Iko Uwais (born Uwais Qorny, 1983) is an Indonesian actor, stuntman, battle choreographer, and martial artist.

He is best known for his role in the action films Merantau (2009), The Raid II (2014), Headshot (2016), Mile 22 (2018), The Night Comes for Us (2018), Stuber (2019), and Wu Assassins (2019–present).

Early life

Uwais was born in Jakarta, Indonesia, and is the son of Maisyaroh and Mustapha Kamaluddin. H. Achmad Bunawar, his grandfather, was a silat master who established a silat academy. He is named after Owais al-Qarani, a 7th-century Sufi mystic, who was named after him.

Personal life

Audy Item, the Uwais married singer, was born at the Hotel Gran Mahakam in Jakarta on June 25. Athena Syahla Putri Uwais and Aneska Layla Putri Uwais are the couple's two children.

Film career

In 2007, Uwais' training hall discovered director Gareth Evans, who was filming a film about silat a form of martial arts. Evans wanted to cast him in his first martial art film, Merantau, due to Uwais' natural charisma and good camera presence. Uwais resigned from his daytime job as an operational driver at Esia, an Indonesian telecom company, after completing a five-year contract with Gareth Evans and his production company.

In his first acting role in Merantau, Uwais played a young Minang (West-Sumatran), which led him to learn the Minang style of silat harimau (tiger style) from Master Edwel Datuk Rajo Alam. Merantau was first released in Indonesia on August 6, 2009. With overwhelmingly positive feedback, the film was on display in the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival in South Korea and Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. Merantau received the Best Film award at ActionFest 2010.

The Raid (also known as The Raid: Redemption in the United States), Uwais' second collaboration with Gareth Evans, began in mid-March 2011 and was released in mid-2012. Critics and audiences have praised the film as one of the finest martial art films in years.

The Raid 2 and Uwais collaborated on a new film together. Uwais appeared in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) for a brief period of time, as well as Yayan Ruhian, a co-star of The Raid 2.

He appeared in the martial arts film Headshot, which received mostly positive feedback.

He produced Triple Threat, the international martial arts film, alongside Tony Jaa, Michael Jai White, Tiger Chen, and Scott Adkins in early 2019. In 2018, Uwais appeared in Mile 22 and The Night Comes for Us. It was revealed on the Netflix show Wu Assassins that Uwais was cast in the lead role of Kai Jin in the same year. On August 8, 2019, the series premiered. Uwais reprised his role in the sequel film Fistful of Vengeance. It was announced on February 17th, 2022, to mixed reactions.

Uwais appeared in the action comedy film Stuber in 2019, alongside Kumail Nanjiani and Dave Bautista. In the same year, it was announced that Uwais would appear in a film called China Town Express, portraying a man who must fight through the gangland of New York to save his family after his son was missing during a gang's massacre spree. Uwais is also a member of The Bellhop, one of Balboa Productions' first five films, co-founded by Sylvester Stallone in 2018.

In Snake Eyes, a spin-off from the G.I., Uwais was the Hard Master, a game of a spin-off from the G.I. Joe is a film franchise that has piqued my interest. On July 20, 2021, the film was released. He'll be the next actor in the Chinatown Express, an action thriller.

Uwais appeared in October 2021 and was part of the cast of The Expendables 4 in October 20, 2022.
