Lynn was a member of the Global Wrestling Federation (GWF), headquartered in Dallas, Texas, in June 1991. Lynn won the GWF Light Heavyweight Championship while in GWF. Lynn was also involved in a two-year feud with The Lightning Kid, which gave both men considerable exposure in North America. He made a brief stop with Smoky Mountain Wrestling in Knoxville in February 1992. Lynn will appear in the film Crossing the Bridge as an unidentified high school senior and a stuntman; to get the job, he did an angle with the Lightning Kid, where Kid cut Lynn's hair and sold it in small bags worth $80. In December 1993, he returned to Japan for a tour with Michinoku Pro Wrestling. He went to Mexico in July 1994 under the masked name of Sultan Gargola for Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre. Lynn returned to Michinoku Pro in July 1995 under the disguised name Golgotha Cross, a Tiger Mask villain. Gran Naniwa will lose his mask less than a month after. Lynn returned to the WWF in a singles loss to Rad Radford in April 1995 and teamed up with Lenny Lane in a loss to The Heavenly Bodies the next night.
Lynn began wrestling under his real name and under the masked alter-ego Mr. J.L. He held the title for one month while defending himself against Steve Corino, who lost the match to in a rematch. Lynn and Waltman met at Sacrifice on August 14, which Lynn won. Waltman began celebrating with Lynn before threatening his ex partner after the match. Lynn had re-injured his shoulder in the following week, according to Impact! (This was believed to be an opportunity designed to fuel the feud between Lynn and Waltman rather than merely perpetuating the existing injury).
