. In Critical Encounters in Secondary England: Teaching Literacy Theory to Adolescents by Deborah Appleman (2014), "let men change theirs" was cited as recommended reading on gender norms. Filipovic married Ty Lohrer McCormick in 2018 and kept her last name until marriage.
Filipovic has sluggishly reacted to Jeff Sessions' order to refuse asylum to women fleeing domestic violence. Women who suffer domestic violence in places where the government refuses to shield them are being prosecuted, according to her. "Sessions, who have deep sympathy against immigrants and his misogynistic worldview that domestic violence is a private family issue, have disregarded this pledge of safe harbor and turned it into a cudgel of misogyny."
She has also written about how abortion in Honduras has pushed women who are victims of sexual assault to flee the region.
