Meshuggah () is a Swedish extreme metal band from Ume that formed in 1987. * Meshuggah's line-up includes founding members Jens Kidman and lead guitarist Fredrik Thordendal, drummer Tomas Haake who joined in 1990, drummer Mrten Hagström, who joined in 1993, and bassist Dick Lövgren since 2004. Meshuggah's debut with the 1995 edition Destroy Erase Improve was among the first international bestsellers to feature a mixture of fast-tempo death metal, thrash metal, progressive metal, and jazz fusion elements. Meshuggah has progressed from seven-string guitars to down-tuned eight-string guitars since its 2004 debut on EP I. Meshuggah has developed a reputation for their unique musical style, intricate, polymetered song structures, and polyrhythms. Meshuggah was rated as one of Rolling Stone's top ten most influential hard rock and heavy metal bands and as the most influential band in metal by Alternative Press. Meshuggah is a significant act in extreme underground music, has a following, and is an influence on modern metal bands. Meshuggah's band was an inspiration for the djent subgenre of progressive metal in the late 2000s, and in 2018, the band was nominated for a Grammy Award for their song "Clockworks" under the "Best Metal Performance" category. The band has appeared at many international festivals, including Ozzfest and Download, and "Ophidian Trek," in which they produced live versions of their more popular songs, including "Bleed" and "New Millennium Cyanide Christ" from obZen and Chaosphere respectively, as well as "Obzen World Tour." The band was nominated for a Swedish Grammis Award in 2006 and 2009. * On the Billboard 200, nothing and the albums that followed are charted. The Violent Sleep of Reason, Meshuggah's latest studio album, debuted on October 7, 2016, peaking at number 17 in the United States.
