Jennifer Saunders Career

Career

As members of the informal comedy group The Comic Strip, which was part of the early 1980s alternative comedy scene, French and Saunders would eventually come to public attention as members of The Comic Strip. They responded to an advertisement in The Stage newspaper looking for female comedians to perform at The Comic Strip, which had, up until that point, only had male comedians. They were immediately told, "You're booked" right away as they walked into the audition.

When can you start?"

They became regular members of The Comic Strip, which included Adrian Edmondson, Rik Mayall, Peter Richardson, and Robbie Coltrane.

The group appeared at the Boulevard Theatre, above Soho's Raymond Revuebar, and developed a cult following, with visiting audience members including Dustin Hoffman, Jack Nicholson, and Robin Williams, who had not attended the performance. By the time French and Saunders became members of The Comic Strip, French and Saunders were already teaching drama, whilst Saunders was on the dole and spending a lot of her time in bed.

In the first episode of The Comic Strip Presents: Five Go Mad In Dorset, which was broadcast on Channel 4's first night on air, the comedy group appeared on Channel 4's first night on air. Saunders plays a "Bad News" and "More Bad News" in the episodes "Bad News" and "More Bad News," as a fictional heavy metal band Bad News.

Saunders appeared in and co-wrote Girls on Top with French, Tracey Ullman, and Ruby Wax, a film that portrayed four eccentric women in London. Saunders also appeared in Ben Elton's Happy Families, in which she appeared with several members of the same family, including the four Fuddle sisters in the six-episode BBC situation comedy. Saunders appeared in The Supergrass, a little-known parody of slick 1980s police dramas directed by Peter Richardson, which was also featured in a Comic Strip film. In Strike, a Comic Strip parody of the 1984 miners' strike, Meryl Steedill played Arthur Scargill's wife. On The Young Ones, she appeared twice as a guest.

French and Saunders, a popular sketch comedy series on the BBC that aired until 2007, was created by she and French in 1987. The show was an established comedy program by the 1980s and became a staple of BBC viewing. Saunders, as well as Dawn French and others, appeared in Amnesty International's The Unknown Policeman's Biggest Ball live benefit in 1989.

Both Saunders and French followed separate careers as well as retaining their comedy sketch show. Saunders' biggest solo success has been absolutely spectacular. The comedy was based largely on a fourteen-minute French & Saunders sketch titled "Modern Mother and Daughter." Saunders and French were due to perform together in the comedy, but French civilians were sent a long-awaited phone call confirming that an adoption company had a new baby for her to adopt, just as the studio had been booked.

Saunders went on to act in the comedy. Edina Monsoon, a journalist and actress who played Patsy Stone, and she wrote and starred in the series as the irresponsible fashion PR agent Edina Monsoon, attracted worldwide attention and admiration. During the course of twenty-four years (1992 to 2016, the show spanned two complete series, two telemovies, three special episodes, and a one-year film. The series is also known as Ab Fab and was broadcast in the United States on Comedy Central and BBC America, becoming cult viewing.

Saunders appeared on "Satan, Darling," and Friends as Andrea Waltham, the step-mother of Emily, Ross Geller's fiancée, in the episodes "The One After Ross' Wedding" and "The One Without Ross' Wedding". Jennifer Whitfield's Absolutely Fabulous co-star June Whitfield appeared in The One With Ross' Wedding Part Two as the Waltham's housekeeper, despite the fact that they did not appear in any scenes. In 1999, she appeared in Let Them Eat Cake alongside French singer Paula.

Saunders wrote and appeared in a comedy drama about a Women's Institute named Jam & Jerusalem, also known as Clatterford in the United States. On BBC One, the first series appeared in 2006, the second in 2008, and the third in 2009. David Mitchell, Sally Phillips, and Sue Johnston appeared on the program, as well as Dawn French and Joanna Lumley.

Tanya Byron, a psychologist and sociologist, was the co-host of BBC Two's The Life and Times of Vivienne Vyle, a neurotic daytime talk show host. The program was limited to a single series. Saunders portrayed the eponymous character whose program includes crude headlines such as "Wife a slapper?" "The lie detector shows all."

The last series of French & Saunders aired in 2007 as well. In September 2007, A Bucket o' French & Saunders presented a collection of old and new sketches, which was broadcast on BBC One. It was her third show she had written in a year. In 2008 and 2009, French & Saunders completed their final live tour, and French & Saunders: Still Alive.

Saunders appeared on "Star in a Reasonably Priced Vehicle" segment of BBC Two's Top Gear, becoming her fifth-fastest visitor in the car that was not used at the time. She has a passion for Alfa Romeos and has owned four of them so far.

Saunders wrote and appeared in "Uptown Downstairs Abbey," the Comic Relief parody of the critically acclaimed historical television dramas Downton Abbey and Upstairs Downstairs Downstairs. She appeared on various television shows, including Lumley, Kim Cattrall, Victoria Wood, Harry Enfield, Patrick Barlow, Dale Winton, Duncan Barlow, Patrick Barlow, Timothy Gambon, Michael Gambon, and Harry Hill.

Saunders appeared in Dead Boss, a BBC Three comedy set in the fictional Broadmarsh jail where she plays Margaret, the cruel and work-shy governor. Sharon Horgan, the show's creator, begged' Saunders to appear, having a fan of Saunders' previous comedies.

She also wrote the script for the Spice Girls-based jukebox musical Viva Forever!

In the BBC version of Blandings by P. G. Wodehouse, Saunders starred as Lady Constance Keeble. Saunders appeared on the Simpsons' "Looking for Mr. Goodbart" as an elderly woman accompanied by Bart in 2017.

Saunders has appeared in many films including In the Bleak Midwinter (1995), Muppet Treasure Island (1996), Fanny & Elvis (1999), and of course in the Spice Girls' film Spice World (1997) and Absolument fabuleux (2001), a French film based on Absolutely Fabulous.

She appeared in the animated film "Shrek 2" and "Holding Out for a Hero" and "The Fairy Godmother Song" and "Holding Out for a Hero." Her appearance took just four days to record. In just over a week, the sequel tied for the first time in the United States, and it went on to gross $353 million in only three weeks.

In 2005, her role was nominated for the People's Choice Award for the best movie villain. In the animated film Coraline, she played Miss Spink, in which her comedy partner Dawn French portrayed a character named Miss Forcible. She appeared in Queen Elizabeth II in the animated film Minions in 2015, and in 2016, she played Miss Nana Noodleman in the animated film Sing, reprising the role in Sing 2.

Marie Van Schuyler appeared in 'Death on the Nile' in 2022 as Marie Van Schuyler, alongside Dawn French, Gal Gadot, & Kenneth Branagh, the film's producer.

In 2018, Saunders appeared at the Valiant Theatre in the performance of 'Lady Windermere's Fan' as The Duchess of Berwick.

Madam Arcati, the eccentric clairvoyant, appeared on stage in the production of No.l Coward's 'Blithe Spirit' in June 2019. The show first appeared at Theatre Royal Bath and then moved to the Duke of York's Theatre in London in March 2020 after a brief tour of England. Due to the pandemic, two weeks into its run.

In autumn 2021, she appeared in the West End at The Harold Pinter Theatre for eight weeks.

Saunders portrayed Mother Superior in Sister Act the Musical for six weeks at the Eventim Apollo Hammersmith, alongside Beverley Knight as Deloris Van Cartier in the summer of 2022.
